Do You Live In A Conservative Town?
There's a small point I need to consider about my book, and I need to talk to a few bookstore owners in conservative towns. And I don't mean the ones who own the one hippie bookstore, but the mainstream bookstore or small bookstore that serves a good deal of the town.
If you do live in a conservative town, or you know of one, and you could post the name of your town, the name of your local bookstore, and maybe even the phone number, I'd be most appreciative. I'm going to call the manager or owner and ask them a question. I started out in advertising, right out of college, at David Ogilvy's ad agency, Ogilvy & Mather, and ever since, I've always "tested" stuff I do when I'm not sure about what will fly or sell.
P.S. If you'd rather not attach a location to your name, please just post as "anonymous" or something. What's most important is that I get names of bookstores, not who they come from.
Many thanks!

depends on what you mean by conservative there, kid. I think Denver is relatively conservative, but not as much as Colorado Springs, and certainly moreso than Boulder. Put it up against Lincoln, Nebraska? Much more centrist. But.
Tattered Cover serves various sections of Denver, some are Conservative [Highlands Ranch] and some are more Liberal, like LoDo [Trendy Downtown Denver] But could give you an overall feel. Not sure if the owner is conservative herself, but certainly is a staunch supporter of 1st. Amend.
This is a large but independant store, and is one of the forerunners of what borders is but was doing that 25 years ago.

Thanks so much. I actually need ones from sort of stodgy religious conservative towns. Colorado Springs is a great idea. Any others would be appreciated.

you could try these guys in Lincoln, NE. It's been eons since I was in school in Nebraska [Seward to be exact] but they were a pretty good store that isn't a University store.

best of luck...

Rockford IL is a blue collar, mostly Lutheran town (got lots of de Scandinavian influence here, yah?) 7 of 11 bookstores listed here are Christian Bookstores. Is that conservative enough (grin)?
We have a Border's and a B&N, then there's very few of the little guys that are not strictly Christian books, such as Wonderland Books (a children's bookstore): 815-394-1633

Amy, check out RJ Julia Book Sellers, in Madison, CT. I can't think of a more conservative place in this state!
Here's the website:
http://www.rjjulia.com/
Phone # is 203-245-3959
They do thinks like an Open Mike night for poetry, and they have a lot of local and national authors come in for book signings and readings but I'm pretty sure they're only in this one location.

Sorry, thinGs...
and I mean they're the only RJ Julia bookstore. That I know of. Aw hell, just try 'em.

Tattered Cover is one of America's great bookstores. Entirely different setting, but memories of those stacks fold neatly in the memories of Powell's in Portland. And there's a wonderful upscale restaurant on the top floor.

Big Bear, CA is quite conservative, at least to judge from the number of McCain and Yes On 8 signs on lawns last year. Not counting the explicitly Christian ones, there are two book stores here:
Big Bear Book and Bean, 878-4083
Edelweiss Books, 866-7734

They're in Doylestown Pennsylvania, and have established a successful, long standing, independently owned bookstore which stocks a very broad selection of titles. And they'd probably be a good candidate for a trial marketing effort. They're always running some sort of in-store promotion for authors.
Also Doylestown is very friendly to writers. It's the county seat of Bucks county, which has been home to a number of well known novelists, playwrights, screenwriters, etc.
I don't know that I'd typify Doylestown as 'conservative' in the cultural sense. The local community is classically bourgeois in that it's been influenced by affluent farmers/landowners, merchants, craftsmen and lots of ornery quakers, dutchmen, and other independently minded people. So you'd probably fit right in ;)

You should contact the owners of Bay Books (619) 435-0070 in Coronado, CA. It's an easy drive down I5 in your pink Rambler.

I don't know their politics—I'd call them "uptown Midwestern," if anything—but the best independent bookstore in St. Louis is Left Bank Books: 314-367-6731. They're great people to have a chat with and I'm sure they'd be interested in your project.
Then you can visit St. Louis, have a book-signing event, and enjoy the best pasta west of the Mississippi!

Forgot the area code on the Big Bear book stores' phone numbers. It's 909.

Sierra Vista, AZ is a somewhat conservative town, with lots of retirees and military personnel.
Hasting's Books there seems to carry a good selection of right-of-center books. I picked up (and just finished) the wonderful book _Good Calories, Bad Calories_ that you recently recommended. Thanks!

You want small town conservative, try this one. And Wilmington, OH was the US hub for DHL, but they are pulling out of town.

I wasn't sure if Janesville was conservative, but if Juliana thinks Rockford is, then Janesville, WI probably counts too.. and it's smaller than Rockford. We have a "Book World" (608) 756-4331 and a "Waldenbooks" (608) 756-3493 which is in our mall, but I'd say those two are the ones that serve the locals, if they don't want to drive down to Rockford or up to Madison for a bigger store (like Borders or B&N) with more selection.

Barnes and Noble, College Station TX. Extremely Conservative, one mile from the George Bush Presidential Library, across the street from Texas A and M University. This is one of their BIG stores.
