New York State: Inka Binka Better Not Drink
There's a NY Post story on a proposal Cuomo is expected to sign on New York's State's new "sin" taxes on booze, new limits on the numbers of new bars and liquor stores, and and other regulations on alcohol consumption. @MGraham969 tweets:
Of COURSE NY is regulating booze. When your neighbors pay for your health care, they get to tell you to stop drinking.
Supposedly, the nannying is intended to cut down on underage drinking and on binge drinking by adults.
Like anyone who is determined to drink alcohol will be swayed by having to walk an extra block or pay more for it.
They should rename the state: New Mom.

I guess we'll be welcoming speakeasies and bootleg gin back to New York.

Surprise! Prohibition brought to you by the people you would not expect to enact it! Progressives...
Wasn't it going to be the conservatives?
First, they went for the hard drugs. I said nothing because it is a no brainer! Drugs are bad m'kay.
Next, they came for the cigarettes, I said nothing as I was not a smoker.
Next they came for the soft drugs. I said nothing because I did not smoke dope.
Then, they came for the booze, I did not care much as I rarely drink and don't like beer.
Then they went for the salt. I started to care but I could always salt the food up as much as I want.
Then, they came for the bacon. Those mother______ are going down!

I look with amusement to the day when Alabama has more liberal liquor laws than New York does. It seems to be not very far away.

Given the costs of HIV and AIDS, will the public health authorities start regulating gay sex?
I'm obese (but getting better thanks to Gary Taubes and Amy Alkon for my finding of Gary Taubes) so if my life is going to circumscribed due to public health costs, I think that should be applied to everyone.
PS I have paid my own way on health care since I was last covered by am employer plan. I act on the belief that no other person is obliged to pay for my health care. That's a form of slavery in which I will not participate.

From the linked article:
The plan includes provisions to:
* Increase taxation on alcohol sales.
* Decrease alcohol outlet density.
* Increase motor-vehicle checkpoints.
* Boost surveillance of adult alcohol purchases for minors.
Things progressive authoritarians love: Increased taxes, decreased competition for cronies, more surveillance of citizens, and plenty of checkpoints.

Is it OK to start hating these people now?
Oh, who am I kidding? Why do I need your permission? I think I'll start right now! :-)

My Dear American Friends,
Welcome to the Wonderful World of Nanny State Socialized Medicine! As a Canadian I tried to warn you. Mark Steyn has written countless columns on the subject. But collectively, Americans didn't want to listen.
Now you will learn a very painful lesson that when you give the state the power to control your body, they will always tend to control EVERYTHING that affects your body.
The U.S.S.A. = The United Socialist States of America
Bravo, Kidz!

There was a satire that Rush Limbaugh used to do about Womb to the Tomb. We are now living it.
So I am hoping for either the Mayans to be right or Capt. Trips to come along.

Dear Andrew, add this to the reasons I will be leaving New York as soon as I retire, which is not all that far in the future.
I'll enjoy the 7 percent I won't be paying you, plus the other 7 percent of my income I won't be paying to the town and local school district for my house. It's bad when taxes exceed the mortgage payment, don't you think?

"Now you will learn a very painful lesson that when you give the state the power to control your body, they will always tend to control EVERYTHING that affects your body."
But... but... free birth control!
(And yes, that was sarcasm. Normally I wouldn't point it out, but I'm feeling even more abrupt than usual today.)
