Oh, what the heck, one more. Our Gracious Hostess has brought us down this road before, but let's hear it one more time, just to make it stick: If you aren't sure of the answer, don't ask the question!
Note, the video at the link opens automatically, so if you're at work, you might want to turn the volume down.
And yes, the Telegraph site is a nice place for daily tidbits.

I normally enjoy this guy, but this time he spreads disinformation, and for that, I'd like to go find him and punch him in the head.
At 6:47, while explaining the difference between "affect" and "effect," he says, "Some people think that you can 'effect' as a verb as well, but those people are wrong."
No, he's wrong. "Effect" while most commonly used as a noun, can be used as a verb. "To effect" means "to bring about." If I "effect a change," that means I caused a change. There was no change taking place, but I made the change happen.
However, if I am "affecting a change," that means that the change is already taking place and that I am influencing it some way. I did not bring it about, but I am exerting some control over it.
"Effect" as a verb is certainly less common. However, it is still verb.
Our friends the British bring us a little upper-class trolling and bottom-spanking!
