There was this article years ago that talked about how academic types have to be very careful about writing and reading recommendations for graduates and faculty, e.g, "I can't recommend this individual highly enough... Words can't describe the leadership she brought to our project...." etc

You're so right about that Crid - for some reason it's harder to correctly process those negatives when trying to say a positive. Or something like that.
