Fetus First
Myra Rafkind of Planned Parenthood asks a good question:
What does a zygote/embryo have that many viable human beings do not have?ÝÝAnswer: The endorsement of the far-right.
Rafkind lays out the far-rightís idiocy, presenting a rational approach these staunch defenders of masses of cells are sure to ignore. Of course, these are the people most likely to be far, far away (probably ìreformingî welfare) once the mass of cells becomes the fully-functioning child of a working-poor single mom who canít afford childcare, or much else.
I don't see that raising your own kids without benefit of the interference of the state is such a bad idea. The "child care crisis" exists in the minds of legislators, not working parents. Even poor people don't really want social workers raising their kids. Planned Parenthood seems to be pandering to the lunatic fringe of the pro-choice movement, rather than adhering to the mandate of "safe, legal and rare". Not every pro-choice supporter hates babies, but there's an element of this in some of the more radical types.

What will they do if we ever have the ability to tell if an embryo will turn out gay? That should be entertaining.

A variant on the great Barney Frank line that, for the conservative right, life begins at conception and ends at birth.
