Juror B29 Didn't Say Zimmerman "Got Away With Murder"
Saletan writes on Slate:
1. The phrase "got away with murder" was put in her mouth. Nightline shows ABC interviewer Robin Roberts asking Maddy: "Some people have said, 'George Zimmerman got away with murder. How do you respond to those people who say that?' " Maddy appears to reply promptly and confidently: "George Zimmerman got away with murder. But you can't get away from God." But that's not quite how the exchange happened. In the unedited video, Roberts' question is longer, with words that have been trimmed from the Nightline version, and Maddy pauses twice, for several seconds, as she struggles to answer it. "... George Zimmerman ... That's--George Zimmerman got away with murder. But you can't get away from God."You have to watch her, not just read her words, to pick up her meaning. As she struggles to answer, she looks as though she's trying to reconcile the sentiment that's been quoted to her--that Zimmerman "got away with murder"--with her own perspective. So she repeats the quote and adds words of her own, to convey what she thinks: that there's a justice higher than the law, which Zimmerman will have to face. She thinks he's morally culpable, not legally guilty.
Saletan added:
2. She stands by the verdict. ABC's online story about the interview ends with Maddy asking, "Did I go the right way? Did I go the wrong way?" But that's not the whole quote. In the unedited video, she continues: "I know I went the right way, because by the law and the way it was followed is the way I went. But if I would have used my heart, I probably would have [gone for] a hung jury." In another clip, she draws the same distinction: "I stand by the decision because of the law. If I stand by the decision because of my heart, he would have been guilty." At one point, she says that "the evidence shows he's guilty." Roberts presses her: "He's guilty of?" Maddy answers: "Killing Trayvon Martin. But as the law was read to me, if you have no proof that he killed him intentionally, you can't say he's guilty." That's the distinction she's trying to draw here: Killing is one thing. Murder or manslaughter is another.3. She thinks the case should never have gone to trial. According to ABC News, when Roberts asked "whether the case should have gone to trial," Maddy answered, "I don't think so. ... I felt like this was a publicity stunt."

As usual, brilliant analysis Amy. Media is prostletyzing here. I also noted that Roberts asked here if she felt bullied - a leading, presumptuous question, and an ironic one, given that her fellow jurors were women.

What?! You mean a news program edited and altered an interview to sell a story?! I am shocked I tell you. SHOCKED!

One race leader, it was either sharpton or rangel, I can't remember which one said it, stated that if it was a black man that killed a white man there would have been a conviction. I honestly don't know. But the point they made goes both ways...
I'm fairly certain that if a white man was on too of a black man pounding his head into cement, civil rights leaders would be defending the black. I base this on history.... their support of OJ Simpson despite a far more damning case against him than Zimmerman, the Jena six who were supported by civil rights leaders and given standing ovations on BET after the 6 on 1 beating of a white nearly to death.
My uncle was beaten to death in 2010. A monster broke into his apartment the middle of the night and smashed his head so bad he couldn't be made presentable for the funeral. I do not care that my uncle was white and his killer was black, and I sure as hell would never blame an entire race over it.
I wonder if Jesse Jackson would have appeared with OJ, bible in hand, supporting him against a mountain of evidence if he would have been white and Nicole would have been black.

Very good catch. Thanks.

the older black gunman who provoked an unarmed 17-year old white boy was acquitted.

I really am sick of this story, to be honest. Members of the media, give it up! You lost!
You cannot try George Zimmerman again.

I don't know about anybody else, but I think it takes a special lack of awareness that you don't know that Sanford, FL has become the focus of every race baiter; every CCW holder; the NRA; and every "equal rights" organization in the United States.
She fought to the end? All sixteen hours until she finally came to the conclusion that "she thinks the case should never have gone to trial"? [Ref point 3]
I think that what has happened is that she did the right thing in the jury room and pretty much remembers it. But she is now talking to friends and they are saying "How could you have done that?" so she is questioning herself.
Sort of like my sister. I asked if she had read the timeline I sent her her? Her response was "I won't read it. He's guilty by getting out of his truck." The only way I could take that was "Don't confuse me with the facts."

Oh Jesus Christ. Seriously, how do they even get away with calling themselves news anymore. I'm glad you wrote this, Amy, because all I had seen was the edited version and it certainly made her seem a very ignorant drudge. I feel a bit better now. But she did her duty in the jury room, so that's all that really matters in the end. Unfortunately, since the news cut was all most people will see, a lot of people are going to go with their hearts if they get called. She-and the newspeople-have done irreparable harm to justice in this country.

Jim P., my stepmother said the same thing: he was told not to get out of the truck, and for her the whole case hinged on that.
Public safety dispatchers (I am one) do not issue legally binding orders over the phone. Zimmerman was under no legal obligation to follow the direction to stay in his truck.
Julie at July 26, 2013 10:42 PM
I agree that Zimmerman didn't make all the best moves, but I can't find him out of line with anything I might have done.
It bothers me that she refuses to learn. I bet the same with you. I'm tempted to drive her to the ground the next time I see her and ask what she would do now?

"It bothers me that she refuses to learn. I bet the same with you."
Incredibly frustrating, yes. To have access to information and willfully close oneself off to it boggles my mind.
Happily, in my instance my stepmother had simply not followed the case and had only a smattering of details. Once she had a better grasp of the facts, reason prevailed and I was spared an aneurysm.

The media are in a race with the Congress to a zero percent approval rating, and closing fast. There is no reason to tolerate those who deliberately deceive.

Never talk to cops without an attorney; and NEVER talk to the news media. period.
Both will twist YOUR words to fit THEIR agenda.

Ran across this video. I think it's a pretty good indictment of the media.
Jim P. at July 27, 2013 8:37 PM
You know that if white people fully realized how much black on white crime there actually is, lynching would come back in style. The media covers up black on white crime. How many of you heard about the two black teenagers who, while trying to rob a poor white women, shot her baby in the face because she didn't have any money? How about the black man who shot a white teenager that he confronted? I still don't understand why the travon shooting is news. Of course it might help if they showed him at 17 instead of constantly showing his 12 year old picture. This case is a stinking load of crap.
Assholio at July 27, 2013 11:02 PM
Assholio: "The media covers up black on white crime."
Don't forget the murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom. Two young white folks savagely tortured and murdered by 5 black thugs.
(check out wikipedia for the details - it is rather disturbing to think of the hell that those two suffered before being killed. Even "jail house justice" would be too kind for their killers)
The national news media didn't report this much either. I guess they didn't want to cause us white folks to riot!
