The High Cost Of Obesity
A court ruled that the employer of a 340-pound pizza chef has to pay for his weight loss surgery -- possibly to the tune of $25,000 -- which he needs before he can get back surgery for an injury he incurred at work when the freezer door hit him.
From an AP story by Charles Wilson:
His employers agreed to pay for the back surgery, but argued they were not obligated to pay for a weight-loss operation that could cost $20,000 to $25,000, because Childers already was obese before he was hurt. The board and the court, however, said the surgery -- and disability payments while Childers was unable to work -- were covered because his weight and the accident had combined to create a single injury. They said Boston's didn't present any evidence that his weight had been a medical problem before the accident.
Boston's needs new lawyers.

So, you can't discriminate and not hire an obese person for being obese, but if they hurt themselves for being obese - you have to pay for them being obese.
Well, that makes perfect sense!!!!

Nothing is ever anyone's personal responsibility.
It's always somebody else's fault.

My advice to the guy that owns this pizzaria.
Have your wife set up a shell corperation, sett all your assests to it cheap, like 1 cent on the dollar, declare bankrupcy for your business and shut it down
Reopen under your wifes new business licence under the same name

What exactly does the weight loss surgery do? Cut the fat off? The weight loss surgeries that involve clamping the stomach and/or rerouting intestines do not necessarily lead to permanent weight loss. Sure, there will be some weight loss due to the initial inability to overeat; however, it is easy for compulsive overeaters to defeat their surgeries and continue their largeness. It would be great if the pizzeria could fight this and win it. But who has time for that? I really am afraid that obesity will become a "class" for whom discrimination is forbidden. Weight loss is possible, it's called making changes in diet and activity levels FOREVER. To expect special treatment and protection from skinny people is just crazy talk.

Sadly, I have a friend who does not think being unable to get up off the floor unassisted is a problem. She's just 44. Even worse, I remember her great beauty from 20 years ago...
