A Business Should Be Able To Hire Only Hot Women If They So Choose
What's next, making strip clubs hire the old, obese and walker-bound?
"Take a couple of turns around that pole, Granny."
"I said, TAKE A COUPLE OF TURNS AROUND THAT POLE!"
A Boston area coffee place, apparently known for its attractive female servers, is under investigation by the EEOC for discrimination in hiring -- something which the government should not be meddling in:
There are links to the story in the Boston Herald, but I've posted the Daily Mail link that has some pix:
A Boston-area coffee shop chain known for its attractive, young female servers is under investigation by federal authorities for employment discrimination. But executives for the 29-store Marylou's chain, which started off in Hanover, Massachusetts, call the probe by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission a 'witch hunt'.
They claim that the workers the chain hires are based on the applicant pool, most of whom tend to be younger women.
...State Sen. Robert L.Hedlund said the probe is ridiculous. 'Why, because they haven't hired old overweight men who want to wear a pinkT-shirt and serve coffee?' he said.
'The federal government has better things to do with my tax dollars than to harass a legitimate business.'
If a business does better by hiring hot chicks, why would it be the government's business to force them to hire indiscriminately?

Why does it have to be granny. Why could it not grandpappy. I think some older retires can use a job.
Reminds me of the book Incompetence by Rob Grant. A minor character. Was the old elderly stripper called Twinkle

Women don't really go to strip clubs except as a novelty.

That is the same as the EEOC going after Hooters. The wings aren't that great, but you enjoy the view while waiting for the order to arrive.
The EEOC is not really needed anymore.

IN Texas, my understanding is that strippers aren't actually employees of the strip club. They have to pay to perform there. I'm not exactly sure how the legalese works, and they get no taxes withheld.
If being attractive is central to the business of the company (Hooters, etc) then they should be able to put it in the job description.

They get to discriminate in Hollywood based on looks. Why's that ok with the EOC, I wonder?
Dragonhawk at May 27, 2012 7:38 AM
M4, the ballroom club we go to kind of works the same way. The instructors are independent contractors; the students pay them, and then they pay a floor fee to the club.

Here in Oregon, there are a number of road side coffee stands where the baristas are clad in bikinis. One chain goes by the name "Twin Perks". It's a business model that works for them.
A few of them got into trouble a while back for offering a bit more than coffee for a little more in the tip jar. The gasps and finger pointing came and went, and now they are pretty much left alone.

Funny-faced character actresses should soon start to sue for not getting the parts that go to Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie.

Presumably, otherwise-attractive handicapped people aren't eligible for employment either, right?

Besides, in some circles, black women aren't hot. Hispanic women aren't hot.
I know! Weird, right?
But I bet Amy's a lot more eager for government to intrude upon hiring decisions than she's letting on.
In many corners of our economy, gays are not seen as sufficiently attractive employees. They scare off the customers, and they freak out their co-workers.
See what I'm getting at here?

From what I understand, the women at hooters are considered entertainers, and therefore the employer is able to have requirements that would otherwise be construed as discriminatory.

Amy isn't "eager" for government intrusion - just had a talk about this this afternoon. Even though I think it's reprehensible to deny entry to blacks, Jews (me), or others to a business, I support a private business' right to do that.
I would not patronize a business that was racist, and I would probably picket it. But, I truly do think government should not intrude in these ways.
Thanks for telling me what I think, though. Always charming when people do that.

You're one of the few people who would care that much. I know I'm not going to research every business I might ever work with to determine whether I approve of their hiring practices. Even people who disapprove aren't likely to haul themselves twice as far for whatever they need, so they'll just complain about it on Facebook later and keep buying at the same store.

I live within walking distance of a Marylou's, have patronized them for years, and I actually had no idea this was even a thing for them. Their staff looks like the staff at almost every coffee shop around the greater Boston area...young and female is pretty much standard for those jobs.
That being said, I feel really bad for them. This is a fun and unique chain...from the bright pink to the interesting coffee flavors, and I've never had bad service there.
I would be highly suspicious of any claims that they were passing over more qualified people to hire these girls. They do their job, they smile when you come in, and they joke around with you while they get your order (correct!).
I know I sound like I'm secretly the owner or something, but I'm not, just a loyal patron. It's gotta be tough to carve out a niche in a Dunkin Donuts/Starbucks world, just thought I should show them some love!
