Draw Mohammed Day, From A Girl Who Doesn't Draw
What to do, what to do...some mediocre sketch of Mohammed, not up to my conceptual standards?
That wasn't going to work.
I put my favorite subject to work instead, to show my opposition to religious thuggery and my support for free speech and other Western values:
Nick Gillespie, in reason, explains their Draw Mohammed contest:
It's worth meditating on the whys and wherefores of the contest, which was inspired by a jihadist death threat against the creators of South Park and was originally suggested by Seattle artist Molly Norris....There comes a point in any society's existence where it must ultimately, to paraphrase Martin Luther (who himself was more than happy to see opponents put to death), dig in its heels and say here we stand, we will do no other. We don't need to be perfectly consistent philosophically or historically or theologically to assert what is special and unique not just about the United States, with its bizarre and wonderful articulation of the First Amendment, but the greater classical liberal project comprising not just the "West" (whatever that is) but human beings in whatever town, country, or planet they inhabit. And at the heart of the liberal project is ultimately a recognition that individuals, for no other reason than that they exist, have rights to continue to exist. Embedded in all that is the right to expression. No one has a right to an audience or even to a sympathetic hearing, much less an engaged audience. But no one should be beaten or killed or imprisoned simply for speaking their mind or praying to one god as opposed to the other or none at all or getting on with the small business of living their life in peaceful fashion. If we cannot or will not defend that principle with a full throat, then we deserve to choke on whatever jihadists of all stripes can force down our throats.
...Our Draw Mohammed contest is not a frivolous exercise of hip, ironic, hoolarious sacrilege toward a minority religion in the United States (though even that deserves all the protection that the most serioso political commentary commands). It's a defense of what is at the core of a society that is painfully incompetent at delivering on its promise of freedom, tolerance, and equal rights. It's a rebuttal to the notion that we should go limp in the clinches precisely because bullies and bastards can punch or blow us up.
Oh, and remember when Iran, in response to the Jyllands-Posten cartoon Islamic cartoon controversy, ran a Holocaust Cartoon Contest. In response, Jews all over the world...went about their day -- yes, most amazingly, instead of blowing up Muslims' places of business or trying to behead the cartoonists.
Luckily, Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard was saved from the ax-wielding Muslim guy who broke into his home by huddling in a panic room.
UPDATE: Twitter is having none of that freedom of speech stuff, it seems. I tried to do a second tweet of my 'round midnight tweet about this post and I kept getting error messages:
"Something is technically wrong. Please try again in a moment."
Got that repeatedly. And another message, saying I didn't have permission to post.
But it seems my account isn't suspended. It seems they're blocking "Mohammed" and probably "draw." I used both in my tweet:
Draw Mohammed Day 5/20? Hmm, I don't draw. I am, however, one of those wacky broads who dresses up her dog: http://bit.ly/bVfY1Y

No. They won't respond that way. They will just threaten to blow everyone up as usual. Offended Christians just hold press conferences where they ask the nation pray for the souls of Matt, Trey, and all the fans. On another note, those whiney Christians gave us all a bad name. I knew about the dog thing in Islam -- it all just worked out: I can't draw, I am a dog-dresser, the little bitch loves being the center of attention (even if she has to wear a beard made out of a hair scrunchie rubber-banded around her head), and then there's the little extra fuck you that came with the doggie-hammed photo. Mohammed is the most popular name among Muslims worldwide. There are hundreds of millions of them out there. So if drawing a little sketch of Mohammed is an act of blasphemy punishable by death, isn't naming someone "Mohammed" much worse? Shouldn't all those false Mohammeds be beheaded? Anyone brave enough to make a Muslim version of "Life of Brian" could have a lot of fun with this.

It's one thing to draw a politically valid cartoon, and another thing as to what South Park is doing. I think it's damned irresponsible to inflame the Muslim community just because we can. Shakespeare had a great line in Henry the Fifth:

The title of Salman Rushdie's novel refers to an incident in which Mohammed received a revelation urging Muslims to worship 3 pagan Meccan deities. When his shocked followers asked how he could possibly acknowledge any god but Allah, Muhammad declared that he had been deceived by Satan, and the Satanic Verses were banished from the Koran. A serious novelist wrote a serious novel about an actual event in Islamic history. Does a free man in a free country not have an inalienable right to do so? This was not a pointless, childish provocation, but that didn't stop Muslim fanatics from murdering dozens of people over it.
A Nigerian woman won the 2001 Miss World contest. By pageant tradition, the contest is held in the country of the previous year's winner. The majority of Nigerians were very glad to have Miss World in their country, along with the tourism $$ and publicity that went with it. The Nigerian President himself gave a personal welcome & invitation to the organizers. But a minority of Muslim fanatics found this benign celebration of unveiled female beauty so blasphemous that they went in an orgy of mass murder, slaughtering hundreds of people, hacking children to bits with machetes, tossing babies into burning buildings...
Three years ago, an English schoolteacher in Sudan asked her students what name she should give to the class teddy bear. They all said "Mohammed!" When the imams found out about this, there were huge riots in the streets of Khartoum and demands for her execution. It took an all-out diplomatic effort by several Western countries to get Gillian Gibbons out of jail & out of Sudan alive & in one piece.
I could go on. The point is that Muslims riot & commit mass murder in response to things that no sane person would consider offensive, never mind outrageously provocative. Tip-toeing gently around the delicate sensibilities of rabid murderers & their apologists simply will not do.
Martin at May 20, 2010 1:51 PM
There has never been any prohibition on drawing Jesus or Moses, so it's not a valid comparison.
I'm certainly no Muslim apologist- I'd like to see any Mosques that house weapons be leveled and any Imam's that espouse violence be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law. But to me this is an exercise in showing we disrespect them and we dare them to react, and it places our citizens and our troops into an even more hostile situation.
If we receive a reaction to this Beslan or 911 style, millions more will weep than feel liberated.

There's disrespect to Christians in Piss Christ and so many other examples. In our society, we allow free speech. If we have to pussyfoot around a group of thugs because they are violent primitives, we allow them to extort our freedoms from us, and that just can't be allowed.
I don't put this image up lightly. I'm a little scared, and a few people I sent it to last night told me not to put it up. But, I think we need to stand up for the freedoms allowed us by our Constitution, and other Western values. What's next, you can't criticize Muslims or Islam or you'll end up dead? Where does it end?

For centuries there was no prohibition on drawing Mohammed - very old Persian miniatures and other illuminated manuscripts depict him.
This is a recent prohibition coming out of the increasingly fanatical movement sweeping Islam.

It strikes me that we are placing the Muslim community in a no-win situation. They react, they are barbarians. They don't react, one of us will come up with "Piss Muhammad" and wait for their reaction. This isn't Rushdie or Van Gogh.
Kinda like Phelp's Westboro Baptists, at some point there will be a rightous reaction, and some bystander or cop who is trying to protect their first amendment rights will be caught in the middle. Maybe this time we'll be lucky and it'll just be riots in Karachi where a few shopkeepers get killed.

When, as you say, Eric, "they react," they kill innocent people over cartoons and fly airliners into skyscrapers because a book of fairy tales told them to do so. I don't have the answers here either, but the flaw in the let's-not-provoke-them argument is that they don't need any provocation. Jihad is an action, not a reaction. The only reason we're enjoying ourselves here reading Amy's blog on our computers is that Charles Martel stopped the spread of Islam into Western Europe in its tracks at the Battle of Tours in 732. Otherwise, the Renaissance & the Enlightenment would have never happened.
If there's an observant Muslim out there somewhere who has written a piece stating that:
A) Everybody-Draw-Mohammed Day is reckless, childish, and an embarrassment to the West,

B) Muslims who threaten murder over cartoons, any cartoons, are evil & insane & a disgrace to all Muslims, and Westerners are not subject to any Muslim laws or prohibitions, not now, not ever

More likely the shutdown was to try and put a lid on it to prevent rioting, rather than to take sides as such. But that's still useful to know. And it gets the point across to the only people who can fix the problem - you can cut yourself off from the world, or you can live in it and not demand others submit to your rules. Whoever thought that is counterproductive needs to consider what the 'moderate Muslims' will think about losing internet access. Will businesses complain? Will those with relatives overseas be upset? Until the pain of fanaticism affects them directly they won't act to control the extremist elements of their culture. Which till now they've signally failed to do.

Dear Amy and fellow readers,
We must understand that Islam's prime directive is the militant conquest of the entire world, mandated by Allah & Muhammed in the Koran's infamous 'Verse of the Sword' & in this hadith: Bukhari (8:387) – Allah’s Apostle Muhammed said, “I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah'"
Islamists have been dutifully following this mandate for 1,400 years, since the time Muhammed left Mecca for Medina. What we are facing is nothing less than an ISLAMIC WORLD WAR that rages on every continent except Antarctica, against everyone and everything “non-Islamic”.
Let’s look at the FACTS. Islam against:
- the Catholics in the Philippines (routine slaughter & beheadings)
- the Christians in Indonesia (routine slaughter & beheadings)
- Australian tourists in Bali (blown up…twice)
- the Buddhists in Thailand (routine slaughter & beheadings)
- the Hindus & Sikhs in India (hundreds of years battling the Islamic Jihad)
- the Jews in Mumbai (slaughtered)
- the Zoroastrians & Baha’i in Iran (virtually exterminated)
- Islamic converts to Christianity in Afghanistan (death fatwa)
- ancient Buddhist statues in Bamiyan, Afghanistan (blown up)
- the Chaldean Christians in Iraq (routine persecution, slaughter & church burnings)
- the Jews in Israel (routine attacks against civilians, threat of 2nd genocide)
- the Jews in Yemen (nearly exterminated)
- S. Korean & German tourists in Yemen (blown up)
- the Coptic Christians in Egypt (routine persecution, slaughter & church attacks)
- the Christians & animists in Sudan (genocide)
- the Christians in Kenya (constant Jihadist threat from Obama’s homies)
- the Christians in Nigeria (routine Jihadist attacks)
- U.S. embassies in Tanzania & Kenya (blown up)
- the athiests in Europe (the prime target)
- the native French in Paris (torched car terrorism)
- Jews in Paris (read the grisly story of Ilan Halimi, a Jewish shop clerk who was kidnapped, tortured and killed in 2006)
- the native Swedes in Malmo (Islamic rape brigades)
- the native Dutch in Amsterdam (routinely terrorized)
- Dutch politicians (Geert Wilders & Ayyan Hirsi Ali – death fatwa)
- Dutch cinematographers (Theo vanGogh savagely murdered by an Islamist in broad daylight)
- Dutch cartoonists (Kurt Westergaard – death fatwa)
- Dutch newspaper editors (Flemming Rose, Jyllands-Posten’s culture editor – death fatwa)
- Train commuters in Spain (blown up)
- Tube commuters in London (blown up)
- Airports in Scotland (blown up)
- Jews in Argentina (blown up)
- Jews in Caracas (blown up)
- Twin Tower office workers in N.Y. (blown up – twice)
- Defense workers in the Pentagon (blown up – airliner jihad)
- Army/Navy military recruiters in Little Rock (gunned down by an Islamist)
- Soldiers in F.t Hood Texas (gunned down by an Islamist)
- Pedestrians at the U. of N. Carolina (run down with an SUV by Islamist)
- Journalists like Daniel Pearl (savagely decapitated by Islamists)
- Nick Berg, Kim Sung-il, Piotr Stanczyk, Jack Hensley, Eugene Armstrong, Paul Johnson (savagely decapitated by Islamists)
- Jewish centers in Seattle (slaughtered by Islamist Jihadist)
- Jewish centers in Toronto (slaughtered by Islamist Jihadist)
- Delta Airlines passengers on Christmas day(underwear bomber)
- Times Square patrons (SUV bomber)
And on, and on, and on……….
It is Islam against everyone, everything, everywhere that is not Islamic.
It is Dar al-Islam against Dar al-Harb. Islam against us, not us against them.
Let’s face the facts and call it what it is. It is not a ‘War on Terror’ against a few ragtag misunderstanders of Islam. It is nothing less than: THE ISLAMIC WORLD WAR.
THE ISLAMIC WORLD WAR – Muhammed’s evil legacy - it's real.

I heard on the radio about plans to build a mosque/muslim community center at ground zero that will begin construction 9/11/11. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1278922/Plans-mosque-Ground-Zero.html
The backers of the project say that it is away to push back against extremists and rebuild the area, but this just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Why there and why on that date? It feels like a slap on the face. Aren't there other ways they could show their support? They had to know people would be upset about it.

Amy, the thugs aren't reasonable. So, can you beat civility into them with a set of pictures?
Or will that give them an excuse to be even crazier and push the non-thugs in their direction.

Simplest solution, drop a plane load of dead pigs on the Kabba and put an end to this war that has been going on for nearly 1500 yrs

The reason Muslims descend into a frenzy whenever the image of Muhammed is brought up is because they know it will create critical discussion about their ‘holy’ prophet. That simply cannot be tolerated, because when the truth about Muhammed is exposed he is revealed to be a sadistic, violent barbarian.
Muslims have been brainwashed to believe he is some sort of righteous, moral religious leader, but he wasn’t. He was nothing more than a successful Charles Manson who made his living by intimidating, raping, killing, enslaving and looting.
The Koran 68:4 upholds Muhammed as “…an exalted [standard of] character.” Islamic tradition upholds Muhammed as ‘al-insan al-kamil’ or ‘the perfect man’, to be emulated by all Muslims.
The hard truth about Muhammed, as recorded in the Islamic ‘holy’ texts, is that far from being a a ‘holy prophet’ Muhammed was a sadistic sociopath.
Muhammed was a murderer, torturer, amputator, decapitator, slaver, looting stealing thief, rapist, human trafficker, misogynist, sex trafficker, child rapist, sexual deviant, genocidist and self proclaimed terrorist.
Muhammed was perhaps one of the most vile men in the pantheon of human history, a brutal barbarian afflicted with narcissistic personality disorder, consumed by unquenchable sexual lust, greed and power.
By any objective standard, Muhammed should have been incarcerated not venerated, reviled not revered.
Every pathology that afflicts Islam comes directly from this sick man, Muhammed, and the entire world suffers because of him.
If you compare the actions of Muhammed and Jesus, man to man, by any objective standard Muhammed is undeniably an 'anti-Christ'. The same inescapable conclusion can be reached by comparing Muhammed and the Guatama Buddha.
I challenge anyone, Muslim or ‘infidel’, to disprove any of my claims. ‘Infidels’ might try out of simple ignorance or wishful thinking, but Muslims cannot and will not.
Muslims know what I say is true, because it is written in black & white in the Koran, Ahadith and Sirah Rasul Allah, recorded for posterity for all to discover.
Muslims understand if the truth about Muhammed is widely known, the foundation of their entire ‘religion of peace’ collapses, as the savagery of Muhammed cannot be reconciled with higher human virtues like love, forgiveness, tolerance and peace.
Thus, rather than defend their barbarian prince they simply devolve into raging Mohammedan mobs, intimidating, terrorizing, burning, destroying and killing.
