AMY ALKON does "applied behavioral science," translating scientific research into highly practical advice in books and a nationally syndicated, science-based newspaper column.
Alkon writes The Science Advice Goddess, an award-winning, science-based and darkly funny syndicated column that runs in newspapers across the United States and Canada via Creators Syndicate.
Alkon is also the author of "science-help" books. Her latest is "Unf*ckology: A Field Guide to Living with Guts and Confidence," a revolutionary "science-help" book that knocks the self-help genre on its unscientific ass.
In "Unf*ckology," Alkon lays out the process of how even the most socially awkward people can finally stop fear from being the boss of them and put an end to their lifelong social suckage. She also debunks widely-accepted but scientifically unsupported notions about self-esteem, shame, willpower, and more -- with her trademark biting, dark humor.
Her series of anthropology-based (and funny) books on why we're rude and how we can all behave less counterproductively include "Good Manners for Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck" (St. Martin's Press, 2014) and I See Rude People (McGraw-Hill, 2010).
Alkon's newspaper column has won numerous first place awards in the Southern California Journalism Awards, and Amy has regularly been one of four finalists for Journalist of the Year.
Alkon has been on Good Morning America, The Today Show, NPR, CNN, and MTV, among others; podcasts by Joe Rogan and Adam Carolla, among others; and does a weekly science podcast.
Alkon has written for Psychology Today, Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Times Magazine, the New York Daily News, among others, and has given a TED talk, "The surprising self-interest in being kind to strangers." She is the President of the Applied Evolutionary Psychology Society.
