Air Space
As annoying and hellish as flying's been lately, I'd really rather take off in one of these -- well, except that it's actually a restaurant at LAX, called Encounter. (Pretty groovy, too -- right out of the Jetsons, inside and out.)

It used to be called the Theme building, and the "theme" of the restaurant was "overpriced."
Amy will buy a candy bar for anyone who can name the architect without research.
Crid [CridComment at gmail] at February 6, 2010 11:49 PM
I thought "the architect" of the Theme Building was pretty common knowledge. And the architecture of The Jetsons was based on that building.
Or maybe it wasn't such common knowledge. Back before The Jetsons were redone and had only the original series run, I used to be quite the Jetsons trivia buff.
For instance, in the original series, what two major characters never appeared in the same episode?
What was Astro's first name?
Full name of the building superintendent?
Mr. Spacely's wife's first name?
George's grandfather's first name?
Rosie's boyfriend's name?

Amy - I am sure that there are rude people on other planets who need a little sense beaten back into them (verbally, that is).
I'm a nerd to the nth degree and would love nothing more than to live out the life of Capt. Trillby Elliot in Finder's Keepers. Yup - I read sci-fi romance/adventure novels. I might even go to Boskone next weekend!!!
That restaurant looks pretty neat. I'd eat there on principal, even if the food sucks. :-)

Was that building featured in the movie "The Apple"? (Worst movie ever).
NicoleK at February 7, 2010 5:38 AM
I'm sure it is overpriced, but I don't remember. I've met friends there who were just in town for an hour or two at LAX. It's a way cool place to sit.
Before we all had to be checked to make sure we won't blow up the planes for Allah, friends and I were going to go to the airport and bring dinner and watch the planes take off. They were German and didn't know about the restaurant and neither did I. Gregg has some interior shots -- but I think they're just closeups of stuff.

One that ticks me off about flying is all the indoor clean air acts. I'm a smoker (yes, I know all the health effects, Thank You).
I can handle the no-smoking rules on an aircraft -- but then to not provide smoking areas inside of TSA security just pisses me off. I have a three hour flight, a 2 hour layover that I have to go through TSA if I want to smoke, then a second three flight.
Mix that with the cattle car seating -- and then you wonder why I don't fly or am very irritable?
Jim P. at February 7, 2010 5:20 PM
Mixed feelings about the dilemma you're facing, Jim. You knew, before you took up the habit, that smoking was dangerous. You also knew that everyone else has heard the same cautionary warnings about the habit. With this in mind, what else could you have logically expected? "Yep, that sure is a dangerous habit you got there, but feel free to indulge it right next to me, in this enclosed environment, so I can be subjected to the same carcinogens you're inhaling, because of your choices and through no fault of my own."
Not only did you choose to ignore the warnings, you expected everyone else to do the same. Sorry, no sympathy.

@Patrick: "...I used to be quite the Jetsons trivia buff."
Oh, tell us already, Patrick! All I really remember was George and Spacely going to a football game where all the players were robots. Together, they won a doorprize of a fabulous mink coat, but fought over which of their wives would get it. Eventually, they cut about a foot and a half of the bottom -- Mrs. Jetson wound up with a mink jacket, and Mrs. Spacely got a fine mink stole.
I wonder if you could broadcast that episode now without an outcry from animal rights folks?

Believe it or not, in the original series run, Rosie the Robot Maid and Astro never appeared in the same episode. It was one or the other, never both.
What was Astro's first name?
Tralfaz, although he hated this name.
Full name of the building superintendent?
Henry Orbit.
Mr. Spacely's wife's first name?
Stella.
George's grandfather's first name?
Montague Jetson.
Rosie's boyfriend's name?
Mac.
As for the mink episode, I imagine the animal rights activists would raise a huge fit over it.

Patrick, if you believe half that secondhand smoke crap, you must really love the global warning myth
ron at February 8, 2010 1:22 PM
Global warming (more precisely called climate change) is no myth. The last decade was the warmest in recorded history.
And secondhand smoke is dangerous. No ifs, ands or cigarette butts about it.

" the movie "The Apple"? (Worst movie ever)."
Somebody wrote a script worse than 'Battlefield Earth'? Seriously?
Gog_Magog_Carpet_Reclaimers at February 8, 2010 4:02 PM
The last decade was the warmest in recorded history.
What do you mean by "recorded history"?
Hey Skipper at February 8, 2010 11:42 PM
Points to Skipper, I love it when people are busted for those things. (Though I hate when it happens to me.)
Crid [CridComment at gmail] at February 9, 2010 12:50 AM
Skipper: What do you mean by "recorded history"?
I wasn't aware that this was a difficult concept. There is history. Then there is recorded history. As in history that actually occurred when there was someone around to write it all down.
In the case of climate change, that would refer to that period in history when the outside temperature could actually be measured and recorded. See? Easy.
Patrick at February 10, 2010 4:11 AM
Patrick -
There's one major MAJOR problem with "recorded history" as far as temperatures go.
Really accurate (as in to fractions of a degree) thermometers have only existed for a short time (less than 50 years).
Add to that the documented problems with siting for many of the ground stations, and you're not looking at "recorded history" at all, but "an historical re-enactment". With all the directorial liberty that implies.
