Crazythink On Sex: Turning Psychological Problems Into A Career In Feminist Academia
I discovered this rad-fem crazy, Sheila Jeffreys, when we rented a French feminist's loft. One of her nutbag books was on the shelf -- I think, equating asparagus to rape!
I quoted her ridiculousness in an old column:
"When a woman reaches orgasm with a man, she is only collaborating with the patriarchal system, eroticizing her own oppression."
Here's a blog post of hers. (Note: PIV = Penis In Vagina.)
Just to recall a basic fact: Intercourse/PIV is always rape, plain and simple. This is a developed recap from what I've been saying in various comments here and there in the last two years or so. as a radfem I've always said PIV is rape and I remember being disappointed to discover that so few radical feminists stated it clearly. How can you possibly see it otherwise? Intercourse is the very means through which men oppress us, from which we are not allowed to escape, yet some instances of or PIV and intercourse may be chosen and free? That makes no sense at all.
First, well intercourse is NEVER sex for women. Only men experience rape as sexual and define it as such. Sex for men is the unilateral penetration of their penis into a woman (or anything else replacing and symbolising the female orifice) whether she thinks she wants it or not - which is the definition of rape: that he will to do it anyway and that he uses her and treats her as a receptacle, in all circumstances - it makes no difference to him experiencing it as sexual. That is, at the very least, men use women as useful objects and instruments for penetration, and women are dehumanised by this act. It is an act of violence.
As FCM pointed out some time ago, intercourse is inherently harmful to women and intentionally so, because it causes pregnancy in women. The purpose of men enforcing intercourse regularly (as in, more than once a month) onto women is because it's the surest way to cause pregnancy and force childbearing against our will, and thereby gain control over our reproductive powers. There is no way to eliminate the pregnancy risk entirely off PIV and the mitigating and harm-reduction practices such as contraception and abortion are inherently harmful, too. Reproductive harms of PIV range from pregnancy to abortion, having to take invasive, or toxic contraception, giving birth, forced child bearing and rearing and all the complications that go with them which may lead up to severe physical and emotional damage, disability, destitution, illness, or death (See factcheckme.wordpress.com for her work on the reproductive harms of PIV, click on the "intercourse series" page or "PIV" in the search bar). If we compare this to even the crappiest online definition of violence: "behaviour involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something". Bingo. It fits: Pregnancy = may hurt, damage or kill. Intercourse = a man using his physical force to penetrate a woman. Intention / purpose of the act of intercourse = to cause pregnancy. PIV is therefore intentional harm / violence. Intentional sexual harm of a man against a woman through penile penetration = RAPE.
Here's somebody who clearly has psychological problems -- serious ones -- who has turned them into a career. That's quite an accomplishment.

Great opening line.
I read it, recognized what the piece was going to say, and quit reading any further.
Wonderfully useful structure.

"That's quite an accomplishment."
No, that's proof we live in a messed up world.
Joe J at January 2, 2014 10:43 PM
best thing to say to all that is:
"Congratulations! You win The Darwin Award.
Thanks very much for removing yourself from the gene pool, have a nice day."
SwissArmyD at January 3, 2014 12:19 AM
I actually clicked through to the article. She has a whole coterie of like-minded people on her blog. I suppose that shouldn't be surprising - blogs attract people who agree with the authors.
Nonetheless, I find it really bizarre that there are women who consider consensual intercourse to be rape. By the same reasoning, consensual giving is theft, wrestling or martial arts practice is assault, having visitors over is kidnapping.
a_random_guy at January 3, 2014 1:04 AM
What if you finger yourself?
Ppen at January 3, 2014 2:03 AM
The easiest thing to say to Sheila Jeffreys would be, "well, keep your pants on, then." But I suppose that wouldn't help her make everyone else as angry and miserable as she is.
Old RPM Daddy (OldRPMDaddy at GMail dot com) at January 3, 2014 4:06 AM
"What if you finger yourself?"
Actually she has an answer for that... you only finger yourself because you have internalized your rape. You are not capable of giving yourself consent to finger yourself.
Sadly, this is not a fringe belief among feminists. It's an idea that has at least been close to the mainstream of feminism since the 1960s.
Cousin Dave at January 3, 2014 6:18 AM
I wonder what she would do if she read Penthouse Letters where women say they have seduced men and the orgasms are the best they have ever had.
She would probably have a stroke.
What a stupid twit.
Jim P. at January 3, 2014 6:36 AM
Clearly she hasn't gotten a good lay in a lonnng time so her goods have shrivelled all up and now she has turned into a witch or possible a religious zealot that will promote abstinence.

So, according to her, there is basically no such thing as consensual sex between a man and a woman...It's rape. Plain and clear.
How does she explain women who are TRYING to get pregnant, like myself? Is my husband raping me? Did he FORCE me by some magic mind trick to stop taking my birth control pills?
Is it only rape when it's a man and woman?
What about homosexual male intercourse? Is that rape? Can a woman rape another woman with a strap on?
Sabrina at January 3, 2014 7:08 AM
Sheila Jeffreys is a lunatic. Plain and simple. She needs a good lay.
Oh and brian? I'm a witch, and I LOVE sex. So, please, retract that "now she has turned into a witch" remark, because nothing could be further from the truth. Most of the witches I know are as horny as me, if not hornier!
Flynne at January 3, 2014 7:15 AM
She obviously needs to take extreme measures against rape, as **she** sees it.
I was going to suggest she lube a dildo with super-glue, but watching a recent viral video involving an ant's nest and molten aluminum. . . (evil grin)
Keith Glass at January 3, 2014 7:26 AM

The Force is strong with your husband. Those are not the birth control pills you're looking for.
Wut?
Back to the subject matter: if I wanted to oppress women, I'd put them in irons. Or dress them in burka. *shrugs*
Also: it hurt my head to read much of that pablum. I think I may have lost some brain function. Can we sue our bloghostess for exposing us to weapons grade idiocy?

Over and over again we see people hypnotizing themselves with the strangest beliefs. She's got a strong story line and she's obviously worked out a lot of the details. It's a pity that she couldn't use her creativity for something else.
Canvasback at January 3, 2014 8:54 AM
Amy,
You seem to be saying that Jeffreys wrote the blog post, but that doesn't seem accurate. Googling the first sentence and Jeffreys doesn't turn up much. And elsewhere, "witchwind" cites Jeffreys in her blog.

Sadly, doing this seems to be a growth industry.
Oh, and Flynne; where are all da horny witches?

"Over and over again we see people hypnotizing themselves with the strangest beliefs. "
It does remind me of certain vegetarians I knew when I lived in south Florida, who were using (militant) vegetarianism to rationalize their eating disorders. They were usually the ones who were strident about imposing a vegetarian lifestyle on everyone.
Cousin Dave at January 3, 2014 9:56 AM
So if a single woman is handy with the dildo vibrator, she's raping herself???
mpetrie98 at January 3, 2014 11:06 AM
So, I guess when a panting woman screams at her boyfriend, "TAKE ME NOW!", she's actually "asking for it?"
mpetrie98 at January 3, 2014 11:07 AM
No, that would be eroticizing her own oppression. She can't enjoy PIV for how it makes her feel good.
Jim P. at January 3, 2014 11:12 AM
This is simply the endgame of the belief that all gender differences are creations of society rather than driven by biology. Once you've truly convinced yourself that the only reason gendered anything exists is because some cabal of patriarchal jerks consciously made it so, it's not that big a leap the essential act of sexual reproduction is inherently an imposition by the penetrator on the penetrated.
Strangely, I wager this woman would mock creationists for rejecting Darwinian evolution.
Oberon at January 3, 2014 11:14 AM
So if two committed lesbians are doing 69, are they TONGUE-RAPING EACH OTHER???
mpetrie98 at January 3, 2014 11:15 AM
Oh, wait, scratch that last one, since it doesn't involve a man.

But wait! You don't know The Truth!!!!1111!!! Here is The Truth: All human beings are women. Men are an alien species that invaded Earth about 2000 years ago. Prior to that, all human beings (who were all women, and probably Women Of Color at that) lived in a state of permanant peace and luxury. How reproduction worked during the pre-men era is left as an exercise to the reader.
Cousin Dave at January 3, 2014 12:22 PM
And here's the really funny thing: Once you sort through all the rhetoric and all of the pseudo-scientific yapping about muscle conformance and so forth, the fundemental complaint about PIV is that the male penis is just TOO DAMN BIG. But a baby isn't... go figure.
Cousin Dave at January 3, 2014 12:24 PM

It'd be so easy to dismiss people like Jeffreys if they were just random oddball bloggers. The disturbing thing about her views is that they're so common in feminist academia and politics.
Jeffreys isn't an isolated crazy, she's just one of the more prominent members of a surprisingly influential movement. What's most amazing to me is that they're respected by so many academics outside of their ideology -- including self proclaimed "sceptics" who should know better -- when in a sane world they'd all be laughingstocks.
This is someone who's spent the last two decades teaching in a fairly prestigious university. She has various articles published in mainstream newspapers and journals. She's on the board of a major international NGO, and in that capacity has travelled the world lecturing on violence against women (which includes wearing make-up and high heels), and is a consultant with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. Her deranged views have influenced policy in Australia, Britain, and the EU.
It's like a bad joke and parody of feminism that's somehow been taken seriously.
DK at January 3, 2014 1:39 PM
There is a highly scientific psych/medical term for her kind of thinking--"That women is simply double bat shit crazy."
(I think I read it in a psyc magazine.)
Jay at January 3, 2014 1:45 PM
Google a picture of Sheila Jeffreys. The woman is hideous looking and no man would want to touch her anyway. With that being said, I believe she in turn developed hatred towards men and rejected them for rejecting her. The woman is triple bat-shit crazy.
Her blog makes no sense. PIV is cultural? Seriously? Does she think a male animal is raping a female animal as well?
Dragonslayer666 at January 3, 2014 2:32 PM
Sorry, am I supposed to read beyond the first couple of sentences?
What the hell's wrong w/ppl?
Keep up the great work Amy!
adambein at January 3, 2014 2:40 PM
What disappoints me most is how few mainstream feminists recognize (or at least speak out about) how profoundly damaging this line of thinking is. The demonization here of male sexuality is obvious, but think of how awful it would be for young women to internalize this narrative. If this woman is to be believed, any women experiencing normal sexual urges and a healthy sex life should feel shame an guilt at having these feelings. It's simple Puritanism, wrapped in a postmodern facade.
While it is blatant in this case, the sex negativity slips into more moderate discussions of "rape culture" as well. By broadening the definition of rape to include consensual (if later regretted or if tipsy) encounters, this rhetoric seeks to strip women of their sexual agency. Rather than empowerment, it gives women the message that they are always helpless victims at the mercy of males. How anyone believes this to be a positive message for women is beyond me.

Three nuns were sitting on a park bench when a man stopped and flashed them. The first nun had a stroke. The second nun had a stroke. The third one couldn't reach.
Thanks for reminding me, Jim P.!

Apparently quite a hot seller on Amazon.
Gog_Magog_Carpet_Reclaimers at January 3, 2014 9:51 PM
Is this woman advocating celibacy and therefore the end of humanity? I must admit the term "Radical Feminist" is new to me, i'm not sure when being part of a "Radical" group became a positive thing in people eyes but thats another issue. In my opinion a radical group in most cases wants a bad situation turned on its head which is not the answer, equality is the answer. I can only presume this ridiculous blog post are the product of a dangerously unhinged, albeit literate woman has been seriously mistreated by men in her early life, or, if she realized she is a lesbian and never had and attraction and/or sexual experience with a man she has no reference and blind hate for males which should be be celebrated.
So my advice to Sheila Jeffreys is two fold:
1. You need to get laid
2. Unfortunately, I googled your picture, and it seems you have no chance of a PIV situation unless the blind society has a swingers party. You crazy dike.
