All The Money In The World Can't Buy You A Science-Based Diet
Julianne Moore told SHAPE magazine:
"I still battle with my deeply boring diet of, essentially, yogurt and breakfast cereal and granola bars. I hate dieting. I hate having to do it to be the 'right' size. I'm hungry all the time. I think I'm a slender person, but the industry apparently doesn't. All actresses are hungry all the time, I think."
Poor woman. Eating exactly wrong to be healthy, thin, and enjoy life. And cramming herself with sugar in all of those things. Terrible stuff.
I actually have a macro about this (because I got sick of rewriting this from scratch), which I'll paste in here:
Per Gary Taubes' "Good Calories, Bad Calories" and "Why We Get Fat," it is carbohydrates -- sugar, flour, starchy vegetables like potatoes, apple juice -- that cause the insulin secretion that puts on fat.
I wake up to three strips of (greasy!) bacon, later have crispy kale I've cooked in bacon grease, and later have an omelette made in Kerrygold butter with a bit of paté and shredded cheese. It's fantastic. Oh, and I drink break-a-tooth black coffee with 1/3 cup foamed organic half 'n' half per cup. Yummm! And I'm super healthy and don't gain weight -- even if I don't exercise (which I do, because it's important beyond being slim).
This week -- Sunday, May 11, 7-8 pm Pacific -- I'll have Nina Teicholz on my radio show talking about her brand new book, The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet.
Excellent book -- I'm finishing it now.

You were doing fine until the coffee: coffee is meant to be drunk black. If you must add something, Irish Whiskey or Sambucca are acceptable, but obviously not for breakfast.

You mentioned Kerrygold butter. Oh HELLS yeah! I tried that a while back and I'll nevr use any other butter unless it's in some recipe where I don't want to use an entire stick o' Kerrygold. Best flavored butter in creation.

You are right, BlogDog. I go through bars and bars and bars of it. They now have it at Trader Joe's, where we get a lot of our food. Most of it, in fact.

@"coffee is meant to be drunk black"
Whenceforth was this rule ordained, is it inscribed in the DNA of the 'Coffee arabica' plant?

What do you mean? You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning. ;-P
Anyway, yogurt, cereal, and breakfast bars - argh! The company I used to work for had a cafeteria, and it never failed - the heavy people were getting cereal and yogurt for breakfast, while the fit ones were loading up on eggs. I figured this out even before the Taubes book came out, just by counting the calories.
One large bagel and two tablespoons of lite cream cheese = 406 calories, and you're hungry again after an hour or less.
Three large eggs and three medium slices of bacon = 344 calories, and you're fine for several hours.
Even without knowing anything about the insulin production stuff, or the ketosis stuff, it was pretty obvious which option was better.

I was amazed by something Teicholz mentions in her book -- my discovery that going to Paris for a week and eating foie gras and fatty meat made me lose weight.

Truth be told, genetics plays into things as well. The bacon'n'butter regime won't work for everyone.
I worked my ass off to drop 30# this year, including limiting carbs, going with more fresh veg + proteins. Now, I find I can eat mostly anything (limiting portions and total daily intake to reasonable amounts)and hold my current weight for the last 60 days with no fear. It also helps that I have a night job that is very active compared to the day job on my ass at a PC. Yogurt is good post-workout to give your muscles something to burn. If you aren't working out first, then stay away from the yogurt.
After three weekends beating myself up for a second beer, and daily weigh-ins, I am good to go.

Can't do bacon or eggs, so I'm trying to find some breakfast alternatives that have enough fat.
Anyone have any good suggestions?

I love Kerrygold butter, but it's really expensive here, $9 or more a pound. A grocery store near me sells tubs of Amish butter by the pound. It's very similar in taste to the Kerrygold, comes from grass fed milk. It's $5 a pound so I've been buying that as an alternative.
I used to be very slim and at the time my diet consisted of three maple sausage links and a glass of milk for breakfast. lunch was a chef salad with baby spinach, cucumber, a hardboiled egg, a few grape tomatoes, two slices of cheddar cut up, some ham, and sometimes radishes or avocado. I ate that without any dressing. Dinner was a meat (two baked chicken legs or thighs with the crispy skin, a steak, bratwurst, etc.) and some veggies like brussels sprouts or asparagus. Snack options would be string cheese, walnuts or garlic almonds, avocado, peanut butter on celery, raw veggies, or some type of meat/sausage. I'd also have about three cups of cappuccino a day. I really need to make an effort to go back to eating that way. I was thin and never felt starved.

I eat whatever I want, whenever I want, as long as it doesn't have sugar or flour. I'm eating a good bit of paté now, realizing I need to eat organ meats. It's also very fatty, which means I can just shove a spoonful of it in my mouth when I feel a little cognitively depleted and/or hungry. It's the closest I come to a pill I can take as a lunch substitute. I also started taking this stuff -- Great Lakes Gelatin, Collagen Hydrolysate . The green one is the one that melts in hot water.
*I learned something from Denise Minger -- my show with her and her book: Some people have APOE4, the hoarder allele, and those people probably can't eat fatty foods like I do, and need more protein and less fat. These are people who merely look at a cracker and put on a pound.

Well, there is something to be said about exercise.
Some of the most insanely fit people I've met eat loads of carbs -- donuts, pizza, pasta, etc.
How are they fit and trim? Because they stay physically active.

My co worker struggles mercilessly with her weight and no matter how much she excersises, it's not budging. I think she would be perfect for low carb, but she is soooo stubborn!!! She told me you "need some sugar in your diet" for what???? She is always hungry and then just eats more rice!!! Urg. I wish she would listen. Her lifetime struggle would be over in a matter of months.
Stormyweather at May 8, 2014 8:38 PM
You're right about the sugar, protein, etc.
I lost a ton of weight after my second child...almost down to what I am now, 8 years after my forth.
Something changed though. About a year after my fourth, I figured it was time to get my body back. Easy...it came off before and I LOVE meat and fat and dark greens. After three weeks, nothing. Not one pound. I wasn't cheating because this type of eating is a breeze for me.
I tried it a few more times over the next ten months with the same result...NO LOSS.
Now I eat about 60% animal protein and 40% carbs, mostly good ones but sometimes bad ;) I do limit my amounts to a palm sized portions three times a day and no snacking.
It works for me...

Why do you need to eat organ meats?
