Being Aggressively Stupid: Government Doing What Government Does Best
S.A. Miller writes in the New York Post about a new Department of Homeland Security video with advice for confronting armed would-be mass-murderers:
Is your workplace getting shot up by a crazed gunman? No problem -- just grab a pair of scissors and fight back!
That's some of the helpful advice in a new instructional video from the Department of Homeland Security that was posted on the agency's Web site just a month after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
"If you are caught out in the open and cannot conceal yourself or take cover, you might consider trying to overpower the shooter with whatever means are available," says the narrator in the video, which shows an office worker pulling scissors out of a desk drawer.
That video:
Yes, your tax dollars paid for this crap. More from the article:
Richard Feldman, president of the Independent Firearm Owners Association, said he has a better option for consideration than a pair of scissors when confronting an armed mass murderer -- a legal firearm."That's why I prefer a gun, and I usually do carry a gun when it is lawful to do so," said Feldman.
More from the article:
The video is part of the Obama administration's ongoing campaign to reduce firearm violence in the wake of the horrific mass murder last month of 20 children and six teachers in Newtown, Conn., said a Homeland Security official.
I would say it's part of the Obama administration's ongoing campaign to separate citizens and their firearms.

Active Shooter Situation = ASS.
-------------------------
People who attempt to use scissors or other on-hand items to attack gunmen are frequently called gunshot victims.
-------------------------
Let's see, I should turn off my cell phone so the shooter can't hear me, but then use it to dial 911? And communicate with 911 how? Hand signals. Semaphore.
-------------------------
According to the video, I should evacuate the building quickly and then stand right outside the door dialing 911 as people run by me.

Ooh, ooh, scissors yeah that's how Grace Kelly killed her attacker in Dial M for Murder. Happens all the time, I'm sure.
carol at January 31, 2013 12:26 PM
I'd rather just pull my gun and take them out. No hands-on stupidity required.
BunnyGirl at January 31, 2013 1:33 PM
Yes and no on the stupid. Yes, if somebody was packing a gun, firing at the active shooter might be an appropriate response, depending on the circumstances. But that assumes a gun. In a lot of places, such as office complexes on military bases, you're not likely to find anyone with a firearm. In that case, your options are pretty much limited to escaping, hiding, or if desperate, fighting back with whatever comes readily to hand.

I like how they say "call 911" and in both cases, the person is clearly texting... heh..
And how as the person sees the police, not only do hands go up, but he then quickly hits the ground with no prompting from the police.
This gets better as it goes along. Close the blinds. In a high rise? What, is the active shooter Spiderman too?
And, if you're the active shooter, just run out of the building with your hands up, just past the police. perfect
Baaaaaa. move along. Baaaaaa

I'll just keep my nail clippers handy. TSA says they're dangerous, and I trust them.

If I worked in a school, and I could be packing, I'd be packing. And more than office supplies.

Well I'm going to find a couple of gun control libs to put between me and the shooters.

I don't know, scissors are pretty dangerous. I mean do we actually know how many children are hurt each year from running with them? I am just not sure it is worth the risk. We have to think of the children first.

I wonder why this school shooting isn't big news?
Jim P. at February 1, 2013 6:12 AM
I'll tell ya why, Jim: because only one kid got shot, and he didn't die. It's not senSAYtional, ya know.
Flynne at February 1, 2013 6:34 AM
And speaking of scissors, my Indian (or would that be "Native American"?) name is: "Runs With Scissors". And I'm damn good at it, never a cut, not ONCE. Me or anybody else. It's not the SCISSORS, it's the PERSON wielding them!
o.O
Flynne at February 1, 2013 6:36 AM
They made a movie of that.
And a sequel.

Depends. Does the box hold more than ten feet of plastic wrap?

Amy, you need "like" buttons. So many good posts.
I heard a FEMA commercial the other day.
Do we really need tax dollars enriching the advertising industry?

Thanks - but are the Facebook share buttons not coming through? Asking Gregg about the "like" buttons.

I'd just add one thing to this video. An honest bit at the end. Saying, do these things just like the public did in out other success stories: Columbine, Sandy Hook, Aurora..

Amy, "Share" is visible next to "Comment" on the blog home page at the bottom of each post. It is not there when viewing the comments of the post.
You do have so many good posts, but I think what I meant to type was "So many good comments."

Amy,
I use FF with both Ghostery and AdBlock Plus installed. I don't see the share and the rest of the social networking crap. I also don't see the any of the advertising and stuff. See if gregg can set you up.
Or for that matter, I have a spare PC I could send you if needed.

Thanks - very sweet of you - but I want to see the social networking tabs and when people see ads and sometimes click on them, it pays for my site. I use a beautiful Mac Gregg got me and need to focus on getting this book and my column written!
