Sap Check, Tunes
Is it weird that I'm person with a dark and absurdist sensibility who loves Howard Ashman and Alan Mencken ("Beauty And The Beast," etc.) and just about anything Julie Andrews has ever sung (especially everything from "The Sound of Music")?
(Gregg, on the other hand, is most comforted by what I think of as "Music To Commit Suicide By," Penderecki's "Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima," all sorts of horribly dissonant classical music, and vintage punk.)
Your uncool musical penchant, if any?

I love classical music, and apparently am the only one in my family who can stand to listen to it
lujlp at June 25, 2013 8:16 AM
John Denver, certain hits by Air Supply, and early Billy Joel. I know these are weaknesses, but there's no 12-step group...

Led Zeppelin. The third album. Endlessly. Hours and hours on end.
My girls can't stand me.

I won't admit it's uncool, but most people roll their eyes at my passion for Kate Bush. Not just because it's ooky (they don't really know that) but because it's Kate Bush.
Brian at June 25, 2013 8:56 AM
Listening to Anton Bruckner's 3rd symphony right now. I'd probably name him my favorite composer if I had to choose.
I like Broadway show tunes too.

uncool to who? most music is cool to someone...
Arguably, I tend to turn my kids on to some form, and they run with it...
I revisited the Seals and Crofts that my mom used to play in our store around 1980... it was prolly already 5-8 years old by then. I was surprised by how musical it was, because I didn't remember that part.
Prolly the uncool for most people thing would be Anime music. like most music, some is trite, and some is pretty cool... some of it only works as a vid where the music an video work together, and some stands on it's own. Pretty much like any other soundtrack to shows.
What makes it uncool for most is that it's in Japanese... so unless you are very familiar to the song, you don't know what it means.
For me, if the music is strong enough, I don't need to know the words, specifically. In that same vein... I discover a lot of music that accompanies Fan Made Videos [AMV] on You tube, because of the connection to what I am watching at a time.
Anyhow... here is on uncool fave that's not rock, I have many of those too.

Led Zeppelin uncool? Along with The Clash they are the epitome of cool!
On occasion I will break out Donna Summer's Greatest Hits. I still have a bunch of Dr Demnto tapes that I can play in the car.
Eric at June 25, 2013 10:09 AM
Ronnie Milsap, Dan Seals, Shenandoah, Travis Tritt, The Oakridge Boys, Tammy Wynette, Kathy Mattea, Patty Loveless - way uncool country music, reminds me of being a kid and being happy:)
P.S., best compliment this lady ever received was being compared looks-wise as a cross between Kate Bush and Cyndi Lauper... SWEET! Cyndi and Kate, both amazing; Cyndi may even EGOT in her lifetime!
Jess at June 25, 2013 10:18 AM
1950s and 1960s easy listening. I worship Burt Bacharach, which I suppose is uncool to some but I think he's one suave sonofabitch. Vintage Sergio Mendes, Ray Conniff, Astrud Gilberto, etc.
I also like KROQ-FM's HD2 channel, which is a replica of KROQ's 1980s glory days ... a mix of New Wave, some punk, Rodney on the ROQ, etc. with all the vintage jingles.
Kevin at June 25, 2013 10:34 AM
Gotta support Eric on the Led Zeppelin position, Flynne! And my daughters know exactly who Jimmy Page is.
Added bonus: My youngest daughter plays violin in her high school orchestra. At their spring concert, what do you think they played? "Kashmir!" A little girl with an electric fiddle covered the Robert Plant part, and it sounded just like the real thing, but without the goofy lyrics!
As far as uncool tunage goes, maybe some Journey? "Just the Same Way" is a pretty good song for the Interstate.
OldRPMDaddy (Old RPM Daddy at GMail dot com) at June 25, 2013 11:21 AM
I'm a musical theatre geek with a country music soul and a love for all things 80's. I'm pretty eclectic, actually.
Jess, I am actualy playing a Cyndi Lauper impersonator in a show I am in right now. Funny shit.
Sabrina at June 25, 2013 12:44 PM
Don't get me wrong, you guys, I don't think the mighty Zep is uncool, by any means, and my girls like them too, but I overplay that particular album while drinking copious amounts of wine, and reliving my wayward youth.
Instead of making dinner. Or doing the laundry.
Or vacuuming.
Drives my girls nuts!!

Flynne at June 25, 2013 12:52 PM
RPM Daddy, I would LOVE to hear a high school band do "Kashmir"! What a hoot!!
Flynne at June 25, 2013 12:53 PM
Ke$ha is a horrible singer and her lyrics are awful and all pretty much the same, but I like her music.
Sosij at June 25, 2013 1:38 PM
Playing a Cyndi impersonator! Duh that would be great fun, she's the best - coolest hair around and she's got a voice! And the EGOTing! Haha 30 Rock, thank you for that.
Jess at June 25, 2013 1:58 PM
Any airplay of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" is the cue for everything in my house or car to stop while all the kids and I sing along at the top of our talented lungs (and I have some talented singin' kids, let me tell ya).
Grey Ghost at June 25, 2013 2:22 PM
I have a weak spot for catchy pop/dance music that would be uncool to my friends (and hipsters) but not uncool to people who like it...songs like Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe."
I also like bluegrass music. I would think that's pretty uncool to hipsters (although some might like it.)
I had a huge crush on Julie Andrews when I was younger. I thought she had the sexiest lips.
JD at June 25, 2013 2:29 PM
Any airplay of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'"
I think Steve Perry had a wonderful voice.
A band that was a contemporary of Journey was Foreigner, and the song of theirs that I loved was "Urgent", especially due to the great sax solo by Jr. Walker (of Jr. Walker & the All-Stars, "What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)?")
JD at June 25, 2013 2:35 PM
heh, GreyGhost... that song naturally leads me to the very next track, which was "Stone in Love" prolly my favorite track on the album... it's been 30 years since I saw the girl that song goes with. How in 'ell did I get this old?

Weird Al. Tim Minchin. Disney soundtracks. If anyone ever plugged my iPod into a speaker I would immediately die.

I am a fan of Nerdcore. MC Frontalot and MC Lars are my favorites. Kirby Krackle is another band I enjoy (more comic book oriented). And I'm a huge country music fan (but who doesn't love Brad Paisley or the Zac Brown Band?).

I love show tunes. 20 years ago at a library sale I found a tape of "Camelot", with Julie Andrews and the rest of the Broadway cast. I still have it.
Also, the soundtrack for the Buffy TVS episode "Once more with Feeling".
Don't tell the cool kids.

Final Fantasy XIV music ripped from the game so I can loop it at night, orchestra music, sometimes depressing and some music from anime.
Normally I listen to whatever has a lot of bass so the above would be the only sappy stuff I listen to.

Bananarama as well.
Dusty Springfield.
April Wine.
Frank Zappa.
Eurythmics.

Jim, I loved the first three albums by The Outlaws. I didn't like them that much after Henry Paul left.
KateC, I loved that Rockpile album and everything that Nick Lowe has done. I've been going to the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco for the past three years. Nick Lowe was there with a band three years ago and solo last year. Both times his performance was my favorite of the weekend. When I saw him last year, I was standing next to a bunch of kids in their twenties who had never heard of him. After the show, I asked them what they thought and they all said that he blew them away.
