I'd hazard the guess that it has to do with the idea that, with alll STDs the person got it from someone else in their past. Like the saying you aren't having sex with just him, you are having sex with everyone he had sex with.
Also looks like the shadows mostly pair up guys with girls, with on gay couple.

I'm pretty sure I don't want to hear their presentation.
The shadows are different because they're ashamed, and trying to distance themselves from the people (and they're not too happy about the herpes, either).
