Amy's Mall
My little statement in the "store window" at Amy's Mall kind of says it all:
Hi, I'm Amy and this is my store. Please buy stuff through my links so I won't starve to death as all the newspapers carrying me are going out of business.
Once you get there, check out the categories on the top left. Amy's Mall is now linked in my site links on the front page, from my columns, and from my blog. Or just type in advicegoddess.com/mall
I hope you'll support what I do by buying through these links. Even if what you want at Amazon isn't in my links, if you click through to Amazon through one of my links, I'll get a little kickback. I think it's six percent, and it adds up. Maybe to me making it through the year, if enough of you shop through these links.
And let's hope the economy is on its way up.
And no, *I* didn't pay $290 for those boots. Got them 75 percent off at the end of the year Nordstrom's sale.

Amy, I was looking for the Joe the Plumber book but I didn't see it.
OK, as penance for that remark I promise to click thru your site when buying stuff at Amazon. Which I do all the time. I hope you make some money. BTW, Amazon Prime is a sweet deal.

No appeals to pathos, Amy!
Be positive! Be positive!
Off to shop... You have guitar picks with Eiffels on 'em?
Crid [cridcridatgmail] at February 24, 2009 7:38 PM
Thanks, guys...trying to remain positive! Working on another book, a webTV show (advertiser-supported, we hope!), a seminar to help people figger out love, dating, sex, and relationships (one for men, first, then women).
Amy Alkon at February 24, 2009 7:53 PM
I never realized the kickback was as high as 6%. That's pretty awesome and I am sorry I didn't read this earlier tonight when I purchased a new HDTV. Okay, would you believe just a few books for $40?
jerry at February 24, 2009 9:31 PM
I have several of the books on your list, bought because you discussed them, but I tend to buy them from Amazon used, and very used at that....
jerry at February 24, 2009 9:33 PM
Keep your head up high, pretty lady! Earlier today I heard that the San Francisco Chronicle is going out of business. We're living through a time in history of incredible change. I do believe though that all bright people who are willing to work hard and be creative will come out on top.
You get top marks in all 3 of those categories!
Robert W. at February 24, 2009 10:44 PM
Thanks, everybody. And even for used books, I get a little kickback. It adds up. Just trying to make ends meet where I can. It's really crazy. The Tucson Citizen, for example, will go out of business on March 21, because they didn't find a buyer. They've been running me for years.
Amy Alkon at February 25, 2009 4:35 AM
Amy,
To be honest, I don't really shop @ Amazon. I can count on one hand the amount of items I've purchased there in the last five years.
However, since I sorta *know* you, I'll look around there when I do shop. I have your mall bookmarked. (Every little bit helps, right?)
I do have a question for you-
Does Amazon pay the 6% or do the vendors? How exactly does that work?
I'm crunching the numbers later today w/ my business partner to see if Amazon is something we want to do w/ our business. (We're mostly eBay and our website.)
I wouldn't mind helping you out.
Truth at February 25, 2009 5:41 AM
Can you add stuff to your store on request or do you get the same back if we just shop through your link?
Good luck and hang in there.

I just spent $300 on some stuff I've been putting off buying like a few tools (now I guess I'll have to start on that new shower) so todays starbucks latte is on me.

And as a frugal person, I don't drink latte, but I am going to have a breakfast sandwich (they're doing construction on the street outside my house, and I'm going off to Starbucks now to write). So, thank you!

Hang in there Amy. Business is rotten here as well- advertising effectively stopped Feb 01. I work with lots of newspapers as well, and I haven't heard word one from them yet this calendar year.
Eric at February 25, 2009 10:15 AM
How about a section of toys. Maybe Mr. Buzzy. ;-)
Jim P. at February 25, 2009 10:32 AM
Actually, I thought of that just this morning. I should do an erotic toys section, but maybe with a better name. And maybe "Amy's Commenters Recommend" for stuff other than books.
And so sorry to hear that, Eric. I hope it gets better for you and everyone. My neighbor thinks part of it is just having people feel things might be looking up, so they'll spend a little.
Amy Alkon at February 25, 2009 11:03 AM
How about

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." So true -- both at the microeconomic level and the macroeconomic level.
I applaud your energy and creativity, and expect you to succeed beyond your expectations.
As for me, I plan to rely on brute strength and ignorance -- the answer to every problem! (Get me a BIGGER hammer, dammit!) ;)

I just got a telemarketing call from a man who wanted to know if I would be interested in sponsoring him to give blood at the local hospital...

"And even for used books, I get a little kickback"
Do you in fact get 6% if I click onto Amazon.com from your mall page, then buy a used/out-of-print book through Amazon Marketplace? There are some rather expensive but very desirable classic out-of-print titles there over which I've been agonizing for some time. "Should I splurge, or shouldn't I?" Knowing that it would help you out would be enough to tip the scales for me.
And it seems that if you go to Amazon, then redirect to Amazon.ca, you're still within "Amy's Mall" space. That might be worth mentioning for your Canadian readers.

How do you know you're still in Amy's Mall? I'd like to buy a Rosetta Stone package from Amazon.ca, but I don't know how to make sure Amy gets her percentage?
moreta at February 26, 2009 10:02 AM
Thanks so much, guys...and as long as you come through one of my links (per what Toubrouk posted above), it'll come to me. Truly appreciate it.
Amy Alkon at February 26, 2009 1:36 PM
P.S. Rosetta Stone is great. Gregg bought it for me after I had to quit my weekly French class after the downturn in newspapers, and I actually started at the beginning lesson, and I finally, FINALLY know how to pronounce words right in French that I have been pronouncing wrong for DECADES!
Rosetta Stone link is within the wedding gifts link. Going to have better categories soon, but I wanted to get these up.
PS And I keep thanking Gregg over and over, but I'd like you all to know that not only does he look after and code every aspect of this website besides the actual blogging, he is the one who figured out that my mall should be this Amazon aStore, which is really fun and easy for me, and he built it, too, which took him a period of days. I'm a lucky girl!

I'm donating platelets tomorrow at UCLA. They usually drain me for two units of my famously vigorous and restorative thrombocytes, plus a unit or two of plasma on the side, depending.
What am I bid? Eric? Anyone? Magog? Anybody?
Crid at February 26, 2009 2:44 PM
I will keep you in mind - I usually group my Amazon purchases for when a friend or relative travels stateside.
I didn't know Stephen King had a book on writing!
- you might also want to add the books of Dr. David Burns to your list - they are popularized treatments of cognitive therapy, and books like "The Feeling Good Handbook" are wildly popular.
Try search Amazon for popular books in these areas, then list 'em. You may get more traffic and purchases.
Hang in there mamaleh.
Ben-David at February 27, 2009 1:16 AM
"What am I bid? Eric? Anyone? Magog? Anybody?"
I don't drink the stuff myself, but last I heard the going rate was a cup of orange juice and a cookie (hospital scale, I suppose).
"I didn't know Stephen King had a book on writing!"
In it he manages to mix his life story, substance abuse history, writing tips, and criticism of famous authors who didn't turn out enough books. 'What were they doing with their time?' comes in somewhere after 'I was so loaded I don't remember writing Cujo'.
Good book - recommended.

I was at a Red Sox game about 10 years ago. The first game back for Mo Vaughn after he left the Sox. It was a big deal in Boston. Good seats, close to the Sox dugout. About halfway through the game I look behind me and there's a guy sitting there who looked just like Steven King. Without thinking I lean back and say "Ya know, you look a lot like Stephen King." (I was witty even back then). He gives me a long look and then leans right into my face and says "A lot of people say that." I laughed and mumbled something and turned back around. I looked back again and realized it was Stephen King. I tell my buddy and he starts talking to him between innings. (I wanted to leave him alone) He and his friend were pounding Beers and he was dressed like a gas station attendant with a John Deere hat on. He'd had a limo drive them down from Maine and was taking it back after the game. He humored my friend until I convinced him to leave him alone.
A few weeks later he got run over by a van while walking along a road in Maine. Almost killed him.
