California Electorate Is The Million Moron March
(Forgive me for fudging the actual number a little -- uh, coming in about 38 million and change short.)
Moron voters in this highly "progressive" state of California voted in a law that requires that bacon and other pork products come from happy pigs that get jogging tracks.
Okay, not quite, but basically, wealthy voters, voters who have packing peanuts filling their brain cavity, and voters who just don't fucking read (or understand) before voting ended up passing a law (see Yahoo piece below) that will likely lead to both bacon shortages and bacon prices skyrocketing here.
Now, I like to be kind to animals when I can. But like many people, right now, my priority is eating on a tight budget. If you are wealthy, be my guest to only buy pork that comes from pigs that had spacious surroundings and delightful lives before somebody slit their hoggy throats or however it's done.
But imposing this on the rest of us is just rotten. Worse yet, unless you read libertarian publications like I do, you likely don't know this is coming. I no longer have a car and I've been taking the LANow Shuttle home from the grocery store when I have heavy groceries. I just told my fave driver (who gets her bacon 2 for $7 when it's on sale at Food 4 Less -- sadly a store not near me) and she couldn't believe it.
I have a small freezer (in a slim refrigerator in some weirdo size it takes to get it in the back of a 100-year-old Craftsman shack). But I told her I'm stockpiling bacon -- as much as I can -- and pick up a bunch of packages every time I hit the grocery store. I suggested she do the same and spread the word to her friends and relatives.
Progressives + unintended consequences! (And to be fair, it's possible a bunch of idiot Republicans voted for this, too.)
Vance Cariaga writes at Yahoo of the coming bacony doom here in California:
You might soon need to bring home a lot more bacon in order to literally bring home the bacon, as a new animal welfare law in California set to go into effect early next year will likely push pork prices much higher than they already are.The law, which California voters overwhelmingly approved three years ago, will require more space for breeding pigs, egg-laying chickens and veal calves. Veal and egg producers sound confident they can meet the new standards, NPR reported over the summer. But only 4% of the nation's hog operations now comply with the new rules.
Beginning on Jan. 1, pork products sold within California must meet standards that mother pigs are given at least 24 square feet of space each to help them move around. They must also be kept out of gestation crates, which are 7-by-2-foot stalls that severely restrict movement, CNN Business reported on Sunday.
Because so few pork producers currently meet that standard, they have sounded the alarm that the new law will hike costs throughout the supply chain. They also say consumers in California and elsewhere will be left with fewer and much more expensive pork options -- including bacon, the smoky, salty breakfast staple that secured a place of near-worship among certain gourmands.
This in turn has created a sense of panic and doom -- a "bacon apocalypse," as some have called it.
PS There's a bullshit CNN stat in the story at the link that I did not reprint. No, CNN statsturds, you don't get to divide the predicted ballooning cost of bacon by every Californian and say the yearly cost will be only $8 per person.
Also, the wealthy people who voted this in should feel free, after January 1, to buy outrageously pricey bacon from happy pigs and dispense it to the rest of us -- if you can even get bacon by then.
Note that only 4% of pig producers in the U.S. are okay vis-a-vis the requirements of the California law. There are already issues from COVID with the bacon supply. And P.S. Eggs, too, are going to go up in price -- under this same law -- as will veal, but those producers think they can meet the requirements (unlike the bacon farmers).
Yay, wealthy dimwit voters! I hope you fall into a sewer of liquid tofu.

In years past I'd have agreed with you that it was idiocy and unintended consequences. Libs tend to not look too deeply or think of consequences at all. However, after some thing that have been happening lately, I have to go with nope these are the intended consequences. Sky high meat prices, forcing people to be vegans that's the intent, record gas prices that's the intent. People not working but living off government, that's the intent. the green new deal wanted cows gone, gas gone, the easy way to do that is triple the price, and blame it on Republicans Opec or a pandemic.

About two months ago, producers saw this coming and dumped beef and pork inventory. Prices in SC dropped nearly 50%.
Thanks, California!

You will be forced to care.

You will have nothing, and like it.

it's possible a bunch of idiot Republicans voted for this, too.
Are there enough Republicans in the CA state legislature to qualify as a "bunch"?
It will be interesting to see what this does to the price of turkey bacon, and pork products sold in places just over the border from California.
Myself, I won't be affected. I quit buying bacon when it went over $2 for a 12-oz. package.

Oops, sorry. Just read it more carefully and figured out it wasn't the legislature who passed this, but the voters directly.
So, I'll substitute another snide remark: the only Republicans left in California are the idiot ones. The smart ones left the state years ago.

Doesn't matter. California is governed by the mob now. Plebescites allow the legislators to keep their hands clean, so nothing the voted for (literally nothing) can be used against them in the next election.
Mob rule is one reason California's state constitution is longer than the owner's manual of a Toyota Camry - and half as useful.
