In Indiana now...
...I thought of you today as we hit KY...directly north of the TN border...DEA Drug search on I-75...starting at the Rest Area and 1 mile up on 75. There were signs warning the public of the search...oh...yes, they had a black man in an old sports car pulled over. surprise?
and I thought I was free to travel on the USA roads...silly me.

Introductory quote for The Cowing of the Medical Profession by Dr. Richard N. Fogoros, at The Covert Rationing Blog.
Floyd Ferris, a bureaucrat in the novel Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand:

Did you really think that we want those laws to be observed? We want them broken. You’d better get it straight that it’s not a bunch of boy scouts you’re up against.
The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them.
One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone?
But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted and you create a nation of law-breakers.

Probable cause? We don't need no steenking probable cause. There are enough laws that you are always breaking some of them.

I used to think that I'd go south for work one day, but no more. I'll stay on this side of the border. The "Land of the Free" doesn't seem so free.

EPA Official's "crucify" comment
=== ===
[edited] In a 2010 video, EPA Region VI Administrator Al Armendariz explained his “philosophy of enforcement” to his staff, which he acknowledged being crude and perhaps inappropriate, but shared anyway: ”It is kind of like how the Romans conquered villages in the Mediterranean. They’d go into a Turkish town, find the first five guys, and crucify ‘em. That little town was really easy to manage for the next few years.”
“You make examples out of people who are not complying with the law. You hit ‘em as hard as you can. There’s a deterrent effect. And companies that are smart see that. They decide that it’s time to clean up. And that won’t happen unless you have somebody out there making examples.”

This might be excused if the EPA were enforcing a few laws with clearly beneficial results. But, this is the EPA enforcing thousands of vague laws, most with imperceptible results.
President George Washington: Government is not reason; it is not eloquence. It is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.

Bah, George Washington was a terrorist.

I take it that means you're from Canuckistan? say, how's that freedom of speech thing working out for y'all?
Oh, yeah, I forgot. You have to mind your P's and Q's or the local or national Human Rights Commission might start to investigate your racist, bigoted, homophobic, mysogynistic ways.

Also, such stops have been judged ok for a number of years. Usually, they're looking for people under the influence.
I am kind of surprised they did this on an interstate highway. That's the sort of stuff that gets people - specifically commercial operators - to complain.

I R A Darth Aggie, you're absolutely right. The softness of our free speech rights is a shame and the HRCs are an abomination. But you've got the ADA, the EPA, the DEA, and the Endangered Species Act, so you're not exactly leading the world in freedom.
In Canada, prostitution is legal, marijuana use is tolerated, and abortion is not addressed by criminal law. Plus, compared to the US, we have hardly anyone in prison.
Should I even mention that your President thinks he has the right to detain me without trial or kill me with a drone missile without due process?

The questions:
If any they can't articulate the cause or answers "No" to any of the questions, the next response is "Please step away from the vehicle, I am departing."
I need to get those printed up and posted in my back windows.

The McCarthy witch hunts weren't catching any victims, so the only solution people could think of was to tighten the screws! If you read what sorts of laws and restrictive policies were being conjured up to raise (or lower) the guarantee of loyalty, you'll want to throw up.
"Plus ca change, plus ca meme."

"I do not consent to a search."
"Am I legally required to answer your question?"
"Am I being detained or am I free to go?"
Don't forget to be recording. They can record you, you can record them.
