Hello, Amy! I know you adore Miss Manners, and while I haven't read every single column she ever wrote, this column of hers is my personal favorite.
Miss Manners will be the first one to tell you that calling someone rude is rude, even if they are being rude.
I love how she responded to this: she insisted that she would confine her comments to the manners aspect of the situation...only after pointing out that the letter writers' co-workers found her morally repulsive, she concurs with their assessment, and that the letter writer cheated someone and bragged about it.
And it is also good to know that there is a way of expressing moral outrage that is, if not polite, at least not rude.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

We put every hospital patient on PPIs routinely. Ive never understood why, and always explain to each patient what theyre getting, what it does, and that they can refuse it-with every med. Ive got a husband, daughter, and brother on longterm H2 blocker therapy, because of awful chronic heartburn if they dont take it.H2 has its own problems, of course, but so does chronic heartburn. Its a balancing act.

Chaos in the Democratic National Committee. It occurs to me that chaos in the Democratic Party might actually benefit them in the long run; it holds out the possibility of breaking the iron grip that Marxist orthodoxy has on the party. On the other hand, looking at the names of some of the dissenters, it looks like mostly the same old ruling-class insiders. I can't figure out if it's a civil war over ideas, or just power.

No, Sixclaws, it isn't the cost of the paint or the union labor, it was all the "kickback" money that the painting contractor had to pay to the State, city, county, township, and borough governments.

Something is up with the sun. The current solar cycle 24 has already been unusual because its maximum activity period (2012-2014) was abnormally low compared to the previous three cycles. Now, it has already reached the typical minimum -- but it's three years early. Will it keep declining from here? The prospect of a deep minimum is rather alarming because of the potential loss of energy reaching the Earth and the effects on Earth's climate (e.g., another Little Ice Age a la the 1850s). The other possibility is a "short cycle", which has not been observed previously and it outside of the bounds of current theory, so if it happens, it will be unknown territory for solar physics.
Caveat: we only have really good data on solar output going back to 1980, which covers 3-1/2 solar cycles. That's not very much. So we don't know if, historically, deep minimums or short cycles or both are typical.

Darth, regarding what the author said, I don't see how WARNING people (yes, maybe it could be done more politely) about what's bad for the environment is somehow intolerant. Namely, cars and overpopulation.
Bees (not mentioned in the article) pollinate about 2/3 of all crops, from what I understand. Bee populations are falling due to pesticides, loss of habitat, pollution, etc. People are starting to tell each other (even on cereal boxes, mind you) how you can help reverse the threat to bees. The threats I listed are connected to overpopulation, cars, etc. How is that not important?
I'm sure plenty of honest, hard-working people suffered terribly when asbestos was banned, but it clearly had to be done for everyone's health, not "just" the environment's. Not quite the same thing, of course, but it's always less of a burden to make a sacrifice on your own before the government has no choice but to force you to do it. So people try to give each other a heads-up beforehand so the listeners can make the sacrifice and beat the government to the punch. You COULD say one example of that was China's one-child law - but it's hard to imagine the people beating the government to the punch on that one.
As the saying goes: "It's not what you say, it's how you say it."

Somehow, I find it hard to believe the museum authorities couldn't have seen this coming. (Assuming it wasn't a stunt, as some suspect.)
It reminds me of those Ming vases that got destroyed at the British Museum in Jan. (?) 2006. (Incredibly, they were put back together.) But why did it have to happen in the first place? Here's what I mean. From the Guardian:
...(The man) said disaster struck after he realised he had gone up the wrong staircase and swung around to come down. He trod on his untied shoelace and fell forward. "I was trying to grab hold of something but the walls were smooth marble and I couldn't stop myself," he told the Mail on Sunday.
An instant later, Mr Flynn's 6ft, 13st frame was hurtling towards the first of the vases, all of which were displayed on a windowsill...
I mean, if they were on a windowsill, he clearly didn't hit them by rolling on the floor after falling. So they would have to be PRETTY close to the staircase to begin with, right? How stupid could the officials have been? Anyone can fall by accident.

"Bee populations are falling due to pesticides, loss of habitat, pollution, etc."
I'm afraid that isn't true Lenona. Working bee populations have an issue due mainly to overwork leading to disease and death. Wild bee populations haven't seen any colony collapse issues. So in addition there isn't any connection to cars or overpopulation. The tragedy of fake news.

How did a 36-story building built in 1971 not have sprinklers?
Crid at July 14, 2017 10:55 PM
Ben, why didn't you provide a source?
I haven't heard ANYONE else claim that the bee alarmists (if you want to call them that) are wrong. (They just try to argue that we'll find some substitute for bees - fat chance.) Nor have I ever heard of bees "overworking" themselves in large numbers. Bees can even count, mind you. They're not exactly dumb.
Source for THAT:
https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg14519672-900-busy-bees-have-a-gift-for-numbers/
lenona at July 15, 2017 8:28 AM
Hawaii law doesn't require sprinklers for buildings built before 1975. And retrofitting them into that building would have cost $1.5 million, so the residents demurred.
Conan the Grammarian at July 15, 2017 3:10 PM
I'll admit I am too lazy to look up a source for you Lenona so you can believe or not as you will. But yes it is overwork that is causing colony collapse disorder. And being intelligent doesn't really make much of a difference. You have to look at how bees are worked. A hive is hired and dropped of in a field with only one crop for acres and acres. As far as the bees can travel there is only one type of food. Then they are hauled off to another monoculture field and once again have only one food. Perhaps of the same type and perhaps of a different variety. This unhealthy diet weakens the colony's immune system which leaves them vulnerable to parasites and disease.
At it's heart the issue is malnutrition. Hives given a wider variety of foods don't suffer from CCD.
Ben at July 15, 2017 6:12 PM
> residents demurred
Next time you're feeling blue, think about what's happening to the resident's property values in this hour, and feel better about yourself.
And seriously,, what's so special about people living in buildings built after 1975?
I remember 1975.

Ben, I did a search on "bees are not dying" (without quotation marks). The first dozen results had only ONE article from a "scientific" source (others were sources like Forbes, ha ha), and the second page had mostly articles on why bees ARE dying off.
Not exactly a convincing search.
