Some friends are Jewish and I worked with a guy who was retired Israeli military. Was only chest high to me but I bet he could kick my ass with one hand and he could swear in 5 languages.

That said I know the temperament and its pretty laid back until reaching a snapping point. I just read a statistic yesterday that said Detroit dropped it population from about 950K in 2000 to 715K in 2010. A drop even larger than Katrina ravage New Orleans.

I aways suspected that the underwear bomber flew to Detroit because he knew people there. The irony is that the plane was filled with many Arabs returning home from the holiday break (two of whom I work with.)

Jihad works well in the majority of the middle east and Asia because it's fueled by an oppressed and ignorant populace. In 90 minutes, 100 Israeli commandos took out 11 MiGs of the Ugandan air force, 45 soldiers of the Ugandan army, 8 terrorists, and rescued 103 hostages; all at a cost of 1 commando and three hostages (and Dora Bloch, who was later dragged from her hospital bed and murdered on Idi Amin's orders).

Entebbe is where Benjamin Netanyahu's older brother, Yonatan, was killed by a Ugandan sniper. He was the only commando killed in that operation. Lose a family member fighting terrorism and it colors your outlook.

BTW, the captain of the hijacked plane and his entire flight crew, all French, refused to leave the Jewish passengers and stayed behind with them, even though the hijackers were allowing them to leave with the non-Jewish hostages. For that, they were disciplined by Air France.

Interestingly, the Detroit MSA, as defined by the Census Bureau, is listed as having a population of 4.4M in 2009 -- only a little less than 2000. So it looks less like people have left the area altogether, and more like they have moved out of Detroit proper and into the surburbs.

Question for you, Amy: how realistic is the definition of the MSA? It includes all of Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, and Wayne counties. That pulls in some places that look pretty far afield to me, such as Waterford, Pontiac, and Novi. Can these places realistically be said to be part of suburban Detroit? Or are they just throwing those in there to pad the numbers? (Some of the Census Bureau's MSA definitions look excessively generous to me. For instance, New York's MSA includes the counties of Mommouth and Ocean in southern New Jersey, which is ridiculous.)

Most of the 9/11 hijackers attended at least some university. It didn't seem to innoculate them against jihad.

Nidal Hasan was a well-educated psychiatrist who hollered "allah akbar" before murdering 13 soldiers in his jihadi rampage at Fort Hood.

The current grandaddy of jihadis, Osama bin Laden, is also a reasonably well-educated man, though accounts vary on how many years of university he actually completed. It's apparently at least three.

There are other examples.

I would surmise that in the case of 'educated' muslims - note education does not mean capcity of rational thought - that the very nature of the world around them proves their religion to be a lie, and with so much of their self image and self worth contained within their identiy as one of "gods chosen" the fact that their religion reduces people to a state litle better than animals is something they find unpalatable.

And like any emotional toddler they need to destroy that which angers them, becuse the act of destruction 'proves' them to be 'better'
