All The News That's Fit To Wear

And other stuff from the papers and my head, too, coming soon.

Meaty buns, Mantua

We just got to Paris this afternoon, and I was too bone-tired tired to put up a blog item. Well, a coherent and meaningful blog item. More words on Monday. In the meantime, enjoy the pictures.

Here's one of Gregg's chess partner, Boris Spasky.

Here are two Leonards -- Elmore and his son Peter, who just got a two book deal for his suspense novels.

Gregg read Peter's first book and said it was "very good, very suspenseful." Elmore likes it, too, which means a lot, since, as Peter said, if Elmore didn't, Peter would hear about it.

And here's a kiss from the most interesting dinner companion in the world, who I was lucky enough to sit next to at the Einaudi dinner.

Spassky... Hitchens... What, no drinks with Ms Curie?

I hate you, I hate you, I hate you.

Okay, now that I've gotten that out of my system, what did the two of you talk about?

Lucky Hitch, to have such a charming dining companion. :)

(Okay, now that I've sucked up, spill! We want details on what was said to whom!)

Meaty buns?

My eyes stop higher up - does she realize how ridiculous it looks to have her bra hanging out like that?

Forgive me for cheating, but I've been out all day visiting with Emily and Pierre, and I'm exhausted, so I'll steal from Dawkins, who gets Hitchens perfectly in this paragraph from Dawkins' review of Hitchens' book:

http://tls.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,25349-2649121,00.html

Grayling’s engaging caricature misses Hitchens’s ability to temper his pugnacity with old-fashioned courtesy. And “spray” suggests a scattershot fusillade, which underestimates the deadly accuracy of his marksmanship. If you are a religious apologist invited to debate with Christopher Hitchens, decline. His witty repartee, his ready-access store of historical quotations, his bookish eloquence, his effortless flow of well-formed words, beautifully spoken in that formidable Richard Burton voice (the whole performance not dulled by other equally formidable Richard Burton habits), would threaten your arguments even if you had good ones to deploy.

And fun as hell. Not that I think there is such a place!

As the old saying goes, Burton (or Hitchens) could read the phone book and make it fascinating. I was so happy when "they" released Becket on DVD a few months ago. Listening to Richard Burton argue with Peter O'Toole was a joy.
