Food Stamps For Thought
Leroy Fick, a Michigan man who won $2 million on the state's lottery TV show and is driving a brand new Audi convertible is still using food stamps, he told a TV station. From an AP story in the Freep:
Fick says the Department of Human Services told him he could continue to use the card, which is paid with tax dollars. He told WNEM: "If you're going to ... try to make me feel bad, you aren't going to do it."

Pretty shrewd, actually. Once Leroy blows the 2 mil on an Escalade, rims, grills and crack whores, he'll need that food stamp money to eat on.

You've got to waste a lot of money to rack up a trillion dollar deficit. Our government is up to the task.
MarkD at May 18, 2011 6:10 AM
Why the hell is someone on food stamps buying $20 lottery tickets? He should have to forfeit the entire $2 million on the basis of fraud.
It's like a discussion I had the other night- those people who don't pay for health care have much better health care than I do, even though I pay $900 a month for my family health care insurance. I've seriously gone from being angry about these instances to just being depressed.

If I were a Michigan resident, I'd invoice him for my tax dollars and sue him in Small Claims for the money.

As In understand it, your eligibility for all those programs is based on the PREVIOUS year's income. So if the renewal date hasn't come round yet, he's not in the wrong, technically, just taking advantage of a loophole.
In other words, he's doing a very good job of being a rich person in the United States.
Vinnie Bartilucci at May 18, 2011 9:03 AM
nah, Vinnie, he's doing well at being an entitled person in the US. That cuts across all economic lines... from the "Do you KNOW who I am?" elite pricks to the section 8 [6? 10?]subsidized housing resident who trashes the place because it's not theirs...
SwissArmyD at May 18, 2011 9:16 AM
He didn't have enough money for food, but had enough to be buying lottery tickets.
Joe at May 18, 2011 9:27 AM
On the bright side going by how winning lotteries have impacted people in the long run, he will probably be pennyless in 10 yrs.
People disagree with why, the main theories are: Won money is not respected/ thought of as real and gets blown through in nothing flat.
People who play lotteries are in generall stupid about handling money (ergo playing lottery) and will continue handling money stupidly.
And finally, winning a large amount getls loooked at a being rich, and they (and most Democrats) think that being rich equals having infinite amounts of money. And it can't possibly run out.
Joe at May 18, 2011 9:34 AM
Actually, Joe, you have not only described the relationship between stupid people and the lottery, you have also described the relationship between the U.S. government and the federal reserve. Nice job.
Pirate Jo at May 18, 2011 9:39 AM
Well I had it on my mind, was arguing with someone how raising taxes on the rich couldn't ballance anything. They couldn't get the concept that rich is not infinite money. That even if you made the top 1000 people in America penniless how little it would be, in relationship to the deficit. Forget the idea just taxing the current income, but take everything they ever had, still not enough.
Joe at May 18, 2011 10:10 AM
"As In understand it, your eligibility for all those programs is based on the PREVIOUS year's income."
Nope, income in the last month, and you have maybe 14 days to report changes. At least here in TX. They verify income every 6 months when you have to reapply.
momof4 at May 18, 2011 10:21 AM
Hey, it could be worse. Check out the social contribution of one of Michigan's latest lottery winners:

No good deed goes unreturned.

"Nope, income in the last month"
I can easily see it in 2 ways:
A. no where on the form does it ask how much you win, only what your salary is.
B. If he went for the one time payoff, what is his income 2 months after winning the lottery, possibly zero. Sitting on a wad of cash, yes, but his "income" for the month is probably zero.
Joe at May 18, 2011 12:07 PM
Geez, he didn't even buy a Government Motors car... in Michigan no less!

This outlines why he's still able to collect food stamps.
I wish they would go back to the old stamps that you had to actually tear out of a book and hand to the cashier...there's some shame associated with that because people behind you know what you're using and make comments - I know, I was there at one point in my life. Although I was using them out of need as opposed to greed, I was motivated to get my life back on track so I didn't have to use them. The EBT cards make it way too easy. Oh and WTF...7-11 now accepts EBT cards?!?! What could food stamp recipients possibly be buying at 7-11?
sara at May 18, 2011 3:42 PM
Hot dogs at three times the price of the grocery store. Chips at twice the price, 2 2 liters for 2 dollars.
EBT money should only be spendable on basic food - fruits, vegetables, generic sliced bread, and raw meat.
Not on potato chips ,or corndogs, or pre packaged meals, or ice cream and soda pop.
lujlp at May 18, 2011 4:19 PM
Hey lujlp-
I like your artwork. Fractals are incredibly cooooooooooollllllll.....
Eric at May 18, 2011 4:25 PM
Wow- I'm going through your website now- totally beautiful artworks! All these years I had no idea. Pinwheel is my personal favorite so far.
Eric at May 18, 2011 4:30 PM
Thanks, the pinwheel was my first and least favorite I randomly messed with the colors and varibale and ran the rendering feature to see what it all was about.
I have a bunch more I've done but I cant put them up until I find a good graphics program to generate a decent looking star feild to place in their backgrounds, I suppose I should just put them up until I find something that works and then replace them.
The program, if you are interested, is apophisys. The latest version is 7x and fairly handy, and easy to use
lujlp at May 18, 2011 7:27 PM
"What could food stamp recipients possibly be buying at 7-11?"
Potato chips and Coke, of course. That way, they still have cash for beer and cigarettes. And lottery tickets.
Not Sure at May 18, 2011 7:51 PM
All this really means is that he's too ignorant to invest his money such that it generates any income. He probably stuck it in the bank at .5 % interest rate earning him a whopping $10,000 a year in income! And if he's unemployed, this is why he still qualifies for foodstamps.
Matt at May 18, 2011 10:47 PM
Hey. Don't complain too much about EBT being used at 7-11. It could be worse.
Just recently there was an expose in Washington state about them being used in tribal casinos.
jimg at May 18, 2011 11:59 PM
Here:
Through a public records request the KING 5 Investigators got the addresses of all welfare card cash transactions in the month of July.
We compared that with the addresses of all casinos, card rooms and bingo halls in the state. In one month alone, records show withdrawals of welfare cash made through ATMs at 113 casinos and card rooms. That's one fifth of all the State's gambling establishments.

I'm pretty sure they've got an "list any other assets" line here in texas, as well as all bank account balances. That being easily gone around by the majority on it here in texas who live a cash under the table life.
momof4 at May 19, 2011 5:48 AM
No they cannot, but the problem is the motor vehicles can if there is a unpaid accident rusulting from something you have caused. If you were found at fault and the damages not paid , the license can go bye bye.
