Kay And Earl Recommend...
The world's most adorable senior citizen lovebirds are voracious readers. They come to read almost every day at the cafe where I write. Kay is reading a novel she says is wonderful, the story of a guy, in his 90s as the book opens, who had to join the circus after his parents died. The book is Water for Elephants: A Novel, and best of all, it can be had in paperback for the bargain price of $7.95 (discounted from $13.95).
When Kay isn't reading, she's teaching kids to read. Earl is a retired pediatrician who volunteers at the Venice Free Clinic -- as he has for 30 years. Many of the cafe regulars love them and get up and hug them when they come in. Who says Los Angeles is a cold town? You just have to go the right places and be a little friendly and open.

'Water for Elephants' is a good book - I read it last year, at the recommendation of a friend, and enjoyed it very much.

I agree...I absolutely loved Water For Elephants. I cried through the end, though.

May I suggest "Patriots" by James Wesley, Rawles? (Yes, that's really how he spells it, with a comma).
It's a heart-warming story of Christians who bug out to their heavily-fortified ranch in Idaho and fight off Communist cannibals and invading UN troops following the apocalyptic collapse of US currency.
The best part is the story, which you're only burdened with every few pages. The rest is filled with instructions on how to arm and run your militia, how to stockpile and trade ammo, booze, and real silver dimes for bartering in the aftermath, and why the government can't require you to have a driver's license when you're driving.
Book of the Year, easy.

Read Water for Elephants last year. Thought it was just so-so.
