It's Supposed To Be A Melting Pot
There's a letter to Romney from "a Latina," Ailen J. Arreaza, in Creative Loafing Charlotte. It starts out like this:
Dear Mr. Romney,
As a Cuban-American, I'm anxiously awaiting the day when a person of Latino heritage takes the oath of office for president of the United States.
I dream of a time when a salsa band plays at the inaugural ball, plantains are a staple in the White House kitchen, and the first family's children speak Spanish at home...
Can you imagine that in France anybody would suggest that it would be a good thing if the first family's children would "speak Polish at home"?
My family came here and learned the language pronto. It was part of becoming American, which they valued greatly.
And I do think it's important for kids to learn languages other than their native tongue -- but that's not what she's talking about.

If you read the rest of it -- her decision to not support Romney is because he is not saying he is ethnic.
His comments in the video is because there are over 110 million of the population is receiving government aid.

These people have no idea how the country was built, so they have no idea how to sustain or improve on it.
They just want a nanny. One that talks like them.

Dear Ms Arreaza,
As an old school imperialist, I'm anxiously awaiting the day when a person of Saxon heritage takes the oath of office for dictator of your native pestilent hole.
I dream of a time when a civilized band plays at the inaugural ball, kidney and cabbage are a staple in El Capitalio's kitchen, and the first family's children speak English at home...

Ya. This coming from a "Latina" (I really hate that word) whose country island has been held hostage by a commie-pinko-thug whose first order of business was to ban certain instruments and songs that the bands in Cuba could play. And it was the gulag for those musicians who didn't obey.
Yes, God forbid you base a voting decision on something more substantial than the ethnicity of a candidate! Whattah puke!
Hey sister... From one "Latina" to another - "Eat. My. Shorts."

A couple comments.
First, we need to understand that many in our "melting pot" want to be Americans, but they don't want America to be America. Mexicans want America to be an improved version of Mexico, Middle Easterners want it to be an improved version of their Middle East traditions, the French want an improved version of France, and so forth.
Second, America is prided on free speech. And while free speech is under constant assault, many have simply been spoiled by it. It is literally punishable to death or torture to complain about a dictator's country, but here we are largely free to spew any venom we want. We complain more than people in other countries, but that is not because we have more to complain about, it is because we have more freedom to do so. Those who have much seem to appreciate it less and grow spoiled, just like children who never hear the word "no."

Know any French people?
They don't. That's why they're here.
One I can think of in particular loves how it's possible to be an entrepreneur in America, highly values our Constitution, and especially free speech. I mentioned François Hollande to him and he about threw up and then went on a rant about all the things wrong with France. He's here for a reason and it isn't the food.

Just one French person. Fair enough, i retract most of my post. I shouldn't have included the way i did.
I'll simply say many, but not all, people in the melting pot want all of America to be an improved version of their homeland.

As a white man I anxiously await the day when a white man is sworn in to office, when the band plays "Hail to the Chief", when white people everywhere can rise up and throw off the chains of responsibility for the happiness and success of non-white people and say, finally and truthfully, "Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty we're free at last!".
If we're going to be race-baiting assholes about our politics, let's go all out with it. How about a new law that anyone who doesn't possessive a skin reflectivity rating over 62.5 must be deported or converted to Soylent Green tablets?
Just to get the discussion started.

As someone who took a few economics and math courses, in college, I anxiously await the day when we swear in somone who doesn't think money grows on trees, and doesn't think the solution to our current economic woes, is running the treasury printing presses 24/7. I frankly don't care if this person, is black, brown, yellow or white, male or female, just as long as they have a backbone. I could care less what they are eating in the White house.

"Mexicans want America to be an improved version of Mexico"
Sorry my momma is Mexican and that's never been my experience with any immigrant group except fundamentalist religious ones. I grew up with tons of influence from tons of immigrants. I have a little old Japanese lady as a friend that was in the Interment Camps. In my neighborhood I have tons of Japanese shopping centers, with only japanese language. Does that mean the Japanese never integrated? Nope. Next city over I have "Little Saigon". But all the American born kids of immigrants speak the language and inter mary. You dont know how many of my friends are mixed-raced couples (hint: most).
"I dream of a time when a salsa band plays at the inaugural ball, plantains are a staple in the White House kitchen, and the first family's children speak Spanish at home..."
Interesting she says this because this is only a latino thing for Cubans and Puerto Ricans. Mexicans for example dont eat plantains and they listen to cumbia.

"the French want an improved version of France"
By the way there are tons of Frenchies where I live and my French friend told me they love sticking together. He was not into that. (But all people love having friends of their own culture)

They may not want America to be an improved version of Mexico, but that's what ends up happening every place the newly-entered hispanics gather. I'm not saying it's all bad, either, I love the fruit-bar dude on the bikecart, and I married me a hispanic. But assimilate they do not, for a generation or two. A lot of schools around here have to teach in spanish.
The parks in hispanic areas around here are very safe after dark, though, b/c they all have their kids out there till 11 or midnight or so. So that's a perk, too. Till their older brothers get drunk and start fighting.

I look forward to the day when I will be judged on the content of my character, not the color of my skin, and people who make snap judgments based on superficial differences will be laughed at, instead of lionized as "Diversity experts" or "Community Organizers".
I've been looking forward to that day for 40 years, as a matter of fact, who the hell do I have to sleep with to make it happen, already? FFS, I was chatting with some folks the other day, and they told me some crap about a little place in Tennessee where supposedly the KKK still reigns supreme and anyone with even a hint of a tan is instantly strung up. The fact that they believe this says more about the people telling me this krep and the world they live in...I don't even.
Are there still bigots in the world? Sure, just look at the people yelling "Racist!" every 5 seconds. They keep themselves employed by keeping the stupidity alive.

I call bullshit on the TN thing. It's got quite the melanin-blessed population, in both major flavors.

As Jim P points out above, you're taking this excerpt out of context. A later section reads:
"You seem to think that all it takes to win the Latino vote is a shared heritage with us. That even though you’ve said you’d veto the Dream Act and support Arizona’s “show me your papers” law, we would all vote for you if your last name was Lopez or Rodriguez. That instead of casting our ballots based on the candidate’s policies and values, we only care about appearances. Frankly, I find your position extremely offensive."
That's the authors point--the opening is just leading up to that.
