The Unequal Rights Amendment
George Bush is leaning toward amending the Constitution to ban gay marriage, says an AP story by Jennifer Loven. He manages to hold this view while also holding the view that he is not intolerant. Now there's a flexible thinker! His words met with criticism from gay rights groups:
"It is never necessary to insert prejudice and discrimination into the U.S. Constitution - a document that has a proud history of being used to expand an individual's liberty and freedom, not to take them away," said Winnie Stachelberg, political director of the Human Rights Campaign. The president also said that he - like any politician - could lose his next run for office, next year's bid for a second term in the White House.
Just a little something to remember before you waste your vote on Ralph Nader.

I'm sure Bush is a flexible thinker in his own mind. If you're a man, you can marry any type of adult human female you want, as long as she's also willing to marry you.
I'd like to think that if he does do it, it would be the fatal blow to his soaring popularity, but the fact remains that the majority of Americans are still against gay marriage. So, it's more likely, in light of the civil unions in Vermont and the recent decision of the Massachussetts Supreme Court, that the majority of apparently squeamish Americans would actually be even more favorably disclosed toward Bush, especially since the Democrats' current fair-haired boy, Howard Dean, will be remembered as the Vermont governor who imposed gay civil unions in the first place.
I hate to say it, but I honestly believe it looks like Bush will be with us for a second term.

I wish Hillary would run.

Hillary is okay with civil unions, but she's against gay marriage too (at least that's her official position). Don't be surprised if she votes for the amendment.

How does it happen, that in a country of 200 some million people, that there's nobody I really feel okay (forget good) about voting for?

What I thought was funny was the day he gave that speech about leaning toward supporting the amendment he made one teensy little comment about not wanting to deny anyone civil rights. The yahoo headline on that story read: Bush May Have Opened Door to Civil Unions.
What was the point of that, trying to make him look more tolerant?
Are they fooling anyone, and if they are, who's to save us?

Amy, your comment made me think of a "Shoe" comic strip I saw when Michael Dukakis was running. The editor was typing an editorial which read, "What we need to ask ourselves this time is who the best man for the office of president really is... and why isn't he running?"
