Anybody Had Their Health Insurance Cancelled For An Expired Credit Card?
Trying to help a friend. Just wondering. Guy's in California, if that matters (should anybody here know anything about this).
Had a nice long original blog post that got eaten by a kernel panic -- and I'm not even on the computer that's been having all the kernel panics. Will try to redo it tomorrow in the morning.

If he had a monthly deduction on the card to pay for the insurance, I could see that.
That happened with the newspaper for me...my card number got sold on the internet so I my card was cancelled. I forgot I had the newspaper on a monthly deduction. I guess they sent me a letter, but it had all this junk in it to donate to this group or that, that I just tossed it without realizing that it was about my subscription. I noticed after a bout 2 months that I was no longer recieving the paper...I figured if it took me that long then I didn't need to get it.

While you're in pain, would you mind if I took a moment to make fun of Apple? Yes you would? Never mind, then.

You mean canceled for not paying his bill?
Ya, I've heard of that happening.

He got me the iBook I'm writing on (Gregg doesn't buy me jewelry -- I told him never to bother, as I wear plastic earrings and think diamonds are a silly waste -- but he loves getting me technobling). Anyway, he bought it about six years ago in March, and I have hammered and hammered on it daily (when I'm not on it, my assistant is), blogged on it, taken it around the world, and it's in terrific working condition, and doesn't seem at all aging technology.
Also, both my iMac and this computer are beautifully designed, inside and out, and Gregg just got me an iPhone, too, and the same is true for that. Incredible little machine.
Go ahead, make fun of Apple. And get one, and join the fun. And it is fun and easy.

Wow. A kernel panic. I had a machine that experienced that. I think it was a G4 desktop. 10 years ago? Pre OS X.
I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble with that and a little surprised. My use of OS X has been absolutely bulletproof. I'd say foolproof but my 'puters have not had to put up with the limits of fools' efforts.
Also, do you need Skype to load at startup? I always disable that when I put Skype on a machine. It's easy enough to invoke with a click in the dock, eh?
I hope you get it all up 'n' running smoothly soonest!

I'm such a heavy user, it's to be expected that problems develop. I've also had this one for years, and wrote the book on both of these computers.

Yeah, my gym membership got cancelled when one of my credit cards expired. I just forgot about it! I ended up putting the membership on my debit card, so it's all good. But if you have your health insurance payments (monthly? I'm guessing) on a credit card, and the card gets cancelled, and you don't make payments any other way, yeah, I could see where the insurance would get cancelled. Still sucks, but that's what happens.

I got a letter from EZPass that I was going to toss, unopened, but for some odd reason I took a look. They want $37.50 because some car with a license plate that looked like mine went through a toll booth in Albany on New year's Eve without paying. The envelope was not from New York State, and didn't look like anything more than an advertisement.
Nice try, but it's not me. I don't expect they will waste any postage on an apology.

Having work lost is fun and easy? Apple customers never recompile the kernel anyway, do they?
Nyah-nyah; I mean that.

In general, because I know more about commercial insurance than personal/healthcare; laws surrounding cancellation of insurance typically provide a minimum of a 10 day grace period after cancellation for reinstatement of the policy without compromising the coverage.
During this time (between cancellation and 10 day grace period), a notice should have come via mail notifying the gentleman of the policy cancellation. Did he get it? When was it mailed to him? Did it fall within the legal notice requirements?
If he can prove that he was not properly notified of the cancellation, then he may start out by reaching out to the California Department of Insurance (although I believe he may be directed to a government agency specific to health care companies).
Prior to this, he should ask the health care company when the cancellation notice was sent (if it was sent) then check with the appropriate government agency about what the time frame is for proper notice. If they missed it - they should be required to reinstate the policy without a lapse or change in coverage.
Typically, you get forewarned before they are about to really, really cancel the policy. If payment or contact is made within the 10 day grace period - reinstatement will follow.

It sounds like Amy has a bunch of stuff loaded on her machine. That often times leads to problems.
My father complains about his machine being unstable, buys a new one and pretty soon it is unstable too. I looked at his machine and he has close to hundred different little things added. Many with basically the same functionality, just something a little extra or something is easier to do. With all those things, it seems like no wonder that there is incompatibility somewhere in there.
I don't have near the problems he does...I only have two items that launch at startup. We use our machines for the same things.

Feebie: "If he can prove that he was not properly notified of the cancellation..."
That's the kicker - how do you prove an absence of something? I run into this more and more often lately - "Can you prove the Comcast guy never showed up that day?" or "Can you prove your mail was delivered to the wrong address?"
No, I can tell you I waited around all day, and, yes, at some point I must've gone to the bathroom, but I'm pretty sure that two minute window was clear. No, I can't prove how I'm NOT GETTING MY MAIL because guess what? I'M NOT GETTING IT!
Yargh!

Feebie, thank you -- that's just super-helpful. I copied that into an e-mail and just sent it to him (I called him, too, but he's on the phone with his lawyer he hired to deal with this). Poor thing. Hate that this is happening to him.

Anthem Blue Cross regularly bills me AFTER the payment is already due. Then it takes them another 40 days to process the check, in the meantime I get scary cancellation threats.
Finally went to online bill pay, fewer notices.
I have NO idea what their back end processing is like. Probably hunchbacks grinding their own wheat in a medieval castle or minimum-wage temps (with access to my SSN/birthdate) moving at molasses speed.
