Every time I see @MileyCyrus slap that black woman's butt, I think about the way that enslaved blacks were whipped for white entertainment.
See video #6.
Some commentary on this without the mouth foaming (from Nolan Feeney in The Atlantic).

Oh my, it's all just so,so...tacky. I'm getting the vapors just thinking about it. Yawn.

I was going to try to say something about Miss Cyrus' act, but I outside of the clip at the Atlantic site, I didn't watch it. And I won't. First, I'm sure I'm not the intended audience. Second, the "ick" factor's just a little too high, like when a former child star does a nude scene. I really don't want to look.
That said, I guess somebody's got to write the sort of baloney Nolan Feeney did, but it's hard to take his attempt at scholarliness seriously. His subject matter is no more intellectual than the Three Stooges, and while he fears the joke's on Miley (and sadly, it may be), I tend to think it might really be on him.

Loved this bit from the WaPo, from Clinton Yates:

So, not using blacks in your act is racist and using them as racist. And the only thing racist is...not having an act at all?

Step right up, folks, step right up.
See the amazing pop-slut du jour.
She struts, she gyrates, she crawls on her belly like a reptile.
Step right up.
And while I'm sneering--Madonna, get rid of that god-awful grill! Jeezus Keerist on the half-shell, it's over, woman! You and Prince were guilty pleasures of mine for years, but it's over. Put the bullet bra down, honey. It's okay.

"Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends..." So if that Miley act wasn't one of the most pathetic "look at meeeeeee!" things I've ever seen. It's no more worth commenting on than the 4-year-old who runs naked through the adult's party. Send her to her room and let that be it. It has no deeper meaning. Hell, it barely has a shallow meaning.

I was shocked, SHOCKED to hear that MTV was being so crass and vulgar and disgusting. I mean, up until last night, MTV was where I went to find examples of good taste and breeding.
Well, I guess they still give examples of breeding...
Excuse me, it is hard to type while I fan myself and reach for my smelling salts, so I'm going to end this message now.
NicoleK at August 27, 2013 10:52 AM
It was gross, but Miley showed she has huge ovaries and/or has no concept of boundaries.
DaveG at August 27, 2013 11:36 AM
Okay, we got vapors, fans and smelling salts. I'm past ready for my restorative mint julep now.
Oh, and somebody peel me a grape.
Pricklypear at August 27, 2013 12:09 PM
meanwhile, somehow... the world still spins.
SwissArmyD at August 27, 2013 12:27 PM
Doesn't it just do your heart good to see Mylie Cyrus make the transition from wholesome, charming young lady to classless, vulgar trull?
Patrick at August 27, 2013 1:12 PM
Attention is hard to get these days. So is getting me to care.
MarkD at August 27, 2013 1:41 PM
I was accused of sexism on my Facebook wall, because I called Mylie a "slut" but somehow spared Robin Thicke.
It was not sexism. It was the fact that I turned it off, because I sufficiently grossed out, and didn't see Robin Thicke's part in it. I'll take everyone's word for it that he was every bit as trashy as she was.
But if it makes anyone feel better to hear me go off on a male performer, fair enough.
Adam Lambert is a crude, disgusting, vulgar, trashy pig. Simulating oral sex on stage is way beyond bad taste.
Better?
Patrick at August 27, 2013 2:09 PM
I'm still trying to figure out how that thing she was doing with her tongue was supposed to be in any way sexy. It was creepy, at best.
Daghain at August 27, 2013 6:41 PM
I get so tired of hearing depictions of sexuality automatically branded as trashy.
That being said, Chickenbutt 2013 was a travesty.
Not because Miley was provocative or because she was scantily clad or made a shocking performance, but because she TRIED to do all of these things and wound up doing them very, very badly. I was embarrassed for her.
Regardless, however, here we are: all talking about her.
I bet she's really bashful all the way to the bank.
ValiantBlue at August 27, 2013 7:47 PM
We see things through our own lens. While the author saw Miley's slap as representing white people whipping blacks for entertainment, my thought was that she was showing appreciation for the African American woman's body and sexuality. I personally adore how different bodies are viewed as sexy. I remember my mother urging me, at 5'6" and 112 lbs. to lose weight. My butt was too big and it made me look "trashy."
Jen at August 27, 2013 8:04 PM
I think she was trying to imitate the facial expression of the cartoon character on her...uh, blouse...or whatever that thing was that she was wearing.
ValiantBlue, there is bawdry, then there is raunchiness, and then there's smut.
Smut lacks subtlety, humor, innuendo or wit. I prefer bawdy or raunchy humor. Smut is just inyoface vulgarity. Never cared for it. Never will.
This was smut.
As for her bashfulness all the way to the bank, I have a feeling she won't be doing it too much longer. Aside from giving a tasteless performance, she appears to have inherited her father's dancing skills. Remember Billy Ray's rather stiff performances on DWTS to lackluster reviews.

Apparently a black student at UT had a water balloon filled with bleach thrown at him yesterday from a balcony. He was on tv talking about how humiliating it was for him, as a minority student at UT. Um, pretty sure NO ONE would feel great about that happening. Why does it have to be about your skin color? Were the perps wearing white robes and shouting White Power? No? Then let's stop with the knee-jerk reflex that anything that happens to a black person happens because they are black.

"Not because Miley was provocative or because she was scantily clad or made a shocking performance, but because she TRIED to do all of these things and wound up doing them very, very badly. I was embarrassed for her."
That's the thing. It wasn't the slightest bit provocative. It was a spoiled-brat teenager screaming for attention.

I get so tired of hearing depictions of sexuality automatically branded as trashy.
I get so tired of hearing depictions of trash automatically branded as mere sexuality, myself.
