I love Morgan Freeman. He said what so many of us have been thinking for a long long time. I think Black History Month is redundant, and actually a bit insulting at this point. It's no longer necassary to lump it into it's own category to make "the world see the Negro as a participant rather than as a lay figure in history." (Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Maybe it was in the 20's when "negro history week" was started by Dr. Woodson, and in the 60's during segregation when it became officially Black History Month, but not anymore. Freeman's exactly right, Black History is American History.

Good for Morgan. He's a class act.
But with so little education on how America came to be as it is today being taught, I don't see anything wrong with emphasizing the role of a particular group now and then. By the time I graduated high school (1983), history was my favorite subject, particularly concerning the turn of the century, but my education regarding blacks in America was almost nil. They were brought here as slaves and Lincoln freed them was about it. One of my favorite (and scariest)classes in college was African American studies.

The San Francisco Chronicle ran a series of profiles of famous African-Americans on the front page throughout this past February.
The vast majority of those profiled were actors, dancers, sports figures, and singer/rappers. Almost no scientists, lawyers, businessmen, doctors, soldiers, engineers, etc.
This is what we want to train young black people to aspire to? No wonder they're dropping out of school in droves.

Morgan Freeman is in the same class as Bill Cosby. The content of their character exceeds color of their skin.
These very wise men are drowned out by the cacophony who wants to play victim, or put their race in victim status, unfortunately.
