As Robin Williams Week winds down, the first retrospective I read remains the best.
No matter how old Williams was, the first time you encountered him was always a treat, thanks to his ability to take command of whatever he was doing — a Happy Days episode, a talk show, an animated Arabian Nights — and spit out jokes so fast that you could swear he was making the whole thing up as he went along.
Of course, he wasn’t, and that’s the thing that eventually hurt Williams’s reputation. His act was based in part on the illusion of being spontaneous, of busting into a dignified setting and reducing it to a shambles with his ad-libbing. (This is why he was such a perfect talk show guest. Talk shows used to have, and to some extent still have, a patina of dignity. The hosts wear suits and are respectable men. Williams was the guy you had on when you wanted to see that dignity challenged just a little bit.) It wasn’t really ad-libbing, or most of it wasn’t anyway, and once you saw him more often, you began to realize how much he repeated himself; because he over-exposed himself on television and in other media, he wasn’t able to maintain the illusion that he was improvising, which other, equally scripted comedians manage to do. But it sure was great the first couple of times.
But this Fox News story of a Santa Barbara professor strong-arming an anti-abortion poster away from a student totally cheesed me off.
I've read dozens of stories on that had no idea the professor was black until now.
"“It would be tragic if Dr. Miller-Young were sentenced to jail time or mandatory anger management classes based on the press’ portrayal of her as an Angry Black Woman.”"
Funny how they want to play the 'bad' race card if it will work in her favor.
Crid: What I hear is that the Westboro "Baptists" make a living out of suing people for assault, aided and abetted by judges that won't let juries learn about jury nullification.
You (generically, not Amy Alkon specifically, thought I wouldn't doubt it) can be a real bitch sometimes, and you oughta work on that.

Disclaimer: I'm pro-choice and avoid TV news (especially Fox) like the plague.

And then it got weirder.

…I think that's accurate. Consider the two earliest appearances I can recall, seen here and here: They've got a lot in common.
Once you'd spotted the the pattern, he was, essentially, just another celebrity.

It's amazing the shades of identity and character that can be packed into a candid photograph.
You can dress 'em up like schoolboys in Sunday blazers if you want, but nobody's kidding anybody.

I don't understand why these people haven't been beaten into the soil by an angry passerby yet.
