Make fun if you want, John, Rover's perch is pretty stylish for a city that's (mostly) younger than South Beach.
I can't remember where, it was some slutty source, but there was an article somewhere that pointed out that even a modest tower does a lot to improve the appearance of a structure. And it's true, it makes a lot of ordinary buildings look like they might be fun to own.
LA has quite a few of them left, and I've learned to keep an eye on them. They help us remember that this city, which we think of as very new, has actually had a pretty big piece of American history.

And BTW, who goes to Burbank by way of Highland...?
Somebody who has to be there at 7:30, coming from the beach. 405=nightmare!
Unfortunately, so was Highland -- apparently, thingamajig at the Hwd Bowl, so I called and they directed me onto the 101. (Gregg, my usual traffic and directions guru, complete with the intials GPS, was on a plane back from Detroit.)
Badlands, they say... A godless trough of villainy and corruption. Gimme that 405, especially from the Westside.

From the West side that time of day, I'd do Venice-Western-Los Feliz Blvd-the 5.

Western?!? Oh, just admit it: You want to stop by Bonnie Brae to score some smack.
You people are savages. Besides, westside is never two words to a commuter in a hurry.
Ah... Here's what's going on here: Amy's little electric car can't handle the Sepulveda elevation. It's 1200', and her little mini can only do three hunnert at a time! Har!

I got home by accidentally getting on the something-or-other, and then the 5, and then spotting downtown off in the distance and going that way. Burbank is actually one of the easiest places to get to in the Valley from the beach -- if the Hollywood Bowl isn't on for the night.
The 405 and 101 during rush hour? Kill me now! I always sought out routes that moved, even if they were a bit less direct. Hate sitting in stop and go traffic on freeways. And if I get to cruise through somewhat seedy parts of town to do it, all the better!

If Amy could go around a corner without getting seasick the run could be over Crescent Heights/Laurel Canyon (you can wave at Wonderland) to the Valley and Burbank. And if Amy really wanted to run her Rice-a-Roni Electro-Rocket hard, run up PCH to Topanga and back-door the Valley. There are a million ways from Sado Monica to Burbank, and all require turning.

Amy, you better keep that Burbank-in-the-Valley remark to yourself, as Burbank residents do not believe they live in the Valley.

Sado Monica, I like that. And yes, Jay speaks the truth: I get carsick from my own driving. Sigh. Topanga Canyon is particularly bad, but Laurel/Coldwater, etc., come in a close second.
Those drives are great. My wife talks about "going to her happy place" when I drive the canyons. But she doesn't tell me not to!
It's amazing how clogged coldwater can get. You know you're in LA when really rich people sit in traffic.

I drove the PCH from Santa Monica down to... someplace. In a convertible.
That's the one thing that LA has going for it - convertible weather year round.
But I thought the 84/91 interchange in Hartford and the 91/95 interchange in New Haven were bad until I tried to navigate the 5/405/101/7xx morass through East LA.
Are they trying to turn LA into Florida now?

This little fellow from my neighborhood is struggling.
