I admit some of these anecdotes sound fishy, but if even half of them are true, it wouldn't be much of a stretch to assume they're all true. I just wish there were follow-ups.
Does anyone know which verse in the Bible is likely the source used by the father in #5? He reminds me of John Muir's father, that way. (Of course, John Muir was born in Scotland in 1838, before he came to the U.S. in 1849 and founded the Sierra Club in 1892. Still...)

SPOILER:
Well, I may have found it - 1 Timothy 1:4.
King James Version:
"Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do."
Contemporary English Version
"You needed to warn them to stop wasting their time on senseless stories and endless lists of ancestors. Such things only cause arguments. They don't help anyone to do God's work that can only be done by faith. "
But...in 1 Timothy 4:13, it says:
"Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.”
(Of course, if you leave out the last four words, you can convince the young and naive that they should study EVERYTHING the teacher gives them, not just the Bible. Btw, there's a charming novel from 1944 about 1890s Kentucky, in which a preteen girl uses that verse to convince reluctant farmers to help raise funds for the first library in her town.)

Been binge watching Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe. Makes it kind of laughable to hear teachers complain about being overworked and underappreciated. Try working in a sewer 3 ft full.
I'm sure many are true but I've had many jobs over my life, just the stories I could tell would make these pale in comparison. And some like the one who was out for several weeks because her son died and was doing a parent teacher conference. Why? if you haven't interacted with the kids in most of a semester, should have been the substitute there either in addition or instead of her.

Joe, ever walked into a meeting where the boss starts off with 'This isn't a my way or the highway . . .'? Yep, you know how that is going to go.

Ahem. Why wouldn't we believe Meghan? I seem to remember a Presidential candidate whose major qualification seemed to be that she was married to one. I mean, other than being called a liar on national media in her first job with the Rose Law Firm.
Millions of people thought that was A-OK!

Joe J, I think the idea is that teaching children isn't SUPPOSED to be a job where you risk life and limb. Especially for low pay.
(Not to mention that 60 years ago or so, if you were a kid and got in trouble with the teacher, you'd be in even greater trouble when your parents found out, which made students a lot less likely to get violent with teachers. Obviously, teachers can't count on ANY back-up like that anymore.)
For all I know, soldiers get paid less than teachers. But if we're going to be uncaring enough to say that parents' and kids' attitudes shouldn't HAVE to change, maybe it's time to hire only those with military training if we expect them not to quit after a year - and maybe even give them authority to hit back.
lenona at November 4, 2021 11:23 AM
Lenona, if you want to give teachers the authority to hit back, first you have to hire principals who are able to tell self-defense from assault. Instead, we hire school administration majors, who are the stupidest kids that could get through college in an easy degree program.
That's also why schools are never effective in countering bullying - that, and the way school administrators seem not to be former elementary school bullies, but rather the losers who'd follow the bullies.
