Flower-Thieving Scumbag
Monday evening, I was just coming back from walking my dogmorsel when I was amazed by when I saw from down my street.
African-American woman -- thin, pretty, maybe about 30 -- toddler daughter strapped into car seat in the back of her car, stops on wrong side of the street (against traffic), runs across street, picks (in other words, STEALS) my flowers.
No lady, because the flowers are not padlocked down, it doesn't mean you get to take them.
And what a lovely example to set for the kid in the car, who heard me yelling, "Thief! You stole my flowers!" as the woman ran to her car, jumped in and drove off.
Note that the car -- a Volkswagon Sports Coupe, $32,495 and up -- looks brand new.
A pity the woman didn't use birth control.
Oh, and the best was, the flowers she took really aren't flowers but bougainvillea, which lives all of 12 seconds after it's picked.

I once lived next door to a black family, in a middle class neighborhood. They had a late model BMW with a sun roof. I sometimes saw them throw trash out their sun roof onto my yard. They wonder why white people are willing to pay a premium to live away from them.

I find that black people are the most likely to be polite when I (lie and) tell them I have a baby sleeping so they won't make noise right outside our homes. And by "make noise," I mean open their car doors and blast their music three feet from my neighbor's window and about 12 feet from mine. (It's hot out, too -- we have our windows open now.) People of all colors do this. It's an asshole thing not a color thing.

Yeah, it's an asshole thing. They come in every color. The whole "Don't mess with Texas" anti-littering campaign was created because young white men had no qualms about throwing their garbage out of their pickups 25 years ago. (You know, because as long as YOUR truck is clean, it's good...)
We were eating at a restaurant that has a fountain in the courtyard the other day, and I saw a little boy (under 3) pick a water lily. To their credit, the parents were horrified.
And don't bouganvillea have prickles? I can never remember, but I can't keep them alive, anyway.

I saw white couple In a BMW trash my parents front yard with their Taco Bell garbage.
I saw Hispanic teens pee in my parents yard.
I saw an Asian couple not pick up their dog poo several times in my parents yard.
I never saw any black people do anything because black people are pretty much non-existent in Orange County.

That's not a coupe. A coupe would only have two doors. Although I am assuming that the two doors seen in the picture are not the only two doors on the car.

I used to live across from an elementary school in Oakland CA. Parents would park all over the street to pick up their kids, often ignoring the generous curbside space. It got so sometimes you couldn't get through all the double-parked cars. I watched one parent looking for a place to park, and -horrors!- there was only one car next to the curb. The driver proceeded to pull up alongside that one car and double-park.
My friends love to visit me where I am now... we're mainly white and well educated. It's CLEAN. Some towns just have more class than others.

We used to live on a rail trail in Maryland. People thought nothing of also picking our flowers, having a picnic in our yard, letting their dogs run throughout our yard or parking on our front lawn or in the driveway - effectively blocking us in.
TR at July 15, 2014 12:57 PM
Steve: Horribly, car marketers - all German, I think - are trying to sell four-door cars as "coupes" these days - including Volkwagen with that CC that they insist stands for "comfort coupe".
On the other topic, I quote "because young white men had no qualms about throwing their garbage out of their pickups 25 years ago"
This is ironic, in a way, because anyone who drives a pickup with no canopy learns rapidly that bystanders sometimes consider an open pickup bed to be their personal trash bin, too.

Yet another example of how life in SoCal is so much better than other places?
You're paying a premium to have your fence peed on, flowers stolen, parking blocked, ears offended by the stereos and yelling of nearby bar patrons...
It's a SoCal thing, I guess.
Radwaste at July 15, 2014 2:36 PM
My previous house had a lovely (unfenced) backyard where I planted lots of colorful flowers. When I was sitting on the patio one afternoon, a teenage twerp and his equally twerpy girlfriend walked by. He yanked one of my Japanese irises out of the ground, roots and all, to give to her. I stood up and simply told him I would have cut some flowers for him if he has simply asked. Of course, I got a "duh" look and the requisite "whatever, bitch" response.
Kima at July 15, 2014 2:36 PM
> It's a SoCal thing, I guess
Yes... As are the starlets, the misty ocean breezes, the wafting mountain sagebrush, and the 350 cloudless days each year. It's a little cooler by the beach, so I like to wear a good wool, silk or camelhair sports coat.
A day spent enjoying California is like sexual intercourse. Only it's better, because you don't have to talk afterwards. If you don't want.
Don't be bitter, Raddy.

I think they're trying to avoid the dreaded "sedan" word.
It's a bit deceptive, like calling a GT convertible a "roadster."

The neighborhood we lived in before here was a bubble project that went bust, it was supposed to be a resort community. The lots are bigger than usual, and half remain unsold 20 years later (it was poorly conceived...if you're going to buy 5,000 sq. ft. of land in Japan, you're not going to just use it on the weekends!)
We voted to use community money to buy loads of mixed flower seeds that were sown all over the empty lots, the place looked great! Unfortunately the neighborhood is up the side of a mountain and can be seen from the surrounding neighborhoods and the local shopping center. People started to show up and fill the trunks of their cars with flowers. Sigh. Many people in Japan seem to have a concept of 'anything in the wild is up for grabs' and it took signs all over the place saying that we planted the damned things to make them stop. Once it was clear that the flowers were 'owned' and didn't just sprout there they stopped, which is to their credit I guess. I'd think they'd get a clue from the same flowers blooming on every empty lot...
Kima, that's awful!

Classy.

I used to put flower pots - just some geraniums - out on our shared front porch at my apartment.
But, I stopped after getting tired of my neighbors using them as ashtrays.
Almost wish they would have stolen them instead.

Anything growing over the fence is public property, as this rhubarb picking lady argues convincingly:

Not. Spent time in San Diego, I get it.
I'm seeing more negatives than positives lately, so thanks!

Well, if the woman had taken cuttings instead of plucking flowers, she might have been able to grow her own. But the flowers themselves will be wilted by the time she gets home.

The correct way to "take cuttings" is to ask permission. The plants, including morning glories I'm training over my fence, make my street prettier. Imagine if everyone behaved like this woman -- just came over and yanked off any plant within reach.

Oh, I understand perfectly that the woman was stealing from you. I was just pointing out that taking cuttings would have given her plants of her own to enjoy, instead of getting wilted flowers by the time she reaches her home. But even taking cuttings without permission is still stealing.
And while asking permission is a good way to take cuttings, the best way is to ask the owner to take cuttings for you. It allows the owner to decide which areas she wants those cuttings taken from.

Wow I remember doing that when I was 6 yrs old and getting a severe spanking for it. The car she is driving has no bearing on her status or if she can or can't afford to buy flowers, the car could be borrowed, her significant other could be a car salesman or drug dealer, the simple fact remains somewhere along the way..this individual should have been spanked like I was for taking something without asking.

I love this idea of punishment: She comes over and I give her some whacks with my fly swatter for rude, thieving behavior! Very satisfying.
Even better if somebody shoots video of it an puts it on YouTube. As I note in "Good Manners For Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck" -- the power of positive shaming!
