Imagine If The Constitution Were Written Around People's Hurt Feelz
Women spent decades railing against male-only clubs like golf courses -- only to wake up in 2016 and decide segregated spaces were just the thing...if it's men who are being kept out.
At Heat Street, Jillian Kay Melchior writes:
Students at one Canadian university are demanding that men be banned from the on-campus gym for an hour every day."The gym is a male-dominated space where many women and non-binary folks do not feel comfortable," Sydney Schneider, programming coordinator of the Carleton University Students' Association Womyn's Centre, tells Heat Street.
Furthermore, Muslim women and others adhering to a religious dress code may also be more comfortable working out with no men present, Schneider said.
...Schneider denies that claim, telling Heat Street that "segregation comes down from positions of power and are forced upon people." In contrast, "this initiative allows women and non-binary folks the ability to work out in a more comfortable environment."
Would that fly if somebody said they were more comfortable without (insert any race but white[s]) around?
If you're not comfortable, here's what you do: Buy weights and work out at home.
You don't get to transform the workout environment into a discriminatory one because you've made yourself emotionally ill -- as so many SJW adherents have, telling themselves they can't tolerate the...heh...horror...of some man smiling at them at the drinking fountain or some clueless woman asking them, "Where are you from?"
I call that "friendly interest." These days, it's a speech crime.
"Non-binary."

Yeah, sorry. I'm not going to be rallying in favor of men in womens' bathrooms and locker rooms and sports teams as is the current trend. I don't care how they identify.
Call me a rabid right wing conservative or TERF or all you like.
The irony is I have no problem with co-ed changing spaces ... for myself. But other women are more modest or prudish and that's ok.
NicoleK at December 5, 2016 2:08 AM
As for the gym or pool, yeah, you might get sexually harassed. I think the answer would be for the women who want one to fundraise and build one themselves. The problem is if "non binary" men are allowed in, that is not going to solve the problem for orthodox jews, or fundamentalist christians or muslims.
NicoleK at December 5, 2016 2:18 AM
Thanks, Cridster. I forgot to hit on that when I posted. Of course, I would have had to look it up, because who knows what all of this bullshit means?
http://nonbinary.org/wiki/Nonbinary_gender
"Nonbinary gender is an umbrella term covering any gender identity that doesn't fit within the gender binary."
Oh, motherfucking, please.
Let's call this "trendysexual," and guess what: you can consider yourself whatever the fuck you want, and do whatever you personally need to do to make yourself comfortable. You don't get to close down the gym because you've decided you're traumatized by being around hairy manpeople who don't "identify" sexually as lilies or coffee cups or whatever.
Amy Alkon at December 5, 2016 5:36 AM
Do "Trans" sweat or glisten?
Do they "smell" different after a hard workout?
Will the existing towels be okay or have they been "infected w/cooties".
Just asking.
Bob in Texas at December 5, 2016 6:15 AM
Nicole, you have to admit the irony is delicious... they want "women only" spaces, but in the current context, the word "woman" has no meaning. So it's all the same anyway! And note something else: in this context, they want to consider transsexuals to be women. However, in most contexts, the current feminist leadership does not consider transsexuals to be women. So do the trans get some sort of provisional gym membership? Do they only get to join the women-only hours on alternate Fridays? Do they get to learn the secret handshake?
Cousin Dave at December 5, 2016 6:37 AM
Bob, don't ask questions that you don't really want to have answered.
This is about making "us" care. And by "us" I'm thinking that they mean "mommy and daddy".
Right now, I don't give a fuck about your gender identity, or whom you want to have (or not have) sex with.
But...if you make me care, you won't like it when I care. If you'd be so kind as to just leave this long haired country boy alone, we'll get along famously.

If you wanna know what a constitution written around people's hurt feelings would look like, check out the California Constitution. It has been described as "the perfect example of what a constitution ought not to be."

I find that the result of your investigation presents another path of inquiry.

So, if women don't want me ogling them in the gym, why do they wear yoga pants and a sports bra? Most men wear baggy clothes because it gives freedom of movement (I'd say 90% do). You want us to look/not look? Pretty hard to do.
cc at December 5, 2016 8:58 AM
Let's imagine a hipster of contemporary rhetorical sensibility, i.e., let's imagine a guy with his head up his ass.
Crid at December 5, 2016 9:02 AM
Also, I have spent lots of time in gyms over the years (college, YMCA, private gyms) and while I have seen some staring (hard not to) I have never seen even a guy approach a strange woman never mind harassment. I think some people just like to imagine danger.
cc at December 5, 2016 9:10 AM

Oh! Ah, then.
Crid at December 5, 2016 10:11 AM
@Crid:
Umbrellasexuals, then?

The women wear their yoga pants, shorts and other revealing clothes to catch the eye of men they deem sexually worthy. The rest of us can go jump, apparently.
mpetrie98 at December 5, 2016 11:47 AM
Cosh likes peppered muffins.
People who write things like "Nonbinary gender is an umbrella term covering any gender identity that doesn't fit within the gender binary" demonstrate nothing so much as isolation. They don't read for pleasure; the don't have encounters with people unlike themselves, certainly not erotic or sexually-meaningful ones. In each day of this ludicrous century it's ever-more important to ask "Yeah, but what the fuck did you ever do for anyone? With your own resources?"
"Hell, what did you ever do for yourself?"

Just catching on, or is this an old observation? there is no apparently about it, mon ami.
I noticed that when going to Florida beaches ~25 years ago. If you got caught scoping out the bikini clad hotties and you didn't pass muster, you got that thousand yard stink eye stare.

If segregation can't promote inclusion, I don't know what will.

IRADA knows him some Bocephus!
"So, if women don't want me ogling them in the gym, why do they wear yoga pants and a sports bra?"
1) They actually control some movement that muscles don't
2) It is visually appealing to the wearer to see a sleek shape. It adds confidence.
Their mileage DOES vary.
Radwaste at December 5, 2016 4:54 PM
"may also be more comfortable working out with no men present"
Then buy a membership to a woman-only gym for Pete's sake!
Don't make such demands of places that public tax dollars help pay for.

Yes. That's how it works.
Is there any reason you'd think otherwise?
Is there any reason it should work differently?
There are and will be no developments in feminism —or within the improvement of human social relationships generally— which will require attractive women to give you the time of day, let alone take special notice of your feelings about them. Nor will you, Abdul, be permitted to attenuate the appeal which their beauty nourishes in your heart until such time as they are concerned with your feelings.
If you don't want to get your heart broken by babes in gymnasia, then go work out someplace else. When you've got your head on straight, maybe you can sneak back in sometimes to discretely work the elliptical.
Crid at December 6, 2016 1:03 AM
Cousin Dave, most of the leadership of Feminist organizations are all about the trans. Even Planned PArenthood has stopped referring to us as female and now refers to us as "menstruaters" so as not to exclude transmen.
The general population of feminists is split, with the more Liberal "third wave" Feminists seeing transwomen as women, and some Radical Feminists (yes believing women are female and men are male is now considered radical) and Gender Critical feminists falling on the other side of the fence.
There's a similar split in the LBG community. A lot of lesbians are annoyed because they are told they are transphobic bigots if they don't want to sleep with transwomen who still have penises... which sounds an awful lot like "you just haven't met the right guy". There is this "cotton ceiling" concept where transwomen are upset that lesbians will befriend them but not let them past their cotton panties.
There's a whole "drop the T" campaign.
So if lesbian/bisexual and feminist positions seem inconsistent, that's why. Because we don't all agree with each other.
NicoleK at December 6, 2016 1:43 AM
Mpetrie, does your argument extend to other sports areas such as pools? Women pretty much have to wear small, body-hugging clothes to the pool. Even the most modest grannie suit is very revealing. Unless you buy a burkini.
Why do men go topless at pools? Clearly they want to be ogled by all the women there, old young fat or thin.
NicoleK at December 6, 2016 1:46 AM
"Why do men go topless at pools? Clearly they want to be ogled by all the women there, old young fat or thin."
To be fair NicoleK, yes. It would be unexpected but it is quite desirable. Men who feel embarrassed about their bodies typically wear shirts.

"So if lesbian/bisexual and feminist positions seem inconsistent, that's why. Because we don't all agree with each other."
Which is rich, coming from two movements that are both generally intolerant of differences of opinion.
