Can anybody please explain why anybody outside of Toronto has the slightest interest in their substance-abusing train wreck of a mayor?

Sr. Editor: The public is fascinated with Obama lying. We have to take the pressure off of him.
Reporter: That mayor in Canada is really bad. Let's show how bad a politician can be. He is a drug and alcohol addict, and he is saying that he isn't
Sr. Editor: Yeah. The public should know how good they have it with Obama.

Don't really care but has shut up some hard left Canadians I know who used to talk shit about US politicians, laws and practices. But pretty much a distraction.

Well, it is easier to talk about the mayor of a faraway city than it is to wonder about the police department of a certain town in New Mexico whose cops see perfectly fit to detain somebody at a traffic stop, haul him to a hospital or two and have him undergo repeated enemas and a colonoscopy, just because they saw him clenching his butt-cheeks in a way that, to them, suggested he was muling drugs.
According to the man's lawyer, no drugs were found, by the way.
For all we know, the guy might have simply been trying not to take a shit before he arrived at his house.

'cause it's nice to know we're not the only country with a major city that has a crack-smoking, bat shit crazy mayor.
Of course, thanks to Marion Barry, we're not allowed to mock the Canadians on this one.

I have no idea.

Because the dude is comedy gold. He looks like Chris Farley on a bad day, has some of the best politician lines since "bitch set me up" and best of all, is someone else's problem.
Astra at November 19, 2013 6:01 AM
He pulled a Clinton. This scandal has been brewing for months. It has been all over the Canadian press, and he has consistently denied any allegations of drug and alcohol abuse.
That, and the man is a train wreck who can't keep his mouth shut.
I personally, can't wait for the embarrassment to be booted out of office. Toronto city council has already stripped him of his powers, now he is nothing more than a sad figure head, and the longer he refuses to leave office, the worse it gets.
If you ask him, however, he's a completely changed man in less than two weeks. With that success, maybe he should run a rehab clinic.

And actually, he is a dead ringer for Chris Farley.

That last paragraph, btw, is an out and out lie on his part.
Again.
Shocked.

So, no one outside of Toronto should have any interest whatsoever in the mayor of that city?
I'll keep that in mind the next time you post about the mayor of New York City. It might by the U.S.'s largest city, just as Toronto is Canada's largest, but you don't live in New York any more, so you shouldn't have the slightest interest in what goes on there.
Patrick at November 19, 2013 6:36 AM
Amy, I think it is "news" for a few reasons, as some have already stated:
1: He is the mayor of Canada's largest city - that alone makes it news.
2: It IS comedy gold, and why yes, he does look and act like a Chris Farley sketch (Thanks for that comparison Astra!)
3: He has REFUSED to step down - I think had he stepped down the story would have stopped. But, since he is fighting to stay on that does make it news.
I do find it interesting that the city council has stripped him of all power; and in this case I agree with them doing so. (I don't know why they don't/can't impeach him) But, what if the city council stripped the mayor of power because they don't like his policies, not his drug use? Would we still be hearing of this news? Or would it be a story not covered? (I think I know the answer to that; a liberal mayor stripped of his power would be daily news, a conservative mayor wouldn't be covered at all)

You might be right. This story isn't get a lot of national press attention:
http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/anne-arundel/annapolis/bs-md-annapolis-mayor-20131110,0,1300185.story
The decision by the Democrat-dominated Annapolis city council to switch to a council-manager form of city government just happens to coincide with the election of the city's first Republican mayor since 1997.

I think it's also because we, as Americans, are constantly reminded (read: mocked and compared to) of how Canada always has thier shit together and it's makes us feel smug to see that that isn't always true.

"I think it's also because we, as Americans, are constantly reminded (read: mocked and compared to) of how Canada always has their shit together and it's makes us feel smug to see that that isn't always true."
Not by us. You guys poke fun at us faster and more frequently, and with less to go on.
A little defensive are we, Sab?
wtf at November 19, 2013 10:29 AM
WTF,
Actually, it's other Americans who often do the mocking more than anything. Prolly shoulda clarified...
And, no matter where it's coming from, our American government officials are pretty much seen as screw up's these days. When I see a story like this, it makes me wanna go, "See! We aren't the only ones with screw up's in government! They're all over!"
Sabrina at November 19, 2013 10:42 AM
"See! We aren't the only ones with screw up's in government! They're all over!"
I think it's more that, in order to be in government, you must be a born liar with an IQ less than your shoe size.
Being willing to break the law is also a requirement.
If you want a Canadian screw up, google Justin Trudeau.
I swear to God, if that idiot gets into the PM's office, I'm revoking my citizenship and making a run for the border!
He did the exact same thing as Ford, except he's a liberal, so that makes it all OK! Also, he's cute but stupid so makes a perfect pawn for all liberal cronies.
