The Government Is A Pearl-Clutching Bully
Elizabeth Nolan Brown writes at reason about the disgusting bank account terminations experienced by adult film performers recently, and notes that the DOJ may have had something to do with it:
Under "Operation Choke Point," the DOJ and its allies are going after legal but subjectively undesirable business ventures by pressuing banks to terminate their bank accounts or refuse their business. The very premise is clearly chilling--the DOJ is coercing private businesses in an attempt to centrally engineer the American marketplace based on it's own politically biased moral judgements. Targeted business categories so far have included payday lenders, ammunition sales, dating services, purveyors of drug paraphernalia, and online gambling sites."Operation Chokepoint is flooding payments companies that provide processing service to those industries with subpoenas, civil investigative demands, and other burdensome and costly legal demands," wrote Jason Oxman, CEO of the Electronic Transactions Association, at The Hill.
Absolutely disgusting.

Bank America has been closing down accounts of those with legitimate firearms businesses for some time now.
If this gets people and companies back in the frame of mind to only do business with local banks and credit unions, it might be a good thing.
Unintended consequences and all that....

*sigh*
I bank with Chase. I have for years. It's conveniant, and because I travel between counties for gigs a lot, I liked being able to access my account from any branch in the tri-county area...
I was even considering moving my theatre companies business account there.... Not anymore.
I cannot idly standby on this one. I'm not a porn lover, but it's a legitimate business and I take issue with this. I work in the arts myself. Art is subjective. What's next? They decide the shows we do aren't "morally acceptable" and we are forced out too? I'll be taking my business elsewhere...

meh, this 'll run them into the cash economy... where it's hard to trace anything, and much harder to prove who needs to pay taxes.

"meh, this 'll run them into the cash economy"
Thus turning them into tax cheats, a crime for which they may be imprisoned at a for-profit penal institution, a growth industry that is favored by this government.

When will we reach the tipping point?
I am still trying to digest what happened recently when in the same week I read of the government 1. Coming down hard on a worker who didn't pay for a soda refill at the VA cafeteria, and 2. Supporting worker who was fired for not paying for a bag of potato chips she ate while cashiering at the store where she worked.
They both lost their jobs.

A government that maintains a secret no-fly list has proven it can, and will, do just about anything, to anybody.

It's clear that this administration defines the law and the term corruption however it sees fit in the moment. It's clear that we have started running down a path towards the government practices for which we used to overthrow governments in years past....

If this is accurate; EVERYONE should be upset that our government is making such moral judgments about who is "good" or "bad."
Sooner or later we will all end up on someone in government's "bad" list.

Maybe all freedom-loving people who run businesses should start refusing to serve federal badge thugs.

This is how liberty dies.

"Art is subjective. What's next? "
Exactly. A central tenant in Totalitarianism 101 is that the only legitimate purpose of art is to propagandize on behalf of the Party. All other art is bourgeois and must be suppressed. And the way this process starts is to being with art that most people find repugnant, and then ratchet up from there.

"begin", not "being", sigh.
