Beauty Is Thrift
I like to find the truly fabulous product or appliance for the job -- and then find the one that's far cheaper and just as good or close to it.
Need a flat iron for your hair? You can get a great one for $175, according to beauty sites, or, according to me, for $39.99: The latter is the Remington S8510DS Flat Iron, Frizz Therapy, 1 Inch. Takes five to 10 minutes to do your whole head. Actually, more like five minutes.
And there's $22 Make Up For Ever waterproof cream eyeshadow that will pretty much stay on through a national disaster (including a wet one) -- and there's what's actually a little better, Maybelline Color Tattoo
, for about $6.
And then there's MAC gel eyeliner for $16 at MAC. And there's L'Oreal gel eyeliner for $8.99.
Oh, and don't forget to throw a copy of my book, "Good Manners for Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck," into your cart, so you can be beautiful while stopping the rude.
Next week, for all you boys, the beauty of frugality in power tools. Um, maybe. If I become a different person by next week.

Essense Midnight in Paris Eyeliner is made in Germany, and only $3.99. It's as good as the MAC one.
Want the best most pigmented blushes? Made here in LA.
La Femme $2.50 per blush. The packaging is ugly but the blushes are amazing. Plenty of reviews and swatches online.
Ben Nye Face powder $8 for a giant sized tub. It's what the pros use, and comes in a lot of colors.
My favorite Matte lipsticks right now? $1.50 jordana matte ones (only the matte! The rest are not good). Made here in LA.

Loving these suggestions. I'm outta touch with a lot of the fads, so this may not be revolutionary for anyone else, but I went to the salon with my kids and the stylist did my youngest's hair with this:
Bed Head Deep Waver
She tried to sell it to me for $60 when I was having a cow over the hair results. I never was able to wield a curling iron correctly, I can maneuver this big thing though. $20 shipped Amazon Prime, use Amy's linkage.
AMY NOTE: Thanks, goose...and Amy's linkage has been edited in! Looks cool! Did it have a crimping effect?

hi...i did put your book in my shopping cart, and i've finished it, and i loved it.
i have motion sickness just like you. i've found the cure: ginger. you can buy capsules in a health food store. or...the cheaper way...i buy the ginger in bulk also at a health food grocery store (ground ginger like one uses for baking) and i buy capsules in bulk, and i put the ginger into the capsules. i fill them up really full.
before i fly i take a number of capsules with food. and i'll take my bottle along in case i need more.
this really really helps. i can now even read on a plane.
also...i used to sit in the front of the plane, but then i was told that the area even with the wings is more stable.

I'm pretty sure Amy Dacyczyn could beat that, given all the general hints on how to be creative and save in "The Complete Tightwad Gazette."
However, I suspect most would draw the line at buying unsealed makeup containers at yard sales - they may well contain germs. But one doesn't always have to do that to save big-time.

Yes, that thing works - it's better than a crimper, in my opinion. It looks like they've been softly curled with an iron to me. Love it. That thing is hot on all sides, though. There's a learning curve. Thanks for adding the link in!
