Porn Use Causes Crime...To Drop?
Steve Chapman writes at reason what I've long known from reading research over the years on how when porn use goes up sex crimes go down:
The past two decades have been to electronic erotica what Thanksgiving is to gluttony. Never in history have more people had easier access to sexually explicit material in such vast abundance and such low cost. More than one out of every three Americans with Internet access regularly visits porn sites.By the logic of the puritans, we should be coping with an avalanche of collateral damage. But we're not.
Sexual violence? Rape has dropped by 86 percent in the United States since 1991. Harm to families? Divorce rates are down 25 percent during the same period.
As for sex trafficking, no one really knows how much goes on, or whether it's rising or falling. But when the Bush administration mounted a crackdown on the problem, The Washington Post reported in 2007, it found only "1,362 victims of human trafficking brought into the United States since 2000, nowhere near the 50,000 a year the government had estimated."
Numerous studies have failed to prove that viewing prurient pictures has any deleterious consequences to individuals. Just because the occasional rapist or child molester blames his crimes on skin flicks doesn't make it true.
Critics claim that pornography can take over some people's lives, but so can fantasy baseball. Porn addiction is not a recognized psychiatric disorder. And what if it were? Alcoholism is a form of addiction, but we don't ban wine.
Of course, we can't be sure the porn consumption causes crimes to decrease, but when access to porn increases, time and time again, crimes decrease.

Ordinarily, I would infer something from Amy's choice of words, but we all know that Amy would never inject bad puns into her blog entries.

@: "rape has dropped by 86 percent in the United States since 1991."
_______________
So, what does that mean for the "1 in 4" women is raped (BS) stat we hear about?
Trust at April 24, 2011 6:40 AM
@trust -
It's gone up to 1 in 3. Seriously.
Must protect The Narrative.
brian at April 24, 2011 7:00 AM
It's interesting, but I'm not convinced that cause and effect exists. Rates for all types of violent crime are down since 1990, and to the extent that anyone has been able to figure out a reason, it appears to be mostly demographic. Most violent crimes are committed by teenagers and younger adults, and the tail end of the Boomer bubble cleared that age bracket in the '90s.
I'm not at all anti-porn. I just want to throw out the usual reminder that correlation does not equal causation. What is noteworthy, however, is that the increasing availability of porn has not correlated to an increase in sex crimes, since no such increase has occurred.

Yes, but that doesn't matter to the demagogues.
Video games cause violence. That's The Narrative. Violent crime in all categories has been dropping continuously since video games have been around.
Reality does not comport with The Narrative, therefore reality is wrong.
That's all you need to know when you're dealing with New Age/Progressive/Liberal/Fascist/Communist/Control Freak/Nanny-state pieces of shit.
They have their own reality, and it is right. Who you gonna believe, me or your lyin' eyes?
brian at April 24, 2011 8:28 AM
I agree with the cause/correlation point. However, these results have been duplicated in other cultures. Even more importantly, in cultures where porn is accepted, there hasn't been the opposite effect.
BTW, one possibility for the drop in crime is that we stopped adding lead to gasoline and are eradicating it from homes. Seriously.
A contributing factor may also be a general drop in censorship across the board (think the war on comic books in the 50s.) A repressed society is a very dangerous one.

The Freakanomics explanation for crime going down is Roe v. Wade.
All of the unwanted babies who would have been born in the 1970s and raised by less-than-caring mothers, or raised without fathers, or raised in other sub-standard conditions (regardless of race or economic condition), has gone down (still happens, but less than previously) -- all of those babies who were never born in the 1970s never grew up to become criminals in the 1990s.
That's not a pro or con abortion position -- just a statistically validated observation and theory.
Howard Owens at April 24, 2011 10:16 AM
Oh, I should mention, the Freakanomics guys attribute about 60 percent of the crime drop to Roe v. Wade.
Community policing, restorative justice, other reforms, have also played a factor.
Howard Owens at April 24, 2011 10:18 AM
When it comes to rape statistics, I prefer this one:
http://www.amnestyusa.org/violence-against-women/violence-against-women---a-fact-sheet/page.do?id=1108440
"In the US, a woman is raped every 6 minutes," according to this site. To which I can only say, we need to go find her and help her out!
Patrick at April 24, 2011 11:07 AM
I suspect if we had a policy of making sex easily available, especially to young men, we would see even less crime.
Have not nearly all the mass murderer-types been estranged, socially-rejected type men?
Legalize porno, legalize the sex industry. Keep government out of private lives.
BOTU at April 24, 2011 3:52 PM
"Legalize porno, legalize the sex industry. Keep government out of private lives."
Porno is legal, as it should be. Legalize the sex industry? As in prostitution? No way. Most of those women are trafficked and are basically sex slaves. Yes, even in the States. When you visit a prostitute, you're essentially raping her.
This doesn't change much when prostitution is legal, such as in The Netherlands. They're mostly exported from other lands. I doubt many of those women are in possession of their passports.

"BTW, one possibility for the drop in crime is that we stopped adding lead to gasoline and are eradicating it from homes. Seriously."
Hahahahaha! That was brilliant! You couldn't have made your very good point any better than that.
For the anecdotal record, I've been consuming porn more than usual lately (I haven't gotten laid in a woefully long time) and I've managed to not rape anyone. There's all the proof you need!
In case you missed the inference, by "consuming porn" I mean pitifully shucking off a few oysters whilst my pants are around my ankles in front of my computer. My belt buckle tends to make a really annoying sound banging against my hardwood floor as I shamefully shuffle to the bathroom to birdbath away the wad.
You're welcome for the mental image. Hee-hee!

whistledick - you're a fucking moron
lujlp at April 26, 2011 7:53 AM
See what happens when you don't get enough porn? You start lashing out at people like Lujlp.
ErikZ at April 27, 2011 2:03 PM
Well comeon Erik, I defy anyone to tell me how Heidi Fliess and her girls were slaves when the were charging a few grand for a blow job
lujlp at April 27, 2011 5:08 PM
"Most of those women are trafficked and are basically sex slaves." -- So that's what I said that prompted that attack?
Note the use of the word "most". It's an often used English word meaning, "the majority, but not all". You believe Heidi Fliess is a typical example of a pimp that presents an accurate picture of prostitution?
I'm not going to say it, but you know I'm thinking it.
whistleDick at April 28, 2011 12:55 AM
Hey lujip,
Here's a bad joke involving expensive blow jobs. It might cheer you up.
It seems ... a guy pulls up to a corner hooker and asks, "How much for a blow job?"
"$100, Sweetie."
As the hooker continues to lean into the window, the John pulls his penis out of his pants and begins masturbating.
"What the hell are you doing", says the hooker.
"Well, for a hundred bucks, you're not getting the easy one."
whistleDick at April 28, 2011 8:15 AM
Oops. I forgot the question mark after "What the hell are you doing?". You win. I am a fucking moron.
