Yoohoo, Image-Search Experts...
I'm looking for the creator of an image that appears on the blog TakeBackTheIsland.com, "started by a Manhattanite and Brooklynite who want to preserve their rights to fun, freedom, and the pursuit of child-free happiness." (Hear, hear.)
I need to find the creator of the photo so I can ask for permission from him or her, plus photo rights for the kid, so I can use the photo in my book.
This is a time-sensitive issue, since the book is due at the publisher in a few weeks, and image rights must be in order by then.
Here's the link. Any advice or help tracking it down would be most gratefully accepted. I'm good at tracking people, but I don't have much experience photo-tracking.
P.S. I've Google image-searched it, and found it in a few places with the search string -- kid airplane jpg -- but no point of origin yet.
Oh, and the shot is also on AltaVista as "superkid," which may be a better search word.

Well, I tried right-clicking on it and clicking on 'properties' when the menu came up, and that led to Bongonews.com, and that picture with the name Mike Pasternack under it, but no other info on the pic itself. I won't post the url because lately, every time I do, I get kicked into your spam folder! o_O

You might ask at worth1000.com, they generate a lot of Photoshop contests (along with FARK and many other sites.)
It definitely looks shopped to me.

Oh wow, I have a favorite new website!!!! I'm going to have to forward it to a few people who will appreciate it. Even though I have a bunch of ankle-biting germ buckets myself, TBTI needs to be required reading issued in tandem with the "What to Expect When You're Expecting" book. Might help strike a balance with some new parents, a sort of pre-natal sensitivity training. Then again, maybe not, but it's damn funny reading anyway. Thanks for the link, Amy, I needed that!

Go to pro.corbis.com and do a search for 42-17073672.jpg .

oh, sorry, wrong picture...

Amy - Ask snopes. I don't know how they do it but they seem to track images.
Norman at September 17, 2008 2:59 PM
Hey, if you want high quality stock to 'shop yourself, look here - but don't forget to search by keywords "cockpit" or "flight deck". Some of the most amazing photography available is on that site, and you might be distracted.

https://www.advicegoddess.com/archives/2008/09/yoohoo-imagesea.html#comment-1591201">comment from RadwasteThanks, but I actually want exactly that shot. It's been suggested to me that I have somebody recreate it, but I don't consider that ethical. To me, that's visual plagiarism. I wouldn't want somebody copying me. I don't have an art budget, but I have a terrific editor, and if there's an image that really works for my text, I would ask if he could toss a little money at the creator, if need be.

Hmm. OK. I know about ethics. It's not an unusual idea, though. It looks to be extremely poor quality. I suppose the original artist could come up with a sharper one, but not as sharp as this...
Anyway, enjoy the site - airliners.net is awesome!

I used http://www.TinEye.com to search for the actual image (as opposed to a title search.) They found 119 uses of it on sites all over the world. I went through the 12 pages of site listings and looked for someone who might be the originator of the image. Due to time constraints I could not check every site, only the most likely ones, but found no one who claimed to be a copyright holder. If you have time you may wish to look more thoroughy. Registration on this site is free.
I also checked http://www.photosearch.com, which searches many photo stock agencies all at once. Sorry, no results there either.

As a backup plan, why not at least consider the following. Challenge your readers to create and submit pictures to you.
Ones where the creator's intent is to precisely duplicate specific characteristics of that picture to such an extent, that it will stimulate the exact senses and therefore produce the same emotions and feelings as the other. More specifically, those that caused you to choose that exact picture.
It would be a very daunting (albeit fun) task for those up to the challenge. Not only that, you might find it refreshing to take breaks and review the submissions.
Grant it, being afflicted with ADD myself, taking "a break" may entail 12 hours of endless detours... Detours that produced nothing but terrifying anxiety after acknowledging you accomplished nothing.
If you locate the owner and obtain permission to use his or her picture, you end the challenge. You have nothing to lose except for your sanity, and that because you "A-D-DEED" yourself 12 hours closer to the deadline.

I don't agree about the visual plagarism, as I suggested to Amy that she just get someone to do her version. Most likely the original was created out of two photos swiped off the 'net--I've been known to do such a thing myself. And there's no way to copyright an idea. I like the 1,000 Words challenge to readers, but some of the Sadly No crowd might actually strap a kid to a plane.
Kate at September 17, 2008 9:32 PM
I think the kid is from the 1990 movie "Problem Child" photoshopped onto a airplane front. It is from one scene where the problem child "Junior" is riding on the hood of a moving car.
Somebody else will have to look at the movie as I do not have it on hand.

I've bookmarked that site too, Amy. Grandmother or not. It's great. Just want to know if they have an Albany chapter.

Once I think about it I think it is from the second movie "Problem Child 2" as in the first movie the bratty kid runs around in a bow tie most of the time. And in the second he runs around in a red shirt for few min. This I can find from looking at free vid on google or youtube.

I just downloaded the first two movies of "Problem Child" and did a very quick 10 sec by 10 sec scan and I did not see any scenes that are similar to the picture in either movie. I will (shudder) be trying the third movie in a couple of hours to once again. Sorry if I sent you down the wrong road.

Just finished going through the book and column with my assistant -- 8:19 pm Saturday night -- and saw your comment. Thank you, thank you, thank you...and the kid is somebody's grandkid, best of all. Maybe I can get the rights to this -- from the first guy for use of the kid and the second for use of the plane shot.
P.S. How the hell did you do that?

Sigh...I guess they only said they made the shots. Here's the message one of the guys sent me:

"I don't have an art budget" Then don't include it, that's pretty simple. No $$$ for champange, then don't buy it. "I would ask if he could toss a little money at the creator, if need be." Check out at the grocery store, ' I'll toss you a little money if need be '. Uh huh.
