A New Kind Of Spam
People are apparently getting their address books hijacked. Got this sort of spam from two people this morning, with the name of some person I've never heard of (and I bet they never have) in the header:
Subject: Sally Boultbeehttp://df-informatique.net/go.friend.php dave molesworth
Don't go to the link. When I did on the earlier e-mail, it went to some site selling something.

Did you notify the people it came from? This sort of thing is a good indicator that their computers may be infected.

There are a bunch of websites that ask you to put in your gmail/ yahoo/ hotmail info so it can absorb your contacts. Some people are foolish enough to do it.

I've seen spam allegedly originating from my own email address.

A new one I have seen is emails supposedly from iTunes (something like iTunes@iTunesstore blah, blah, blah), but the subject is something like VIAGRA**SECONAL***etc. Also, I love checking my email on my iPhone, because even the legitimate-looking ones that are scams come up as "This message has no content." Thanks, Apple!

Perhaps you should pop by the Apple store and have somebody check it out. Popping by ATT would, I'm guessing, be useless, unless you find mind-blowing frustration sexually gratifying.

I was being sincere in that thank you to Apple. It makes it much easier to identify and mark as spam the emails that purport to be from reputable sources. On my laptop, I just delete the suspicious-sounding ones, but my iPhone makes it easier by telling me they have no content so I don't have to open them (not that I would anyway). Great feature as far as I'm concerned. I wish I could find a way to do that for my Yahoo mail on their website. It's funny how some of those spam emails try to use your name, as if that makes them seem more legitimate. It's fine on the address that actually uses my name (Courtney, pick up your FREE gift card!), but hilarious on my other one (summarizeproust, your lottery winnings are here!).

Amy, I interviewed you a while back about "I See Rude People". We haven't aired that interview yet, but will tomorrow, most likely between 4:30-5:00ET, on CBC Radio One in Newfoundland and Labrador.
People can hear it on the air here, and on the internet everywhere by going to
cbc.ca/nl and clicking on listen live
