People Aren't Blowing Up Airplanes For Isis Or Gaia
Love this. The very people whose holy book commands them to convert or kill the rest of us (those of us who don't believe in Allah), have their "scholars" telling them the new airport scanners violate their religious beliefs. Amazingly, taking advantage of all the technological advances of western culture -- like airplane travel -- apparently does not. These people sure do pick and choose.
Niraj Warikoo writes for the Detroit Free Press:
In a move that could complicate airport screening, a group of Muslim-American scholars issued a religious ruling this week that called upon the faithful to not go through body scanners because the scholars said the machines violate Islamic rules on nudity.A growing number of body scanners -- 450 more of them this year -- are to be introduced in airports in Michigan and across the U.S., say Transportation Security Administration officials. Their increased use comes after the Dec. 25 bombing attempt on an airliner over Detroit, heightening fears of terrorism. The suspect in the failed bombing is a Nigerian Muslim.
The Fiqh Council of North America -- a national group based in Indiana -- said the scanners contravene Islamic law, which is grounded in the Quran. The council consists of an executive council and a council of 10 scholars, two of whom live in metro Detroit. It's an affiliate of the Islamic Society of North America.
"It is a violation of clear Islamic teachings that men or women be seen naked by other men and women," reads the fatwa. "Islam highly emphasizes haya (modesty) and considers it part of faith. The Quran has commanded the believers, both men and women, to cover their private parts."
All the better to blow you infidels up, my dear!

Haha! What next!?
Here in Saudi they often refuse to go through metal detectors because they believe they will give them cancer!

Memo to self:
When (one and/or more) muslims refuse to go through scanner for plane I am boarding, DO NOT GO ON PLANE.
Ken at February 15, 2010 2:44 AM
Go to places like Detroit, and you won't be getting on any planes.
This is yet another case of soft jihad -- a way to make our society kneel before Islam.
Amy Alkon at February 15, 2010 6:04 AM
The devout and penitent Muslims who refuse to go through the scanner will receive a VERY cautious screening, both verbal and physical, and be shown to be carrying nothing.
Meanwhile the people who ARE planning damage will go through without a peep, allowing the noisy Muslim to distract everyone.
I'm reminded of the Loyalty Oath from the McCarthy days. Devout Americans with nothing to hide protested against the frightening concept of the Oath, and the actual spies signed it without a flutter of conscience.

We don't really see the cost of the scanners, but that and the extent that we have a TSA should be seen for what it is: a tax Islam puts on all of us.
Where are those wonderful "moderate Muslims" I hear so much about? I can guarantee you, if people were murdering people in the name of rational thought, I'd be protesting loudly and constantly.

As far as I'm concerned, they can go through the scanner or stay off the plane. If they've got a problem with it, they need to start with their co-religionists who made it all necessary.
MarkD at February 15, 2010 7:24 AM
The full-body scanners that display a naked picture of the person being scanned go against my beliefs too.
Better for everybody to undergo a cautious and thorough screening than to rely on expensive and degrading gadgets that don't actually improve security.

That is an interesting conundrum, HOW do you kill random people in the name of rational thought?
lujlp at February 15, 2010 8:30 AM
Those Muslims sure have some chutzpah. They can go Fiqh themselves.

You don't, of course, but I was trying for a parallel.

Beagles. That's all I'm sayin'.
And Amy - why doesn't the "Remember personal info" thing work in any browser? I was fine with it in Mozilla, since that at least did an auto-fill thing. But since Mozilla and 64-bit Windows 7 don't get along (Mozilla hanges the fuck out of Windows) I'm on Opera, which doesn't seem to have an Autocomplete function.

I'm with MarkD. Don't like it? Don't fly.
Come to think of it, that might solve the problem right there.
Ann at February 15, 2010 9:35 AM
I wonder, if legislation were passed forbidding muslims from flying because the procedures required would violate their beliefs...would that particular institution protest?
Robert at February 15, 2010 6:02 PM
Oh my. This is getting out of hand. Who cares about the technicalities of a religion. If the scanners keep people safe from bombers and hi-jackers, I say scan away. They are just looking for loop holes now. How far is the government going to let them go?
Kerstin Monroe at February 15, 2010 9:36 PM
Yes, I'm with MarkD as well, because he had the same thoughts that I did, but beat me to it in the comments.
If you don't like it, take the friggin bus... or drive yourself to where you have to go.
And would about the rest of us civilized people who unfortunately have to put up with this ridiculous level of screen things you your Muslim brothers and sisters who have made these intrusive screenings a necessity?
F$&$%&rs.
Instead of whining about it, speak out against murderous fundamentalism rooted in your religion!

Hi
I live in saudi and for the 20 years I have been here, I have never heard people say that metal detectors give them cancer.
Actually, these metals are everywhere here ...in malls...in supermarkets..in bookstores...you name it.
I expected more of you amy than to go on baashing billion people as if they all come form one school of thought ...there are four schools of islam...each school is taught and recieved differently...the majority of muslims are NOT relgious as you may think....they pray...fast and give to the poor....that's it...the relgious according to arab and muslim are those that tell others what to do..and wear and talk differently...those are minority and yes some of them are wacko but others are not.
Poeple here are not exactly what you think. many of them are highly educated...family oriented...friendly...fun loving...and open minded...maybe wayyy more than some of your people on your web
There are som many things that need reform in this part of the world...but isn't this pretty much true everywhere else?
You talk about planes and how they are nort picky here....You build the plane...they give you the oil to fly it. No oil from them...no planes or cars or trucks or motorcyles for you! I say they are entitled!!
This is balanced...no color..no race ..no God invovled..ms. I see rude people!

There are secular Muslims just like there are secular Christians, but enough Muslims follow the death cult demands of their religion (convert or kill the infidel so as to globally install The New Caliphate) that Islam is a great danger to western culture and freedoms and to all of our lives. That's barbaric.
And yes, it's a pity we need that oil or Saudi Arabia would still be a country of warring goatherds, and Muslims would just be killing each other (all these warring tribes) instead of the rest of us.
I'm no fan of the evidence-free belief in god of any stripe, but when we go to the airport three hours early, we're on Muslim Time, I like to call it. They need to see if we want to blow up the plane for Allah -- because that's who people are blowing up planes for, not in the name of Judaism, Christianity, Gaia, Isis or rational thought.
Where are those lovely moderate Muslims we hear about? How come nobody's speaking out? Against death cultism and against the fatwas against people like the courageous Wafa Sultan?
It isn't rude to tell the truth. The ultimate rudeness is murdering other people for Allah and coming up a close second is being Muslim and not doing or saying anything to stop it.
Mary, speak up! Or are you afraid of being murdered for "insuliting" the barbaric religion known as Islam?
