For those unfamiliar with him, the author (Jerry Pournelle) is an award-winning science fiction writer, author of over a dozen books of his own and more than 20 in collaboration with others.

Sadly, lots of people divorce when they get older. I think those are some of the saddest divorces of all. -- jerry at January 31, 2014 11:21 AM
I actually know of many older couples that have been married by a church, but have never filed the paperwork with the legal authorities. And the church blesses the arrangement.
The reason is that she, as a widow, is getting the max of $2,642. Her new husband would change that to a $1700 per month.
This is essentially the same legal argument about recognizing a gay marriage. The state/fed gets zero on the inheritance between legal marriages because the spouse owns the property by default. But if the marriage isn't recognized the death taxes kick in on the house/property to the gay partner.
But my big question is "Do you see why the fed or state should have a limited role in persomal relations?"

I like Jerry Pournelle quite a bit but I think his speculation is a pretty big stretch.
