Guess Who Woke Me Up Last Night
Long day's journey into night on Tuesday, and I fell asleep on the couch while reading and woke up to the phone ringing at around 11:30 p.m. It was my old New York painter friend Max Ferguson, calling from Jerusalem, where he now lives with his Israeli wife and his two and a half children (one on the way, he explained). I thought you might like to see his paintings -- "of a vanishing New York," which are here.

It's not work I would particularly buy myself but he has real talent. It's nice to see art, in this world where more and more art is 'crap-stractionist,' to see someone demonstrate the formal craft of painting.
The "Time" piece at the splash page is really great.
Thanks for posting this one.

This is so cool. My mother has a work of his. It hangs proudly in the front room. I'll have to ask her which piece it is.

Oh, my goodness! I think we have achieved three degrees of separation, LOL! A friend of mine since high school also knows Max.

Your friend does amazing work, Ms. Alkon. It seemed like I could almost smell the air and feel the weather in the paintings. Thank you for the link!

I can NOT believe these are oils. They look like photographs-so beautiful. Thanks for sharing

Hilariously, I became friends with Max about 15 years ago when I dialed a wrong number and he sounded like a guy I know -- one who has a pretty unique voice. I'm a chatty sort of broad, and he sounded interesting, so I kept talking, and finally, told him, apropos of nothing, that he sounded like my friend (named the guy's name). Turned out they'd grown up together and had been best friends for years.
