Short--But Perfect
Unlicensed journalist sides with rent-seeking special interests who conspire with elites to rig the system in a way that disproportionately hurts the marginalized. https://t.co/3Z0WFEHyTb

Love the sub-head on this Josh Israel article in "Think" "Progress" (can't resist the scare quotes around these words):
Americans for Prosperity says the way to lift people out of poverty is to let them use dangerous chemicals and sharp blades without training.
Meanwhile, you don't need to be trained by some pricey licensing entity to safely use "dangerous chemicals" and "sharp blades."
A business won't let you hack up or burn the customers for a very good reason: It's terrible for business and tends to lead to lawsuits and bankrupcy.
Scott is on it:
@scottlincicome
People are using scissors - SCISSORS!! - without government approval?!?!
Meanwhile, some of the cases Institute for Justice (sneered at in the piece) takes are those forcing black women opening hair-braiding salons to pay ka-thousands of dollars to attend beauty schools that only teach them how to do white-person hairstyles they'll never, ever have the occasion for.
Way to go, "Think Progress!" On the side of protectionist laws meant to guard the profits of established business and keep minority and immigrant women from earning a living in classic ways women have -- through the beauty industry.
Here's some government-instilled genius:

I wish Amy was rich. I dig stubbornly attitudinal redheads with money.
(Probably… Never met any.)

Drez asks a good question.

In addition to the sub-head, Think Progress gave away its bias when it described Americans for Prosperity as "a right-wing tax-exempt dark money group bankrolled by petrochemical billionaires Charles and David Koch."
Do they describe left-wing tax-exempt dark money groups bankrolled by finance-manipulating billionaire George Soros in the same way? I doubt it.
This is why politics in this country is degenerating into violence. Whether cosmetologists need to be licensed and to what extent is a legitimate debate we can have without resorting to name-calling and character assassination. There are some good arguments available on both sides.

You didn't use scare quotes-- because you weren't trying to scare anyone-- you used perfectly appropriate sarcastiquotes.

The worst part of it is that first phrase, "unlicensed journalist". If Conor and his lefty friends had their way, podcasts and blogs such as this one -- which are the closest thing to objective journalism that still exist today -- would not be permitted to exist; the public would be left with either Pravda or no news at all.
This is where the American people need to draw a line in the sand: if licensing of journalists happens, it's revolution time.
jdgalt at August 18, 2019 9:03 AM
Jdgalt, you're misreading the tweet. Conor isn't the lefty--Josh Israel (the author of the linked article in ThinkProgress) is. Conor refers to him as an "unlicensed journalist" to highlight the irony of his (Israels's) support for licensing cosmetologists.

> perfectly appropriate sarcastiquotes.
I like that word.
(sorry for the fun links on the worky blog post)

Think Progress is a front for John Podesta's Center for American Progress, which is an oppo research and lobbying organization that masquerades as a policy research org. Neither are at all credible as as reporting sources. I'm sure that this piece was paid for by an industry group or other vested interest. TP doesn't publish anything unless they are paid to.

It makes sense when you grasp that lefties think only elites can be trusted to make decisions. The prols are dumb and must be protected from their food choices and all the dangerous things in the world like hair braiding. If their friends are protected by this, well, then good.

"...Whether cosmetologists need to be licensed and to what extent is a legitimate debate we can have without resorting to name-calling and character assassination."
Seriously, plus: Just looking at it in isolation, one would not think of this as being a D/R partisan issue. But apparently Think Progress has decided to make it one. More evidence that the Left regards libertarians as an enemy -- and that a lot of what is called "liberalism" these days is actually quite illiberal.

The trouble is, many of these left-leaning journalists would love for licenses to be required for journalism...
until they learned that Trump appoints the licensing board.
