Coconut Oil And Alzheimers
I wrote to one of the handful of people I trust to interpret scientific studies, and one of the very few practitioners of truly evidence-based dietary medicine, Dr. Michael Eades. Here's my e-mail:
Subject: I know that the plural of anecdote is not data! But, this seems rather interesting.
Another link, with video of the guy and his doctor wife.
Here's what Dr. Eades e-mailed back:
Hey Amy--There is little doubt that ketones help with Alzheimer's (and a lot of other problems as well). And coconut oil contains MCT, which convert to ketones. Another fat that converts to ketones in the omega-3 fat alpha-lenolenic acid, found in flaxseed oil. Problem is, these oils will convert in minimal amounts in the face of a high-carb diet. There is some conversion, but not as much as there could be. High-carb diets themselves have been fingered as culprits in Alzheimer's, which some, myself included, refer to as diabetes of the brain.
Aside from the Alzheimer's issues, coconut oil is terrific for all kinds of things. Has a high content of lauric acid, which is an immunostimulant. We use it to cook just about everything in and even use it in shakes. Terrific stuff.
Best--
Mike
Dr. Eades on ketones here. More on coconut oil in a comprehensive report from Dr. Mary Enig here.
UPDATE: Gary Taubes just e-mailed me:
Hey, Just saw your recent blog (google alert) and noticed you're doing coconut oil. Question: have you tried Coconut butter? There's only a couple of companies that make it, and the one we've used is Artisana. They might sell it now at Whole foods or the Santa Monica coop in your neck of woods. Anyway, it's weirdly delicious, which coconut oil is not. Best, gt

I add a tablespoon each of coconut oil, coconut milk and MCT oil to my low carb whey protein shakes, and while I can't totally discount a placebo effect, I find that the resulting ketones circulating in my blood help keep my mind sharp and alert for at least 4-6 hours.

This is great! I just discovered two new recipes for coconut veggie soup and coconut black bean soup. I also like to add coconut milk to satay sauce. I love coconut milk, what a delicious ingredient. What a nice article to read to begin my day. (I'm assuming the milk has coconut oil in it, as it is rather fatty and probably isn't some other sort of oil)

I use it to wash my body, its one of the ingredients in Dr. Bronner's soap. It is great for washing makeup brushes.

And it keeps your coconuts from squeaking.

Rad, that was terrible -- and I loved it.

It's interesting...there are millions of pages, and zillions of pixels, devoted to this or that dietary advice, but there seem to be few if any sources that are serious and scientifically-reliable for those who are looking for valid advice rather than fads.

Dr. William H. Davis is another good one.
And a girl just published a 36-page debunking of the China Study that Eades has a post on.
It's tragic how horribly Americans have been advised by the AMA, doctors, and the government.
Here's a great hour by Chris Masterjohn on all of it: http://www.thelivinlowcarbshow.com/shownotes/1326/chris-masterjohn-on-cholesterol-episode-314/

We use coconut oil for sex. Usually, some of it gets into our mouths.
Steve Daniels at October 10, 2010 8:18 AM
Interesting... Amy, you probably know this, but most fast-food places used to fry their french fries in coconut oil prior to about 1990. Political pressure forced them to switch to lighter oils.
Cousin Dave at October 10, 2010 8:18 AM
Cousin Dave, all coconut oils are not equal. If it has been deodorized or hydrogenated or otherwise chemically processed, it is not the same beastie at all as virgin coconut oil.

The web site, Elana's Gluten Free Pantry, offers recipes that often make use of coconut oil and coconut flour.

She does her research and for the most part makes sound recommendations. As a bonus, her recipes use commonly available ingredients, as few as possible and which are often low on the glycemic index.

It's amazing in brownies-from-a-box! Use it instead of vegetable oil. My pot-head friends swear by it.

With regards to what Dr. Enig wrote about omega-3 fatty acids, this review of the scientific literature concurs that so called essential fatty acids in fish oil may not be actually that essential and may in fact be harmful unless your diet has high levels of saturated fat.

I use virgin coconut oil in a lot of my baking and cooking (it's actually a creamy solid not a liquid). It's great for you, espevially the lauric acid. I have a cousin with a seizure disorder and eats two tablespoons of coconut oil a day to help with the symptoms of it (his doctor recommended it so he could minimize the use of seizure meds). He says he really notices a difference since he started taking it. I'm unaware of any evidence supporting using coconut oil for seizure disorders though I've never looked.

Tony, thanks for the links to the studies.

I use lots of coconut oil. Mary G. Enig (Know Your Fats) writes that the medium-chain lauric acid it contains is both an antiviral and an antibacterial agent.
kishke at October 11, 2010 9:42 PM
I thought that coconut oil was totally dangerous and I've been avoiding it for years. Isn't coconut milk that is used in curry as bad as any other carb?
When did the science on this change.
belle de ville at October 12, 2010 3:27 PM
Coconut oil not coconut milk. No carbs in the oil. Lots of medium-chain lauric acid.

Thoughtfully planned out post! If ony I had noticed this a few days ago, it would have been a real problem solver.
