BTW, I think the cleric is wrong. Right here in America we seem to have an awful lot of people whose highest aspiration in life is to do whatever authority tells them to do.

So, opposing apostasy is what kept Islam to this day.

Surah Al-Ma'iddah (5:33) says:
"The punisment of those who war against Allah and His apostle is that they should be murdered or crucified."

According to Abi Kulaba's narration this verse means the apostates.

And many hadiths, not only one or two, but many, narrated by a number of Muhammad's companions state that any apostate should be killed.

Ibn 'Abbas's hadith: "Kill whomever changes his faith [from Islam]."

Ibn Mas'ud hadith: "Kill these three criminals: the adulterer, the murderer, and the apostate that leaves [our] community."

That is in addition to a big number of other narrations, by other companions, about apostasy.

I could have sworn that in most of the Western Jurisprudence that advocating murder made you an accessory before the fact. But I could be wrong.

I have been told, by Raheel Raza who represents Islam in the Toronto multi-faith arena, that the job of muslim cleric often falls to the person in the community who has no other useful skills. Some might refer to this person as the village idiot. The guy in this video seems to fit that description.
