Eek! Eek! Gays Are Getting Equal Rights!
It is very disturbing to some on the right that gays are looking a lot less like second-class citizens all of a sudden. Lawyers for the California gay marriage ban rush-rush filed documents on Saturday -- an emergency motion asking the U.S. Supreme Court to stop all those icky homos looking to commit their lives to the person they love.
From the AP on FoxNews:
Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Austin Nimocks says a three-judge 9th Circuit panel acted prematurely and unfairly when it lifted a hold on same-sex marriages it had put in place while a legal challenge to the voter-approved ban made its way through the courts.Nimocks says the Supreme Court's consideration of the case is not done yet because his clients still have 22 days to ask the justices to reconsider their decision holding that Proposition 8's backers did not have legal authority to defend the ban.
The U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for gay marriage to return to the nation's most populous state by ruling 5-4 on Wednesday that the sponsors of California's voter-approved ban on same-sex unions lacked authority to defend the measure in court.
Also Wednesday, the Supreme Court overturned the federal law that prevented the government from awarding federal benefits to same sex couples.
Sure, their case is about the legal points, but it's ultimately about their Imaginary Friend-driven belief that gays don't make suitable spouses.
(Of course, if they really wanted to get biblical, they'd be busy fighting for polygamy. Because marriage, in the Bible, used to be between a man and six women.)

It is very disturbing to some on the right that gays are looking a lot less like second-class citizens all of a sudden.
They're on the wrong side of history, along with their conservative ancestors: people who opposed abolition of slavery, people who opposed voting for women, and people who opposed interracial marriage.
Some states, like those in the Deep South, will probably never allow same-sex marriage (or it will take them decades to do so) but, in time, it will be legal in a majority of states as old-fart conservatives die off and are replaced by younger people, who, for the most part, don't get bent out of shape over who someone loves.

Yep, they're all going to die off, the intolerent old bastards, and there isnt going to be anybody to replace them except for all those Muslim immigrant kids......
That will make the country a better place....

Apparently nobody ever taught JD that Lincoln or Susan B. Anthony were Republicans. There's been liberals and conservatives on the right and wrong sides of every issue since God knows when, I'd bet.
Also Amy: one of the Supreme Court-level fighters against Prop 8 was Ted Olson, whose wife died on 9/11 and, from what I've read, is anything but a liberal atheist. You can read more about him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Olson
As for me, I think the world will be a much better place when the old-fart conservatives AND the old-fart Baby Boomer liberals both leave this planet, leaving hopefully a few newer generations of people who know how to practice politics and public policy without getting their personal panties in a bunch every time they meet anybody they disagree with.

My parents know a boring old gay couple that they absolutely love. This couple has been together for 30 years.
My parents have always been surrounded by gay men (due to the nature of their business in design) and honestly....growing up with gays I thought it was normal.
That is until I went out of my bubble. The level of hate is just crazy and if you think it's bad here go outside of the U.S.
Holy shit. Even my foreign friends, who are otherwise rational, have some kind of heated animosity. One even told me "gay long term couples are only an American thing. Even gay men eventually want a woman & kids"
I DONT think gay hate comes from the bible, I think it's just a justification for an irrational dislike.
Ppen at June 29, 2013 8:01 PM
I wonder when the first lawsuit by a business that a gay couple is trying to force to provide services for their wedding will hit the Supreme Court?
Oh, that's right. With the exception of Amy, nobody seems worried about their rights around here.
I don't think I'd have as much of a problem with gay marriage if the homosexual agenda wasn't busy trying to cram it down the throats of Christian business owners.
I made it with a hot lady pirate in the back of my car near a telephone pole. The cows in the adjacent field blushed at our antics.

And I'm fucking sick of the Christian agenda cramming their shit down my throat. Creationism, prayer in school, rewriting history....whining every 2 seconds how they are a persecuted majority.
I'm ok if Christians don't wanna marry homos, as if their ethics will hold out to the all mighty dollar.

It is utterly unconstitutional and wrong for any church to be forced to do anything against their members beliefs, such as marry atheist me (not that I'm looking to get married) or anybody they disagree with.
That said, I always have to laugh at "the homosexual agenda." Yes, there are some rabid gay rights activists, same as there are radicals on the right.
Most gay people I know just want what all of us want: To have love, to earn a living, to get the kids into a good preschool. (The boring gay parents, anyway, on that last one.) And to not pay lots more in taxes and be denied certain rights because they can't get married.

Why does this argument always come down to "cramming it down my throat"? It's such a weird analogy.
If we get down to making laws about things I don't like or that I think are bad for society, give me a call. I've got a list. Fertility drugs would be at the top of that list -- but I recognize that many arrangements between adults in America are none of my business and have nothing to do with whether I like them or not.
Kevin at June 29, 2013 10:53 PM
After much deliberation I've decided the G.K. Chesterton - conservative position ("if you mess with a piece of a chaotic system don't come whining to me if that system does something weird after a few decades", more or less) is inapplicable to the debate about same sex marriage.
In our wisdom, surpassing that of all prior generations, we have consigned the old and imperfect marital system of socially enforced complementary duties and obligations to the ash-heap of history. (Now it's time for herstory.)
There is no reason to believe that what has replaced it is capable of extending itself through future generations. Arrangements for making babies will continue to evolve rapidly until something stable emerges out of the froth. If this is too debilitating to our civilization, we will be conquered by someone. Vae victis!
Against this backdrop, any additional destabilizing effects of SSM are too insignificant to care about.

The individuals deserve due process. I was listening to the radio as a drove home from some stupid work function. They had some legal commentators on it. They said most likely SCOTUS will say so screw you. But it also may cause problems. I didn't fully get what all they were saying but the most interesting one to me was...as I understood it... based on some lower level cases, since the party has now been treated in a way not consistent with normal due process they have a "legal interest" and hence standing. Oh yeah, the other thing they were saying was that since it would be hard to unmarry people that would cause difficultly in reversing the current ruling and could be seen as an improper influence.
I have not yet read the decision or even what I feel like are good commentaries on it so I may be missing something here. But ruling they have no standing to bring suit seems like a total cop out and should only rarely ever be ruled where it is clearly the case. (e.g. if CA passed a law about licensing pets, someone who does not live in CA or own any property there could not bring suit).

One would think, that after being subject to such behaviour, the new kids on the block would refrain. Sadly, that doesn't seem to be part of human nature.
Also, I wondering how many up to now stable gay relationships will be broken up when one partner demands marriage from the other?

I suspect Gay marriage is one of those symbolic victories.
Once the possibility of marriage becomes a reality, there will be a lot of people who back away slowly, when they find out that marriage means tying your finances to someone, and not necessarily a romantic thing at all.
The grass is always greener, and same sex marriage will be no different.

Steve, please note that I said "conservative ancestors", not "Republican ancestors.
one of the Supreme Court-level fighters against Prop 8 was Ted Olson,
Olson, on Face The Nation this morning, is an intelligent and eloquent spokesman for marriage equality (contrasted with Tony Perkins, on the same program, who wants to keep gays and lesbians as second-class citizens.) Anyway, Olson said that 79% of Americans under 30 believe in marriage equality.
