Starting Tonight! Advice Goddess Radio - My Live Weekly Call-In Advice Show
My first show is tonight -- 7 p.m. Pacific time, for an hour. Gregg is producing and put the whole thing together. As for what the show's about, here's how I'm billing it:
Nationally syndicated advice columnist Amy Alkon takes your questions on love, dating, sex, relationships, and manners.
Call-in number once the show is on and live (at 7 p.m.): (347) 326-9761
I really need you all to call in. It'll make for a much more fun and interesting show, and you can get free advice, live. I also may invite people to weigh in on particular issues.
Basically, this is your chance to get for free what I give in a private session -- though I'm not going to talk to one person for the whole hour.
You can listen at this link starting at 7 p.m. Pacific Time (10 p.m. Eastern, etc.):
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/amyalkon/2011/10/10/the-advice-goddess-show-amy-alkon
There will also be a podcast you can download later.
The show will air weekly at 7 p.m. Pacific on Sunday nights. For a link to the regular Sunday night show:

Thanks to Crid, Adam Bein, and all the others who bugged me to start doing podcasts and/or radio, and thanks to Jay J. Hector who was our call-in guinea pig last night for an hour as we figured out all the bells and whistles.
UPDATE: Download the podcast here:
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/amyalkon/2011/10/10/the-advice-goddess-show-amy-alkon
"Play in your default player" downloads it as a podcast. "Download" makes it play on your computer. Yeah, a little bassackwards. Sorry.
UPDATE: Books and authors recommended on the show include Nathaniel Branden (The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem), Albert Ellis (A Guide To Rational Living), and evolutionary psychologist Gad Saad (The Consuming Instinct: What Juicy Burgers, Ferraris, Pornography, and Gift Giving Reveal About Human Nature).

Congrats, congrats, congrats!!!

Oh, boy. I hope you have a good call screener, given the past behavior of some here!
But I bet you'll have fun - it'll be a (wait for it) "rush". I am so funny. Lookin'.

I'm so happy you're finally getting to do it!! I'm so happy you'll be doing it weekly. I am hoping to be home in time tonight to listen and call in. If I don't make it, good luck and you will hear from me next week.
Kristen at October 9, 2011 4:12 PM
Not bad. A few too many "umms". I can stand listening once a week.

It was a fun enough way to pass an hour on a Sunday evening. Almost makes me wish I dated so I could call in and have a report from the front lines.

Congratulations on your first show, Amy. I only caught part of it because I was watching a couple of the segments on 60 Minutes.
Early on, I heard you giving advice to men about talking to women and dealing with rejection. I may have missed it so I'm curious; did you also give advice to women on how to flirt with men?
Regarding the caller at the end who was talking about being in France...she mentioned how French men seemed much more likely to hit on her when she was with another man than if she was by herself and she said she felt that American men were the opposite. That may be the case with American men but I've seen a lot of guys talk about the phenomenon I've noticed with American women: they're not more likely to hit on you when you're with another woman -- because, of course, women rarely hit on men -- but they are more likely to check you out. It's as if being with another woman certifies you as desirable and, therefore, other women find you more desirable.

I talked about women being gracious and kind in turning down men who ask.
Flirting with men is another show topic.

OK...thanks. I look forward to hearing what you have to say.
Your comment about French men and how they dress, comparing them to gay men, was interesting. It makes me wonder if many American women think an American guy is gay if he happens to dress nice or have a sense of style.

Jim, I have to laugh -- in post after post here, you go on no information and then invent something out of it in your own head. I've spent a good deal of time in Paris and I dated a French author for a wee while. Men there are frou-frou and comfortable with it in a way men are not here, to say the very least. They wear pink shirt and pink shorts and all sorts of things men here would never wear.
Jim, you are life deaf and tone-deaf and Paris/France-deaf. You've already ruined the discussion in another comments section by making pronouncements about people you've never met -- how they "must" be. Kindly avoid doing it here as well.

I really hate when people weigh in on stuff they know nothing about.
It makes for a boring comments section and gives me unnecessary work.
And I really resent people boring up my comments section, especially.
I don't weigh in on climate change/global warming. Why? Because I am not a physicist and climatology is extremely complicated. I am aware that I am not informed enough -- and will not be informed enough -- to make pronouncements about it, one way or another. Hence, I do not make pronouncements about it, or speculations that jump off of it.
If you are not versed in Paris and French men...AVOID SPECULATING ON THEM...or coming to conclusions (based on nothing but your imagination) about how American men are (boohoo!) viewed based on the French men you know fuck all about.

I enjoyed the show and I'm glad you're doing it. After hanging up, I thought of a few questions I could have asked so if you need callers next week, I'll be happy to call with a few.

Just listened to the podcast (twice!) this morning, because I am horizontal and unconscious when it airs live, much to my sorrow.
I enjoyed every minute of it, even (especially!) the little nervous pauses and "ummms." They were so charming! I am already almost dreading the time when you get accustomed to it all and become more polished.
Congrats Amy, this is a winner! Just please - please don't quit your written blog. I have limited tolerance for the spoken word, and I can read many times faster than I can listen.
gharkness at October 10, 2011 7:04 AM
I enjoyed listening. I almost called when you were ramping up for calls but I knew I didn't have enough to bring on the subject of too-early gifts to make my call worth your taking.
You were doing fine and contra earlier, I thought you did a good job of avoiding the umms and errs. It's not easy to talk consistently on air.

I should have asked people to call with comments on the topic or not. Callers really make it fun for me, and get me in "the zone." Having to talk for an hour flat is scary and also, it leaves me no time to take a drink of water.

I'm sorry I missed it. My time would have been much better spent listening to you than watching the Atlanta Falcons find yet another way to lose a football game.

"Having to talk for an hour flat is scary and also, it leaves me no time to take a drink of water."
Sure it does - make it part of the show. Good radio isn't always packed with talk, because the audience has to have time to think. Check the pace and relax. Al Sharpton can take a whole minute for thirty words and still has people hang on all of them.
Tough to focus your divided attention, I know, but there's no one arguing with you, no rush to get your ideas out.
Easy for me to say since I'm not the one on the mike, but this'll work!

I just wanted to let you know I really enjoyed your radio hour. Good topics and you have a great voice for broadcast. Despite the few glitches, the hour moved fast. I also love the written blog!
