I assume most folks know they still made the Bug until 2003. One can buy a 30 year old Bug here in top condition for maybe $3000 USD. And, no, they cannot be imported into the US.
Also those who still own one in the US can drive it into Mexico, assuming the frame isn't rusted, and they can essentially renew it, but Customs at the border is wise to this, so you have to pay Customs on the costs of renewal.
They stopped making the Bug, not because there was no market, but because it cost too much to make, with no automated assembly.
The Chevy is the new substitute. Probably a lot more reliable, think Geo Metro with a different body. A very tough little car.
They do have small Korean, I think, Atos; also a Ford; a VW mini; the Yaris and um, they are even trying to sell a Chinese car, which claims to have a Toyota engine.

Looks ugly. Like someone used non-glossy housepaint. Kind of reminds me of the Geek Squad cars, but they actually use car paint.

Note the little pointed studs down the center of the hood.
Does anyone know what year it is? Or is there even any way to tell?
One of my buddies in college had one of those. It was gold. The heater was so bad that if we drove any distance in the winter, we'd wind of with frozen feet by the time we reached our destination. At the start of Christmas break in 1984, we were coming off I-275 outside of Cincinnati at night when the gear shift completely disengaged. I remember my buddy fumbling around in the dark trying to reconnect the linkage. He did manage to get first and second gear to work, and we were able to chug slowly to a friend's house.
Now that I'm thinking about it, I remember as we were leaving the highway we were saying "Nothing can stop us now!" just like Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry right before they're flattened by the freight train.

With those "eyelids" over its headlamps, the poor thing looks kind of downcast, don't you think?

I had a blue one. Poor guy got trashed in a super-typhoon. :-( But I just wore motorcycle goggles and drove it without a windshield after that.
Great beach car.
Nothing on the hood but there was a stud in the driver's seat! ba-da-BUMP!
