One of the themes in my book is the current impoverishment of the art world because of its knee-jerk hostility to religion, which is everywhere. That kind of sneering at religion that Christopher Hitchens specialized in, despite his total ignorance of religion and his unadmirable lifestyle, was no model for atheism. I think Hitchens was a burden to atheism in terms of his decadent circuit of constant parties and showy blather. He was a sybaritic socialite and roué — not a deep thinker — whose topical, meandering writing will not last. And I’m no fan of Richard Dawkins’ sniping, sniggering style of atheism, either.

A responsible atheist needs to be informed about religion in order to reject it. But the shallow, smirky atheism that’s au courant is simply strengthening the power of the Right. Secular humanism is spiritually hollow right now because art is so weak. If you don’t have art as a replacement for the Bible, then you’ve got nothing that is culturally sustaining.

Is the solution to portable meth labs really selling meth at 7-11, to anyone?

$20 bucks says if heroin and oxy were cheaper than aspirin the only people going for meth would be those wanting to kill themselves.

Drug use has many causes.

Drug abuse has only one. The person wants out but is too scared to eat a bullet, They want a warm fuzzy feeling that makes it physically impossible to FEEL

You want to end drug abuse? End physcological trauma. There is no other way

My 13 year old son can get pot, cocaine, x, meth, and oxy with no trouble(so he says). You know what he can't get? Alcohol.

Amy, somewhat off-topic. I was in LA decades ago and I remember being somewhat shocked at the drive-thru liquor stores. Do they still have those?

I have made the decision to become a sheep dog.

For years I have lived with the Stephen King quote: "There's something in you that's like biting on tinfoil...it's like God left a part of you out when he made you inside me." by his mother to Larry Underwood. That has been with me forever.

I have decided that it is part of being a sheepdog. The sheepdog decides they are going to go towards the sound of "gun fire" instead of running away. I hope I'm never to be in Christopher C. Amoroso's position but it won't stop me.

The sheepdog also has to tell the rest of the world to fuck off at points. That is the tinfoil. If you are going to protect others -- if the protected can't stand CCW, open carry and firearms -- why should I protect your ass? You are disarming the sheepdog while not disarming the wolf.

I sometimes wonder about that. I mean, in some neighborhoods at least, how difficult would it be for teens to raid their neglectful parents' liquor cabinet and not have them care - or other adults' cabinets?
